Does anyone know when the Cortex HDC-500 will be available in the UK?

It's basically half an HDC-1000 (hence the name!). In other words a single hard drive controller, and it's only 1u high - so I thought it would be perfect for back up, but no UK companies seem to be selling them yet.

Back up for what? If your main cortex goes down then you're left with only 1 player (unless you buy 2 of them)

If your very careful and do a bit of chat between tracks and dont need fade in fade out--you could do it--but it doesnt sound too flexible really:eek:

The Cortex 1000 is available on e bay at well under £400

You don't understand, Steve.

Let me clarify my intentions.

I plan to use a Cortex HDC-1000 as my main playout system, but also intend to use an HDC-500 as well as a single desktop CD player.

Therefore, if the HDC-1000 packs up I'll still have the HDC-500 and CD player, if the HDC-500 packs up I'll have the HDC-1000 and CD player, and if the CD player packs up I'll have the HDC-1000 and HDC-500.

It will be more flexible to have both Cortex models, as this will give me 3 digital playout sources. It will also be handy to have the CD player, not just for back up, but also for those occasions when I'm handed a CD containing the first dance or a special request.

So, back on topic...does anyone have any idea when the HDC-500 will be available in the UK?

rob if you have got to have your cds with you anyway it would make more sense to me to just have 2 table top cd players no hard drives to go down and all , plus as said you will be taking your cds out anyway ,

the other way i would suggest is to go fully digital with 2 cortexes 1 for back up cuts down on space and no cds needed at all?

Dave,

I WON'T have my CDs with me as well, I will only carry a handful of party CDs for back up in case of problems with one of the Cortex controllers.

It will also be handy to have the single CD player for when I get handed a disc to play by the client.

Apart from that, I intend to be fully digital with the 2 Cortexes.

Exactly why I went down the Laptop + D2 route rather than the 'pair of D2s' route.

Laptop can be left to its own devices for background music, serves as a backup or additional 2 decks if I'm feeling in the mood for a mix, and lets me play out those occasional crowd-borne CDs.

Rob, why not take a look at a cheap laptop (say £250 for budget) plus a copy of OTS Turntables silver (£30) - will give you all that flexibility and let you dump the CD's.

I take out 4 USB-powered HDDs - 2 of 'master playlist' and 2 of 'library/archive' material. Keep one of the library ones in the van. So that's 2 connected to my d2 and 1 connected to my laptop with a spare on hand.

'Master Playlist' is all the stuff I commonly play whereas 'library' is all the older stuff there for the occasional request or for reinforcement if a particular genre goes down well. Usually albums of material, rather than singles.

ok see where your going with it personally would try for a second 1000 unit tho as back up.

on the handed a cd front works both ways that "here is 70 minutes of drum and bass please could you play it" ................................

sorry no cd players :D :D :D :D

C'mon chaps! Each to their own! I agree that it's not the way that I would assume to be the best/easiest/most flexible, etc ..... but is anyone going to even TRY and answer Rob's original question? :p :p ....If that's the way he wants to do things, that's up to him :D

Are any of the updates worth bothering with anyway Dave?

I seem to be doing fine with the basic original and no updates:)

Certainly no play out problems of any kind--
