It was my turn to do the pub tonight & in all honesty I didn't think it would be that good (it was less than half it's usual capacity).

I played all the requests that were asked for & the evening largely consisted of Soul, Rock, Rock 'n' Roll, Indie & Ska.

There was an unusual percentage of dancers to total amount of punters (mainly blokes).

Anyway as I was on my way out I was stopped & the following was said to me. "Thanks Steve, you've made my 50th birthday". The person who said it? Lee Thompson of Madness. As I said in the title, made my night too http://planetsmilies.net/vicious-smiley-1853.gif (http://planetsmilies.net)

Wow, that's pretty cool, did you know it was him beforehand, or did he tell you??

I've met him a few times, we're on nodding terms as it were. Haven't seen him in about 3-4 years, but I knew who it was.

Hope you played one of his sax solosNow why would I do that? Probably the worst move you can make if there is a musician / singer at one of your gigs, is to play some of their stuff. I don't think I even played any of the original versions of stuff they covered. Lee is modest to he point of being embarrassed when he gets recognised so I didn't draw attention to the fact he was in, I got him moonstomping to Symarip though.

I wouldn't normally have posted this sort of thread (I'm not into blowing my own trumpet or namedropping), but as it was someone I have a lot of respect for musically, I thought I'd share, that one comment will stay with me for a long time.

I played Diamond lights by Hoddle and Waddle (someone requested it) at one of my gigs when Glen Hoddle was there and he promptly left...

That's why you don't play stuff by people in attendance

Especially a crap song like that!

Actually, I normally wouldn't, but this drunken woman wouldn't leave me alone, so I played it just to get rid of her.
