the question is

If using two 4 speakers, would one amp be better per pair or 1 amp for all 4 speakers (assuming the amp goes to 4 ohms and all that)

your thoughts

It depends what the speakers are - whether they are a pair of bins and a pair of tops, or whether you are using 4 full range speakers.

I think generally most people will say it's better to run with 2 amps and a crossover to get the most from your cabs.

Let me explained better, its purley a question, wether your using xcross overs, full range speakers or seprate bass bins.

Assume the setup is standard for what ever is needed, the speakers work either way 4 or 8 ohms as most do and the amp does 4 and 8 ohms, what would be best 2 amps or 1?

is there a difference in loudness, quality and or reliability

A basic question, suley 90% of dj's use a standard speaker system, unless you got a void or bose system.

I think it depends on amp if you use a decent quality amp with enough power that will run at 4ohm then not sure it would make a difference.

However if you have an active crossover it may make a difference in output power if you use 2 amps rather than one as i did read somewhere, dont ask me where that passive crossovers consume a certain perentage of the amps output so a 2 amp system with an active crossover would theoretically be louder even if the supposed output was equal. But i am sure someone on here may be better informed on this and will correct me if i am wrong.

My m3 controller will work as an active crossover but i have never used it that way and in larger venues run 4 speakers from one amp with no probs.

Darren gave the exactly correct answer. Let's have a go as well.

1) Two pairs of full range speakers. My pref, one amp. Most efficient option, but would have backup amp.

2) Subs( Bass bins) and tops. X-over, and two amps. Better sound sound, and control. Possibility of using one amp if one dies.

OK, let's see if we can answer the exact question! IMHO one amp, two pairs of speakers in parallel ( whether full range, subs or tops) giving four ohms load per channel, max output from amp, without sacrificing reliability. ( But still have a backup amp!)
