In Christian hagiography Saint George (ca. 275-281–April 23, 303) was a soldier of the Roman Empire, from the then Greek-speaking Anatolia, now modern day Turkey, who was venerated as a Christian martyr. Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church and Oriental Orthodox Churches. Immortalised in the tale of George and the Dragon, he is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of Aragón, Canada, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, Portugal, Serbia, Russia, and Palestine, as well as the cities of Genoa,Beirut, Ljubljana, Freiburg and Moscow, as well as a wide range of professions, organisations and disease sufferers.http://planetsmilies.net/vicious-smiley-1829.gif (http://planetsmilies.net)

And it's like the last final when suddenly you couldn't get a seat in the pub that we'd watched every other game in.

Why? Because it was full of morons in England football shirts, who were only there because it meant they could get a drink earlier than usual & it gave them the opportunity to chant ENG ER LAND, ENG ER LAND for 80 minutes.

They clearly didn't even know the rules as they kept cheering when ENG ER LAND were off side, couldn't understand why you can't throw the ball forward etc.

Solitaire Events Ltd
07-10-2007, 04:34 PM
And of course you're only allowed to watch your national team if you're a proper supporter and go to every game home and away, as well as watching all the guinness premiership games, which I assume you do Steve as you're a proper supporter?

I suspect that there are some rugby followers that like football and vice versa. I also suspect that just because people have a sense of national identity by donning their countries colours, it does not make them a moron.

These people obviously knew nothing about the game & were only there for a beer & some sort of misguided jingoistic notion that because Engerland were playing they should be shouting about it. To the extent that (even though England won) it spoiled the game for everyone I was with (it took until either the second or third pub after to get them out of their grumpy mood )

I can seriously sense some sporting snobbery here Steve. You can't watch rugby 'cos you don't watch it the rest of the time or really understand it.

Just like football supporters whio don't think you are a loyal supporter unless you trek the length and breadth of the counrty following your team, you're not allowed an opinon.

I don't follow club rugby, but enjoy the tournaments and internationals. I don't follow county cricket, but enjoy the Ashes and the 20-20. Same could be said of any sport too.

As I'm probably more used to translating 'Steve Speak' than most of you, what I think he is trying to say is that it's the people who have no interest in the actual game itself (whether it be at all levels or just for major tournaments, etc), but go out and just use it as an excuse to shout 'EN-GER-LAND' - ie in the pub and not even watching the game, but just being a pain in the proverbial and disrupting others enjoyment, etc that annoy him.

Steve has no interest in football on a day-to-day level, but he quite enjoys watching something like the world cup, so that definitely isn't what he's getting at.

Why would they disrupt others enjoyment then? I mean, being in an alcohol fuelled enviremont in a pub with a lot of friends and supporters with a major sporting event on. You'd expect people to sit quietly wouldn't you?

If Steve was that worried about being disrupted then perhaps he should stay at home and watch it, instead of being in a pub with atmosphere etc

I still think this is sporting snobbery. I've seen and heard it before from rugby supporters who think their game is far too good for any footy fan to watch.

I've seen and heard it before from rugby supporters who think their game is far too good for any footy fan to watch.C'mon Darren.... that' not what I meant and you know it! We're not talking about an 'atmosphere' here. ...and it's not just Rugby. We've been in the pub to watch both Football and Rugby and when there is a good atmosphere, plenty of beer, and a good bit of noise, it all adds to the occasion, but when you get idiots in who don't give one hoot about the game being shown and are just being a complete pain, then it puts a downer on it for everyone else.

What about the football World Cup?

he started it :D

I come from a school where we played Rugby not football so most of my mates are into their weekly Rugby rather than footie . Leicester Tigers get talked about in the pub alot and quite a few got to games etc.

having said that I never played wasn't allowed tbh I didnt really want to anyway just like watching it.

Don't be ridiculous, of course there is going to be a rowdy atmosphere in any alcohol fuelled environment.

What I also expect people who are sporting their country's colours (albeit for the wrong sport) & chanting, to actually be watching the game & not just jumping up & down in front of the TV (more often than not with their backs to it).

I also expect to be able to watch the match myself without the moronic obstacles to obstruct my view. Something I had been able to do during every other match of the tournament.

When was the last time you saw crowd violence at a rugby match. To paraphrase you, I rest my case! As I can fully sympathise with those who say it. Personally I'd like to see more people into rugby as long as the hooligan element isn't involved, the more the merrier regardless of what other sports they like.

So now people can't get drunk and enjoy themselves in pubs?

Come on, you're not actually telling me that these people went to the pub just to annoy other people who wanted to watch the game?

So why did Steve have to post that they were morons 'cos they were wearing footy shirts. That is what I object to and sorry, but there's always been a certain amount of snobbery towards football by rugby fans.

Now we come to the crux of the matter.

You want everyone else to play by your rules because you think that's what should be happening.

You didn't mention that they were in the way earlier did you? Strange that isn't it? Earlier you were objecting because they were chanting and didn't know the rules of the game.

Yes, I agree that must be annoying, but that has nothing to do with the fact that they are footy fans. It has more to do with the fact that they are drunken idiots.

nothing to do with the fact that they are footy fans. It has more to do with the fact that they are drunken idiots.I agree completely with that Darren.... just as I object to the term 'Football Hooligans': it actually has nothing to do with the sport, it's just unfortunate that these idiots have chosen football to 'attach' themselves to.

Drunken idiots who were:

Not there for any other game (England ones included)

Not watching the game

Blatantly clueless about what was going on then they did remember that there was a game on.

Obstructing the view of the game for those that were trying to watch it

Drowning out the commentary (not essential as there is no commentary at the match itself, but nice to be able to hear if one is available)

Making general nuisances of themselves

& only there because the pub was open from 7am

Morons pure & simple.

Did you read this bit?

Now we come to the crux of the matter.

You want everyone else to play by your rules because you think that's what should be happening. So, England are in the Football World Cup Final (held in a country that means the matches are being shown here 7 or 8 am, & you've watched every match from the first one in the group stages in your local with no problem. You decide you are going to watch the final at the same pub (seems logical after all, it's what you've done for the rest of the tournament).

How would you feel if you got there 5 minutes after opening time & it was full of rugby fans who were......

I would imagine you would be a little peeved to say the least.

But rugby fans wouldn't be at a footy match would they Steve?

Ultimately, this is more about drunken idiots and not fans of either football or rugby. The rest we will have to agree to disagree on.

I missed all this, and I can see where Steve is coming from. I'm not a rugby fan, and so won't go to watch Scotland, as I couldn't care less (although good luck to them etc)

As a football fan, I watch just about every Scotland match, whether it be agains't the Faroe Islands or Italy/France. If they are playing a smaller team like the Faroes, I can go down my local, get a seat, and enjoy the game with my mates. However, when they are playing a bigger team like Italy or France, I can't get a seat, as there are all these people there that I've never seen before... women taking up the seats who are obviously tagging along and lost interest in the game after about 10 minutes (I'm not being sexist or anything, it's a factual observation)

Not a big rugby fan myself (the game is too stop/start for my liking), and even when I do watch it, it's not England that I support (Ireland - but enough said about that in this tournament) but even I can appreciate the climb that England have made during the course of the event!
