Iv just had a look on the website maby this could be an idea.

Has anybody made, used or heard any of the speakers from

http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=home ???????

would be an idea to make my own boxes instead of paying £££££ for name brands.

Anyway

Do you expect the sound to be as good though? There is a reason why some speakers cost more than others, and part of it is that cabinets are designed to produce the best sound relative to the parts installed in them.

i understand that. on the site they use PD, RFC and Eminence speakers. I take it that, thats a good thing then???

i mean i dont mind paying for a named brand but why not give it a go ?

well i woud need a sub by the end of october at the latest as i would need it for the germany gig, but i still dont know what design to use for DJ use and Sound Reinforcement (pa use). Was looking at the 186 horn with either using the RCF L18 P300 speaker or the PD 186

Rog Mogale who runs speakerplans is a very talented cabinet designer and his work is testiment to this fact! go to notting hill carnaval next year and you'll find a lot of the speakers are of his design!

Don't think I'm puttin your Dad down but you need to be quiet advanced in cabinet building to make some of these speakers, the sizes and angles on horn loaded cabs have to be spot on or the speaker won't work properly
and you can't just chuck any drive unit into them either it has to be the right unit for the cab.
Why not start with a ported reflex cab (Maybe a 1 x 18") which are quiet easy to build and with the right design & driver will provide loads of bass and you won't need a truck & fork lift to move them about!

Speakerplans website is owned / run by Roger, who is also the owner of Void Acoustics. The plans available on the site were designed by him (in his spare time before Void really kicked off), and are all good quality designs. In particular, the X1 is a great sub unit for Disco use, if you build it correctly and use the recommended driver.

Having said that roger is the designer, the speakers do look a lot like the void stuff. i take it there going to be some loud speakers

Speakerplans is a good souce for all audio information. The people on the forum are just like the ones here, friendly and helpful.

It's very satisfying building your own speakers, and the possitive comments from people who see and hear them.

I'm sure it is, but you are potentially mixing business with pleasure. What I mean by that is, if you start the project, and the results are less satisfying than you expected - you may be tempted to persevere with it anyway, and sacrifice sound quality.

This is some really good advice from colint i am a pro cabinet maker and some of the horn designs are very technical do as he suggests and start with a simple ported reflex. Void are just up the road from me in Poole and have a link company called pro audio parts or spares im not quite sure but they sell all the drivers for the cab designs also a cheaper range called P Audio

Beerfunk, for me, if it doesn't turn out as I expected, it's a learning curve. Learn from my mistakes and make sure I don't repeat them.

I am not a cabinet designer, and so rely on other peoples designs. I research the designs, to find out what other people think of them before I start building them. As for woodwork skills, you will know soon enough if you have bitten off more than you can chew.:)

David you a brave man! not many people would undertake building a folded horn!

Without being to critical, in the picture (if this is what your building) I notice that the internal panels don't have the angles required, these will definatly (opps) come apart under any sort of load and your right about the learning curve! if you don't try you wont know!!!!!:)

Now thats top quality work! really like the mid cab's, I've seen pro builders that can't turn out cabs like that, it's a good pastime to have and really puts a sime on your face when it all come together, I used to do this for a living but not much call for it now with all the plastic cabs about but you can't beat timber cabs!
I just build for a hobby now!

The paint I use is made by a company called Aldroft Adhesives. It is water based, easy to use and dries quickly. A 5kg tub is about £30 including delivery. You can apply it with a textures roller.

They can also make the paint any colour you want. Here is a number for them. 01204 668 282

Thats the same paint I use I but get it from Blue aran in southampton 2.5 ltr (5k) tub for £15 + postage

what are the horns your using in the 1 x 12" cabs they look nice!

I've never really done the photo thing although I've built just about everything from speakers to rack sleeves (and of course deck stands) maybe I should start? I'll post photo's of my new system when it's finished to start it off!

Also my workshop will be in use for building kit for other Dj's in the new year a sort of custom build center for Mobile Dj's instead of the install stuff it was set up for so watch this space!

So far I've done 1 deckstand with 2 coats, 2 1 x 18" sub cabs with 3 coats and the garden gate with 1 coat (and very funky it looks too in turbosound blue) and I still have half of the tub left (the little lady's had to talk me out of doing the bathroom in it as well!)

This stuff is truly easy to use I put it on with a radiator roller, it drys in about 5 mins and can be recoated in about 15 mins & the finish is unbeleivable I never got a finish like this with Trimite which has to be sprayed and all the other nonsence that goes with it.

And the real good thing is it's water based so everything cleans under a tap no thiners

Unless your doing a lot of cabs I'd get the smaller tub because this stuff really goes a long way

I got told about it when I was at turbosound recently it's what they use on their cabs, I've done all my stuff in turbo blue cos I can't see why everything on a mobile disco has to be black & it all looks well funky & bright now!

ohh yeah. you said it was water based so i guess it would go a long way. black speakers are ok but if you look at other makes like nexo, turbosound and void for example that dont use black. instead they use blue, red and white for some designs. i think more speaker companys should be using differrent colours now unless the speakers have to be hidden???

Bit hard to hid a large pa system? but I know where your coming from, just seems odd to me we all spend so much money on our kit and then paint it all black so no one can see it
So I've decided this years mission is to brighten everyone up a bit! everyone's kit should be looking well funky by christmas or slapped legs all round!:p

Almost any 18" driver will fit! how it performs is another thing?
This man spent a lot of time designing the 1850 horn so if he say use a PD1850 (hence the name) then thats what you should use! I gotta be honist I don't really know (or use) PD drivers due to their weight & cost (the 1850 is about £350.00)
but if this is the route your going to take then follow the man to the letter and you won't go wrong,

I've heard 4 of these cabs driven of a crown mvz5000 and it was almost painful, but the weight is always going to be a problem unless you have lots of mates to help you! and don't forget you need at least 1000 watts into each cab to power them properly!

i can get the pd 1850 driver (800 wattsrms, 8ohm) for £279.91.

moving them about is not a problem because i know a few guys who would love to help out because of the size and power of the speakers (bass lovers). plus i will have a van by the time i will have these speakers but i still havent got a reply from rog about a licence aggrement :(

Go for the V18 1000 over the PD1850, it's proven to be a better sounding driver, and is a variation of the drivers used in my Void Stasys 8 cabinets.

Do you really need 8 bins though? How big are the events you are doing? To give you an example, my main system (with just 2 pairs of twin 18in bins) will do 1000 people, not massively loud, but with enough kick to create an atmosphere. With all new rules coming into play in April next year, do you really need such a big system?

ohh ok. i was thinking about the whole db and not about the watts. plus in the end i would like to be a live sound engineer with all my own equipment, just like all the pro's but work my way up.

there a few local band who have made it quite big round here and usually draw a very big crowd so i would like to get the chance to do the sound for them as well sa dj'ing as i love that aswell.

would like to do a mini download aswell. maby just a few 1000 people turning up. somthing like that i am aiming for, being realistic but this is over a few years yet. im not going to make them straight away. build 2 subs and 2 tops for pa work and maby use them for large disco's if need be.

The only problem with the 1850 design, is that using 1 per side, or even two won't reproduce the lower frequencies of a bass guitar. You really need 4 in a stack to start moving some air. Have a look at the Punisher design (there is a sub forum for the Punisher / Xtro on Speakerplans), might be a better option for you.

does anybody know where i can get some spec's for the Punisher / Xtro speakers? or build designs???

EDIT - no need to worry everyone. found them but it took a while.

these speaker do look much better on paper and also as a finished design. i might go for these now even though the Punisher uses a 12" (800 watts) woofer and if 4 or more are uses it can create over 140db at 1 meter. thats impressive.

this is a setup of 4 punisher bass bins and 2 X-tro tops

this is a 5400 watts rms setup. the laptop shows a figure which is measured at 6 meters. when up at1 meter it showed over 140db.

these look so good. the plans are easy to follow for the bass bins but the tops are much harder. worth a shot.

I must admit I really fancy the Punisher / Xtro thing myself, I saw these about 6 months ago and down loaded the drawings! the idea of a horn loaded 12" cab is very appealing and the xtro looks facinating! (& very loud)

One day I might just get round to it! :D

Tom

i really want to build these so badly but its storing them after building them i have a problem with. but then again i wont really be needing them for about a year but i just want to have them now so if i do get asked to do a really big disco then i can say "yeah, go on" and earn top ££££ for it

the punisher look really easy from the plan i have here because it give the size of wood to cut out and angle off the egdes and all that but the X-tro's it looks much harder. where did you get your plans from (just out of intrest)

cheers colin but these are the same spec sheets i have here aswell. the punisher gives a cut out sheet guide but with the xtro its just loads of numbers with not much to go by.

the subs i could probelly do myself but the xtro's look more hard to build.

The thing is a cutting list with the punishers is just a bonus, you need to work out from the drawings what the sizes are (hence the numbers)

but be aware I've looked at these drawing loads of times and these are not going to be an easy cab to build unless you have the right tools to do it with i,e bench/table saw, router plus all the other stuff you'd normally need and you going to need plenty of space too!
Good luck!

Just a thought have you concidered a local cabinet builder?

Thats why you need a good table saw (& a sharp plane)
