Calling all Cortex users...

The following question came up in another thread & was not answered, so I thought I'd ask it here.

Does the Cortex provide enough power to be able to use USB powered hard drives?

...or do you have to use mains powered ones?

I use 2 powered hard drives one main one back up i know people use usb memory sticks with them but usb powered don't know mate ........

I would have thought using a usb powered keyboard and usb powered hard drive maybe inviting trouble though??? but im sure you are fuly aware of my technical ability. lol

Should add that on the other thread I said I use 2 USB powered HDDs on my d2 - I also use a USB keyboard on port 3.

Just for completeness as you know I like things to be so. ;)

Hi Rob, heres the answer from the Cortex Handbook-- which wont help at the moment--Spin should know anyway--

Although the Cortex is able to provide power to the vast majority of USB powered devices--USB hubs should be powered

The HDC 1000 is designed to interface with all driverless USB devices--

then goes on to say it SHOULD be compatible.

You may find Spin or someone else is doing this--otherwise maybe speak to your local DJ shop for help?

CLEARLY YOU NEED TO USE A MAKE THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS USED WITHOUT PROBLEM.

If you use powered HDD then anything will work of course, as long as you dont use the wrong power supply:D

I'm certainly planning to use a USB keyboard to make things easier (especially seeing how easy it is when I watched Darren using one last week).

I wonder if anyone uses the Cortex WITHOUT a keyboard?

Maybe just the ones who are into lots of button pressing & sore fingers!

I guess that means that if you just use a USB keyboard in one of the on board USB sockets & a USB powered hard drive in the other, you should be ok (as you're not using a hub)...although if you ARE using a hub to plug in a keyboard as well as multiple hard drives, then in that situation the hub should be powered.

I think that when you have 20000 songs plus for chips power or whatever works the thing to search through its best to give it a helping hand where possible.

Good point Dave makes about having a lot of stuff on the HDD-- might cause
problems on a search?

I use a small memory stick for testing but thats got a small number of tunes to search.

Mini Keyboard? You cant hack it without one--have you tried twiddling around trying to find tracks--:eek: :eek: :eek:

Better to wear out the £20 keyboard than the Cortex buttons.

I also carry a spare keyboard--big usb one-- you never know:eek:

I would think Rob that if your covering mainly MOR Mainstream Weddings like myself all you need do is put in Song titles or artist---

There is a facility where you press Control and I for information if you have chosen a track name with several versions and not checked the artist.

The other night I finished with Hi Ho Silver Lining and assumed all the copies I have are duplications of the original studio recording of Jeff Beck.

Got something else:eek: ---- which really rocked the place:D :D :D

Still havent checked if it was a live version or someone else:eek:

The string locates anything--Artist-title etc.

Thats all I ever use

If you typed in ZING you would probably get your track.

Same with PUPPET

He obviously mis-typed it... it's for finding stuff like 'Walking on the Moon', 'Roxanne', 'Fields of Gold' etc.
