My pet hates are when your struggling to get your equipment out of a venue and the guests stand talking in door ways and watch you trying to hold open heavy fire doors while getting your gear through. but they never hold the doors open for you, GGrrrrrrrrr

Saw your comments on another post. I have to admit that's nearly as bad :(

Having to carry all your equipment in and out of a venue thats one of them things that you cannot avoid though in most cases Its part of been a mobile dj . So I dont moan about it i just get on with it. My roadie moans about it all the time but i tell him to shurrup moaning and get on with it.

My roadie thinks i have upper body strength because i carry the RCF ART 705 subs down the stairs!! He even thinks the mackies are heavy.

:D The Puff :D I always call him that when he moans about lifting them.

I really hate people who get nasty 'cos you won't play 'one more' song.

( Note: For other DJ's information, CD's are those funny silver things they used to put music on years ago. Your laptop can be very expensive to use as a crowd control measure)

Thought I'd share this one with you ....

I have just unloaded after doing a Wedding Fayre (after 4 hours kip last night), and hit myself quite hard on the head with the edge of my trolley :eek: :bang: :daft:

So the question is, what aspect(s) of DJ-ing do you dislike ?

Weddings--they keep you waiting 2 hours outside the Marquee--last Saturday-- then say can you set up your stuff and move it in quickly---yes if its not expletive well raining:eek:

Then when you rush it all in you get the best man saying---no pressure here Crazy--but when can you start:mad:

You really feel like saying--dont you think im trying to get started as soon as I can--but you cant cos hes just given you that big brown envelope:D

Now that's both worrying, and not surprising.

1) Worrying- Me agreeing with someone on here, especially Steve.

2) Not Surprising- I know DJ's who have given up the game because of having to play that type of stuff. I nearly used a disparaging term about the music, but realised that is what we all dislike. It is not good policy to call music rubbish, just because you dislike it. ( Even if it is total bilge:D )

Hmmm... moving heavy gear around, not being able to get to the bar/toilet when it's too busy, rude/aggressive/annoying punters, when no-one wants to dance, the immense stress when things don't go to plan, smoky rooms (pre-ban), 3AM finishes (when applicable), when ill/head aches...

...but apart from that - I love it!!

hmm.. im used to lugging heavy gear around and stupidly late pack ups from all the get outs we do for various shows.. (think 2 x articulated lorries instead of 1x small van)

But the main thing that annoys me is when we are packing down.. they sit around watching.. checking their watches..
it isn't even like we take a long time!

If there are two artics, then there will be more staff! And my van is not small, and there's only me. :p

i dont like when people are not having a good time. i feel that my job for the evening or function/event is to try to make people enjoy themselves and have a bit of fun. if no one is dancing i must be doing somthing wrong, which it could be but i hope not or people are just not in the mood.

and then comes the driving. i love driving but with all my gear in my small car and trying to go up a large hill....... well think about it. :lol: :(

We were out within and hour and a half though :p

Although being fair.. that was mainly down to having a lot of fun with the downward ramp going into the trucks.. (think big flight cases on wheels :p)

Having to work every weekend when my friends are out socialising. Having to miss out on a lot of key family events because I have to work on a weekend. It's those things that I dislike the most.

Theres nothing i really hate about the job. If i did then i wouldnt do it and just stick to my normal day job. Years of being a musician before i was a dj have got me used to strange working hours and sometimes unpolite people standing in your way while packing up etc.

well my two pet hates are very close to being number 1,

The first one is when you get to the venue and the only entrance to the function room is up a fire escape and the steps are made out of metal and to make matters worse it is raining.

The second one is venues like social clubs or lower market hotels when they are rushing you to get out as they want to go home and are moaning with the amount of gear you have to take out, I usually say if your so bothered grab a box lol

Well, in the case of modern R&B, it's total Blige ;)

I can see the positive in most music so it doesn't worry me. There are a couple of songs I intentionally don't have, though - 'Laffy Taffy' and 'Ay Bay Bay', for example.

What IS it about people hanging around doorways and exit stairwells at the end of the night? And why, when the DJ says "I'll be coming through here with lots of heavy stuff shortly", do they still act annoyed/surprised when you bump them whilst coming through with a sub or an amp stack?

I think the thing that I hate THE most, though, is the gimp that offers to help as you're leaving the room with the last load... yeah, hi-ilarious, mate.

Well, that, and the idiot who loudly proclaims that either the last song was the only decent song played all night, or that nothing decent was played all night, but always after everything's unplugged so you can't use the mic to point out that they had been free to make requests all night so they only have themselves to blame, oh and by the way, everyone else was dancing so you're insulting their tastes as much if not more than my DJing.

Doing functions for Billy Nomates , like wedding yesterday mostly old people saying can you turn it down, the few young people saying can't you play something more up-to date.
Wasn't too bad but I much prefer it when there is at least 100 rather than about 40.

My annoying things...

1)People asking for rubbish requests, and then not dancing to them.
2)Groups of drunk blokes falling into your gear
3)People coming behind my set-up, and watching what Im doing, then going through my CD's pulling them all out saying "play that next, play that next, play that next". GO AWAY!! I now barracade myself in, so no one can get to me!

The disadvantage of being digital is putting up with the geeks who profess to "know a thing or two about computers" getting off on pointing at various bits of kit and asking inane questions :o Especially on the big rig where I've got three laptops plus the d2 all up and running and doing different stuff :rolleyes:

Just thought of probably the most annoying for me - turning up at a venue, either on time or early and then having to wait around as the wedding has over run. and then having to rush to set up with people interuppting every 10 mins saying "Are you nearly ready yet?"

Yes i know the feeling lol. Sometimes no matter what you play, nothing will get them up. I remember having to do a disco years ago just after the twin towers had been hit and all that trouble was kicking off in America.....God the atmosphere was tense that night, the last thing people wanted to do was dance :eek: Apart from that it was a poor turn out as well, not surprising.

One of my best was few weeks ago when this girl came up and asked "If I had any Dolly Parton".Of course I did and duly obliged with 9to5.
10 minutes later she returns to ask if "I had any Dolly?" I said yes and that I'd already played one.Every 5 minutes or so she came back asking for more so I decided to play Islands in the Stream and that,hopefully was that.

Alas no,every 10 minutes she returned asking guess what.......Did I have any Dolly at this point I had to get forceful and say no no no.

Next thing this guy comes up and asks I I have any Jamiroquai-to which I duly obliged.Then HE comes back again asking for more.
Guess what........He was her Husband!!!!

My pet hates about DJing are as follows:
1. People automatically thinking that 'Mobile DJ' means cheese meisters as they have this image in their head that we are all 'Smashy & Nicey'.
2. When doing club nights, people who don't read the posters etc and ask for something like Rhianna when the night is Indie & Alternative.
3. People at parties who come up to you when the dancefloor is full and ask if you can play something else as they think what you are playing is rubbish (yet everyone else seems to be enjoying it).
4. Jobsworths at hotels who think that they know what they are doing...but they don't.
5. Ignorant, abusive drunk people who expect you to have every record ever made.
6. People putting drinks on my bass bins and when I move them they look at me as if I am in the wrong.
7. People leaning over me with drinks in their hands or thinking that the uprights on the goalposts are sturdy enough for them to lean on.
8. People who ask "what are you playing next?" every 2 minutes or "Can I look at your CDs?"
9. People getting in the way when you are trying to get all of the gear out the door that they just happen to be standing in the way of.
10. People who suddenly decide at the end of the night to have a drunken singalong, more often than not it's something like "You'll never walk alone".

Phew! Why do I do this job?

I had something like that a few years ago. I was doing a Rock / Indie / Alternative night & these idiots came in & wanted to know why the football wasn't on. I wouldn't mind so much had they not just come in through a door with a poster on it with Rock / Indie / Alternative Night Tonight 8 - 12 on it in big letters at eye level & walked around a 4 ft high A-board with the same message. I would've thought the loud music & flashing lights might have given the game away.

4) Venue people who want me to hurry up so they can lock up.

6) Being tired and not in the mood but know I've got to do my best as I never lets the clients down!

Totally agree! I just plain don't play it and make it totally clear at the point of booking!

apart from the bad language involved I think R n B needs to stay with the kiddies (sorry teenagers) and theres no place for it at any of my
gigs

and I really don't like anyone messin with my kit!

Don't want to fuel the fire here Steve, but according to Wikipedia, the term 'R&B' applies to both 'genres' - and is in fact more often used to label the modern music that you hate so much.. :sofa:

One begot the other anyway. The 'n' was used a lot for the former whereas & seems to get used more for the latter. Does this make sense?
I suppose, it doesn't really worry me, I was just curious to see which terms seemed to be accepted 'out there'.

You have to wonder why they used the same name for a different style of music, when it was quite obviously already in use.

Oh, and you never hear the full term 'rhythm & blues' used for the hip-hop/pop style of music, so there's another way you can distinguish them! :)
