Hi all!
Im keen to get my head around this DMX business so I have bought a Stairville DMX Master 1 (I believed it comes in a few other guises as well).
I plan to use this with my two Skytec Robo Scans first and then when im up and running add my mojo spinmasters, Led par cans and smoke machine.
I was feeling confidant having read DMX Wills guide and the manual for the controller and lights!!!
But nothing is happening :(
Everything is powerd up. DMX out goes to scanner 1 which has just dip switch 1 on. Then onto second scanner which has dip switch 7 on. Based on each light having 6 channels, have i got this right?
Im not sure if this is a controller, dipswitch or a opperator problem (dipstick)
please help folks!

Depends how many channels each light uses.
If light one uses say 12 , then that setting is wrong
sorry see it has 6 mis read

I assumed that "Auto" on the controller would give me some action until I get around to making scenes etc?

na, like Darren said, nothing programmed although you should be able to use the slider/joystick to move the scanners without programming scenes
And second light should be set to address 17

because on the back i think there is an audio input. would it work if you plugged your mixer output into the audio input of the controller then the lights would move automatically???

It should work with no inputs , to get it programmed you must be able to set the lights first, so it should work manually from the controller. You will also need a terminator on the last dmx light in the chain.
Press fixture one button on the left, then try moving a slider. Light one should work.
Put light 2 dips to 17, press fixture 2 button , you will then controll light 2 with the sliders.

depends on the light. my smart scans have 3 ports.

Ah, so you weren't reading, you were looking at pictures. :p
I assumed that "Auto" on the controller would give me some action until I get around to making scenes etc?
Have you read the manual???
Auto means that it will go through the the scenes you have programmed and put into your bank(s).
So it will go through scenes 1- 8 in bank 2.. and will go from scene 1 to scene 2 at the desired time distance.. and will go through the change and the set time.. which are adjusted by the two right hand faders.
The controller *does not* let the lights do stuff without programming!
To get going you need to select the 'fixture' eg. Scanner 1.. and then adjust the sliders.. to make it do stuff.
If that makes sense :-)

Thanks chaps, excellent advice as always!
I think im going to get used to the led par cans first (as they are the same as the youtube guy) then move onto the scanners. No running before I can walk and all that!

Just remember that although the controller has 16 channels, your lights only have 6. So sliders 1-6 will operate your lights. Read the light fixture manual to see what each channel does. Then use the sliders 1-6. 1 being channel 1 of the light fixture, 6 being channel 6.

I learnt DMX on my 15 channel moving heads :p  lol! took me a while..
If your still having problems.. give us a shout on here.. or add me on msn.. and I can go through stuff 'real time' or even fire up the old webcam and show you what i do on my acme dmx master (same as yours)

Must admit though, i see little point in DMX for the average mobile disco gig.
Large fixed or semi permanent sites yes, but mobile work in hall and hotels?
Every room is different in size. DMX really comes into its own when programmed to the music, so really does seem pointless to me

BUt what about slow scanning fixtures for a first dance or a spotlight moment?
I remember seeing the first vid you put up on here and you had scanners going absoluely mental to a slow song and I did think at the time that you could do with a bit of DMXing there!
There are occasions when I think it looks great, and as we've said before, every little bit extra counts towards the big picture.
yes.. everyone room is different.. thats why, if use it to it's potential, you spend some time to just re-program the movers so that they 'use' the space available. - it doesn't take long and it isn't hard...
And if you have some software with 3d-visualistion you can do it before the disco.. as long as you check out the venue / know it.
Dmx has huge advantages for any disco... although I do use a mixture of P&P and dmx features... but it looks great.. and i;m happy with it....and it gives me something to play with

Agree.
I have about 7 or 8 programs for the venues I play regularly (relating to Paul's "semi-permanent" comment). Otherwise I use my desk to control colour during first dances and for positioning heads onto mirrorballs for smoochie numbers. The rest of the night they go on sound-to-light or a CA8 or similar.

Mainly because I want to slow the effects down for some tunes. AND I dont like the way the scanners spend time on the walls and ceilings, I want to bring them in a bit so they spend most of the time on the dancefloor.

I think DMX used in the right place, programmed to the music, looks fantastic.
But like i said, for the general mobile work i see little point.
I have tried it but now leave the controller at home. Its just one more thing to work with while cueing a song, taking a request, sipping a beer:beer1: .

I can see the point in that. But you need it running all night because if you turn the controller off, you turn your lights off, and if you use the
S2L feature of the controller you then get a poor light show waisting the effects internal programme

Then you are using it as a glorified S2L controller, with the abbilitty to slow them down(CA-8 controller) How do you program it as a follow spot then? Do you get the Bride and Groom to plot their moves before the function?
For a large disco using many effects dmx is needed, but for people like us with 4-8 effects?

I assume you use the joystick if there is one.
I'm no expert and would never profess to be, but I can see the benefits as told to me by such experts as DMX Wiiiiiiiiiill and Jamie Whitehouse.
How long did you use a controller for and what with before you decided it was no good for what you want?

Not quite sure why you say that.
As a Pro theatre followspotter & technician i can assure you we do not program in the followspots!
They are manually operated.. just as you do it with dmx.
Basically the best way to do it is only use one fixture.. and then use the faders (and maybe the joystick but it isn't very accurate) to slowly follow the bride and groom around.
Although I should point out i'm not a fan of doing this as it isn't very accurate and doesn't look very good.. and you normally end up lighting them from the back.. so not beneficial to the 'audience' anyway..

answer to post 35.
About 2 months. Looked great at home when i programmed it, but totally different when in a big hall or hotel room. Never really worked with the music.
As for slow dances, i just turn all lights off apart from the LED curtain and my LED bars.
DMX is really in truth for making lights react to the music, specific pre planned playlists, for shows , live concerts etc where the music is all pre planned

NO.
You can set them as you say, but you then let the controller run through the program YOU have created.
The controller will run S2L though.
Basically you sit down for an afternoon( or a weekend), program every move of every light, save that program in the controller called " scenes"
When finished it will run the program you ask it to.
So one program may be just two effects running slow for a slow dance, other programs may be full on all lights strobing , or all lights set with red filter on etc

Its a bit like making a cartoon say Wallace and Grommet, where the final scene (film) is made from months of moving the figures one move at a time
yup..
although computer programs can make it easier.. specially with movers..
Instead of setting up every single 'step'.. you can use pre-defined movement patterns or make your own.. saving quite a lot of tedious work.
Totally agree with the patience factor though!

So, if I understand you correctly Sam.....
With DMX Controller - you programme the movement, colour, etc of the lights and can set it off to work those movements to the beat of the music (in laymens terms, it moves to the music therefore 'sound to light')
Without DMX Controller - it runs through it's own movements, colours, etc to the beat of the music (ie S2L)

yeh.. although with the controller i don't find it works amazingly.. too jumpy between seens (eg. mic too sensitive on my controller)

But most controllers have a mic... or a mic input so that the scenes you have set can be 'triggered' by sound.
So why are Darren and Paul saying they don't work/move S2L?  (More confused than ever!)
I didn't say that. (Did I?)
Where's DMX Will or Jamie when you need them?
And all the dmx settings on the lights would be ignored?
They are no longer set master slave, they are set to addresses 1, 17, 33 etc
NO!
i am not talking about just unplugging it!
I am talking generally.. controller vs no controller

no,
Without a controller it would run from the effects if all the DMX cables were unpluged
Unless of course you set the first as master & the rest as slave :sj:
not when connected to the controller, even i'm confused on something i know now, i need more beer
not if still connected to the controller, and you would then need to reset all the dmx switches on the effects too

I thought you were assuming you could just switch the controller off then revert to the effects inbuilt S2L program.

Wow, this is turning into a mamouth thread (what have I started),
Thanks for all the replies. Im going to soldier on with the controller for now.
Does anyone know how you set multiple lights to do different effects within one scene. ie The pars stay with a red wash whilst the scanners and barrels do something else.
At the moment its looking like one effect per scene?

You use the buttons on the left to choose the effect. select effect one get that effect where you want it, then select effect 2 and so on set them in a position/colour, then repeat all the above for the next position and so on untill you have a show then set it.
Like i say, think of an animation cartoon.
Move one character say a foot, then move another character one move and so on, then take a frame, do it again take anopther frame, eventually you have a animation film.
Buttons 1-12 on the left are for each effect in your show.
Button 1 effect 1 address1, button 2 effect 2 address17 and so on.
So,
Push button 1 adjust light 1, push button 2 and adjust light 2 and so on.
When all lights have been set for that part of the show set a scene, then just repeat untill finished.
Easier to talk and explain than type
