New Trend For 1st Dance?

Well, for some time now we have been trying to pin down the 1st dance for a couple. We met them, got a list of requests from them and their guests (they sent a sheet out with invitations asking for input) and discussed the 1st dance.

We talked them out of 30 secs of a cheesy smooch like Celine Dion running straight into oops upside your head, pointing out that early in the evening the guests might not be inclined (or oiled enough) to sit on the floor. They agreed that we were right and it was changed to a limbo (Hot,Hot,Hot)

We have given them a list of recommended tracks and tonight have received an e-mail. They still can't make up their minds so have decided to pick 3 tracks and get the guests to vote using the Mike Reid Run-around system.

So we will not know until then which track it will be. :bang:

I know they said that they wanted the wedding to be different (the guests are going on a sightseeing bus around London prior to the evening function), but .............. well ........... :daft:

I did a wedding in Whipsnade Zoo & all the guests went on the open top buss around the park while I was setting up.

Never heard of the guests choosing the first dance though

Never came across guests selecting first dance either.It should be up to the bride and groom as its theyre big day.I also think that a first dance should be a traditional ballad.

Traditionally it should be a song that means something to them both, but that seems to have gone out the window too (How many weddings had James Blunt - You're beautiful within months of it's release).

I don't see why it should be a ballad though (especially as I hate 99% of them)

I also think that a first dance should be a traditional ballad.If it's not something that the B&G are into, it kind of defeats the object of the first dance, doesn't it? IMO, I think it's great that more B&Gs are chosing something that they want, rather than chosing something they think they should have

I'm not sure how you are privy to that information?

Some couples want to and those who don't really want to either don't or go for a 30 seconds on their own and then invite everyone else on the floor option..

Talking to our clients, a lot of them only do it because they feel pressured into it, because it's what's expected.

Have had everything from prince to Megadeth requested as a first song but the worst had to be Cha Cha Slide

Its as ever up to your client to dictate there daysa first dance

I didn't even get that the other month as bride went sick after food (too much booze I believe) she went to bed for 2 hours to sober up she only came down to throw her flowers then then dissappeared even after that. It killed the whole reason for the night and guests were even miffed to say the least

If they don't have a special song, and have spent ages thinking of what they might want for the first dance, but have come up with absolutely no ideas whatsover, I think they should simply scrap the first dance.

I can't really understand why any couple would want the GUESTS to choose THEIR first dance...I think that's crazy!

Last year I did a few weddings where there was no first dance, so it's certainly not unheard of.

Personally, I'd prefer to have loads of general wedding photos, but none of a first dance...rather than photos of me & my bride doing the first dance to a song which meant absolutely nothing to us, or which was chosen by the guests!

They are picking 3 tracks for the guests to vote on. so it's not going to be that random.
Actually, I'm quite looking forward to it now. They will be engaging the crowd from the start and might make our job a little easier.

As for our 1st dance, we had an Elvis tribute act (Marty Tempest) and a disco, so Marty sang Hawaiian Wedding Song for us.

Update

Well, it went really well.

Had a problem early on, keeping them under control for the 1st dance as they were ready to party from 7pm.

The vote was between

Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me
Stylistics - You Make Me Feel Brand New

The Bride actually wanted Paul Weller, so, with a little disguised pschology, she got it! We lost the silly bit for second dance (Oops Upside Your Head and Hot,Hot,Hot limbo came later) and went into Nights In White Satin (from the please play list). Packed floor from them joining the couple in the second half of the 1st Dance. :thumbs_up:

Then it was party time. Packed floor all evening until we finished with an eastend finale (requested by family) of Knees Up Mother Brown & Hokey Cokey. Final track New York, New York at 12.45.

Music varied from 60's to 00's and, yes Darren, I did play Stonebridge and Dee-Lite in a set. :whistle:
Also had Razorlight, Killers, Madness, Specials, Althea & Donna, Status Quo, Dion and the Who (all requests) in between. Nelly B's You're Beautiful went well.

Noisiest part of the night? Sweet Child / Livin' On A Prayer / Don't Stop Me Now set. Good thing there was no sound limiter. Usual idiot came up during Sweet Child to tell me what would really go well next (Razorlight - Mr Brightside) but I declined his help. I did play it later, in another set, though. He was very helpful most of the night, explaining my job to me, unsuccessfully, I'm afraid. But he did say it was a great night, so maybe I do know what I'm doing, folks. :lol:

Oh, and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was a riot! As was the cheer when the guests who sneeked out to watch the match came back and I announced the result.

The bride was really happy. They even danced to Oasis, Pulp and Supergrass tracks which she wanted. Mind you, I did pick the tracks for their ability to connect with the rest of the people.

Her whole day had worked out perfectly, just how SHE wanted it. :clap:
