iMove 250s

I was thinking about buying a couple of these and was wondering if anyone on here uses them, or has any opinions about them.

I have used the search facility but it didn't really help. Would really like to see a video of these lights in action. Have seen the video on the Prolight website, but that was a bit uninspirering.

There's quite a few of us here that use them. Considering that they are on the 'budget' end of the moving head price spectrum, they're suprisingly good units. I've had more favourable comments from guests about the iMove's than I've had about any other effect I've ever used. The video you mention has the units working through the in-built programs (if I recall correctly)?, although the in-built programs are more than adequate, my advice would be to spend the time with a DMX controller and program some custom light scenes. It took me a while to do mine but it really allowed the units to 'come into their own'.

i have the imove 250w moving heads and there great.Only down side is there very heavy so i also sit mine on top of there flightcase.

I am in the process of editing a couple of vids at the moment witht them in. Once I've compressed them, I'll stick them on youtube.

As people said.. lots of people ahve them.. and they have been discussed a lot too.

Everyone generally seems very impressed with them.. although if it were me I would go for lights which were a bit more 'advanced' with more features.. such as prisms etc..

I am currently using 15 channel Pilot 250s.. which are very nice indeed :-)

They may take slightly longer to reset, usually about 30 seconds, if you're talking about the Martin units. Not sure about the cheaper ones. Then you have to wait around a minute for the lamp to reach full brightness. Once this is done, if you're running with a DMX controller, they are ready to use straight away.

In terms of controls, they are basically the same, it's just that the moving head has a bigger Pan / Tilt capability. They still run on 2 main channels, one for each direction.

ohh rite. so really you will only need channels 1 & 2 for direction??? or would a joy stick be easier to controll the lights??? sorry its off topic by the way

The channels vary on different products. For example, on the Mac 250s:-

1 is Shutter
2 is Dimmer
3 is Colour
4 is Gobo
5 is Gobo rotation direction / speed
6 is Focus
7 is Prism

Channels 8 & 10 are Pan and Tilt, but the unit also uses channels 10 & 11 to give more accurate movement. For disco work, you wouldn't need the accurate movement, so would just use the standard 2 channels.

Additional channels control a few extras, but again not something you would need for Disco work.

Joystick control may work, if you can assign the correct channels to it.

I use the Show Desiigner 1 for 8x heads very easy to use ,i think Thomann sell it re badged under GLP

Yes you can but most are ex hire a have been thrashed, buy new if you can stretch the budget as you may be buying a load of grief.

when i phoned up Hm revenue and asked about this when i asked for my application for being self employed the lady on the phone said you need an income of about £56,000 a year (after or before tax im not sure).

Anyway.
For the same price of two of those units at 550 you can get two mac 250s.

Both MACs are in good working order and are running the latest version 1.6 software.

2 x Omega brackets, 2 x 16A IECs and 2 x safeties are included in the selling price.

Also included are two very low hours Phillips lamps that have barely served 10% of their life (under 300 hours on a 3000 hour lamp)

They are second hand (so have all of the usual cosmetic marks) but both units have just been fully stripped, serviced and cleaned by a Martin Certified and Highly Experienced Engineer.

Following service the units have been left on self test for a couple of hours (to reach full opperating temperature) and they test fine with no problems. (They have also been checked using dmx)

Units have standard Colours, Gobos and Lenses fitted

Have the best from the world leaders in Intelligent Lighting - not cheap immitations!

was thinking about it last night (as you do) and thought I would point out another advantage of getting Macs..
You can dry hire them out for about 100 pounds per unit per week..
so if you found that your disco bookings were slow.. you still have the potential to get an extra 200 pounds weekly (subject to anyone wanting them)

Whereas you would struggle to hire out moving heads like Geni
