18th Birthday Bash Ibiza style?

I've been booked to do an 18th Birthday Party on NYE. The girl has asked for an "Ibiza style" disco. Obviously I will be sending a playlist sheet out in the booking pack but any suggestions from you guys, titles and/or artists and any recommended CD's as there are hundreds of Ibiza party albums out there!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not very confident at mixing why not use a pc or laptop with something like virtual Dj or traktor Dj what can beatmix the tracks across and has lots of effects to play with.

As for ibiza style music, Here is some of my floorfiller favourites:

Anything and everything by Chicane, also, if you can't mix, grab the Northern Exposure mix CDs and near anything in the Global Underground series, and anything by or associated with Sasha and Digweed.

Mainstream dance...woop! I agree, get out your Hed Kandi, Cream and Ministry of Sound CDs!

I've got a gig very similar, at the hotel I'm resident at...but being paid by the client. I can use all the lighting install (which is all pointing down...so you get a very good club effect if all the other lights are off) Its 8pm - 3am - can't wait (in Jan)

I am familiar with the "scene" as I have 3 step-daughters that are into the Ibiza scene. I was just after a few pointers as what tracks to play (I have a few Anthem CD's off my step-daughters). As for mixing - I have 3 months to work on it and also I am friends with an ex DJ that did a lot of mixing in clubs and he's offered to teach me the basics.

Yes & give advice.

The good advice is don't bite off more than you can chew.

As your mixing skills aren't currently up to it & you're having to ask for advice on what to play, I'd say that's exactly what you've done

A "few" CDs? How many is a few? & how long's the party?

Well, I've had a look at the virtual dj software and I reckon that'll be a great help. I have around 8 triple cd's (and a couple of 4 cd packs) to be going on with (and more on the way). The gig is around 4 hours - as for "pulling it off" - I'm always up for a new and exciting challenge and am looking forward to it.

I guess you'll all find out how I did in the new year as obviously I'll be posting a run down of the night (good or bad).

Anyway - going back to my mixing practice now...

Also jsut a quick note about others have said regarding mixing... If you can't mix now i really don't think you should do the gig but you've obviously decided that you will so good luck to you... I suppose it's not too bad if it's just an Ibiza theme and most of the night will be general party stuff BUT if the night is none stop Ibiza music and mixing from start to finish there's no hope... It takes years of practice and knowledge of the music to be able to do something like that...

But as a note from a VDJ user... Their auto beat matching is good and does just that or close to it anyway.... BUT it doesn't take into account the phases or key or anything like that and doesn't always get the mix sounding right...

So i really would advise against it (and any other software) if you were thinking that it would be an easy way to be able to do none stop mixing all night Ibiza style.

If you do choose Virtual DJ I would get practising "Looping" and cross cutting/fading hi mids lows etc... and let Virtual DJ do the beat matching. Very pro effects can be achieved quickly but i agree the most important thing is to know the tracks you want to play inside out.
With this kind of dance music you will notice (if you havent already) there is normally a few bars of plain beat at the start and end of each track, handily placed for looping and staggerd hi mid low cutting.

Make sure the tracks you intend on mixing are full 12" versions and not premixed material of MOS cd's etc as there are no mixing points on the later. And i fully agree with jamesh, mixing properly (beat not phase) takes years and is a skill on its own.

I've been to San Antonio twice and needed a holiday to get over the holiday.

My step-daughter went to Ibiza 2 weeks ago. She said she had about 4 hours sleep in the whole week. When she came back she looked half dead! I don't think it was just the alcohol if you know what I mean. I didn't ask as I really didn't want to know!

Personally if i went to ibiza now i would spend more time in A&E on the stomach pump machine than anything else lol.

Or i would come back looking pretty dead and skint lol

if they want a real ibiza style. i would use a foam machine :D and get a lazer and a cuple of strobes + uv . and play dance music like cream classic. maybe buy a job lot of flashing dumys and sell them to the girls

Just got back from Ibiza myself, spent a lot of time exploring the island which is beautiful, but also did a night in Pacha and Es Paradis. It is a completely different scene to the type of evening I would say most of us put on.
Mixing (beating matching) and making it sound like one continuous track is the key.
I have to say the atmosphere in these clubs is amazing even though most people in them are rather wide eyed!!!
And the comments about glow sticks and dummies may apply to some of the San Antnio clubs, but the top names places in Ibiza town are full of people of all ages and very stylish
