I'm sure most of you are happy with the smoking ban, and the weather of late has been almost good, plus reports from scotland that heart attacks are down (amazing in such a short time), but now reality is perhaps starting to bite, as are the councils too.
Local pub tonight in Bicester, a small town doing karaoke, the boss comes back from the pub general meet, all locals in a social club, bad news all round.
2 pubs selling up now another 2 after xmas, for a small town of 11 pubs thats a sizable chunk, yes, all down to the smoking ban ( and yes it is) plus the councils are now being hard on the ban, even a socail club has been fined for:- someone smoking a fag outside whilst playing aunt sally, also all places now facing fines for one thing and another all to do with smoking, and the best bit to top it all, even in the beer gardens you cant take drinks outside to have a fag because its too noisey, if they dont comply they dont get there licences renewed when they are due. Its not just pubs, its social clubs, night clubs, hotels and work places.
This is all down to the glorious smoking ban, i live in Bicester, I rely on these small places for during week gigs and the social clubs for weekend work, let alone the hotels for weddings etc etc....
I have first hand experience for gigs next year being cancelled due to dwinderling crowds and thats in the big 300 seater social clubs, frankly they cant afford the risk anymore, and with heavy handed counils breathing down there backs they dont need it, and no this is not me being negitive (or a smoker), this is fact straight from the horses mouth.
So all you non and ex smokers and people jumping for joy (even more to the people that said they would now go to pubs and never did) a big fat cheers, because I recken in a few years time there wont be many discos/karaokes/bands around, but ebay will be busy.
the cold weather is coming the coucils have got heavy handed and layed the law down, no lights or heaters no chairs and no drinks.
what ever next, sound limiters

That might be true for you now, as it was here, straight after the ban - now, a year or so down the track, now that the idea has sunk in, people are back to going out again... especially the (recently ex-) smokers...
...and the smokers are smoking between bars on a night's crawl ;)
I suspect that many non-smokers have gotten into the habit of not going out on a regular basis because of smoking (apart from work, myself included) and it will take a while for that habit to change. In NZ non-smokers outnumber smokers more than 4:1 - given that smokers are disproportionately represented in the older age groups and/or lower socio-economic groups it would seem likely that eventually there will be more people spending more money on a night out... eventually.

i suspect anyone whos pub/club has closed down already had a business that was on the rocks already. i know a lot of pub companies have used it as an excuse to have a "clear out" shall we say.
i personally dont think our business will be affected in any significant way.

I'm guessing that this varies a lot in different parts of the country.
I rely on 5 pub quiz nights a week for two thirds of my income. Since the ban came in, there has been no difference in the number of people in the pubs or the number of people doing my quiz.
The only difference is that smokers keep nipping outside for a fag.
However, I no longer have to breathe in other people's cigarette smoke 5-6 nights a week, so I'm now less likely to die early from cancer.
I'm trying to understand why the effects of the smoking ban should vary so much in different parts of the country, but I'm struggling to come up with an answer.

im with you on this one. as i have trouble with my breathing from time to time, having this ban is go for me as i will be able to breath "cleaner air" when and if i ever go out and when i do my disco's.
its not a good thing for smokers but i know a few smokers who have quit because of the ban and now they wish they had done it sooner.

this was on the news a few weeks ago apparently some pubs they were saying have coined it in by putting up lovely shelters in beer gardens with heaters and the like others mainly on main roads where they cannot do this have really suffered and many living in threat of closure.
on this note saw a lorry the other day with the company name on which i forget and several pictures of these smoking shelters on the side so people are obviously getting in on the action on these and they are becoming big business.

I'd hazard a guess that the areas most effected are also more depressed (socio-economically) - just means that the punters are now popping down to the offie and drinking and smoking at home, which actually saves them money which may or may not be put to better use.

Al,
That's a very logical idea.
After all, I live about 10 miles from central London...hardly the most depressed area of the country!

Mike, I think it's case of adapt or die... if these clubs can't take advantage of the ban, rather than sit and do nothing, then of course they will suffer.
Have they tried advertising quiz/bingo/karaoke/disco/cabaret/theme nights to pull in new faces?? Another market that pubs and clubs ar thriving in now, if they had the foresight, is food.
My area isn't particularly wealthy or upper class, but I've only seen one social club close - and that's been coming for a couple of years anyway due to riot police out to it every second weekend.. :(

Doesn't help the pub & club trade much but I have done more gigs in marquees and at private venues this year. Perhaps its not just the smoking ban causing people to look for alternatives but also the extortionate cost that venues charge for functions. Most B&G's get a bit cheesed off when the price is hiked up for anything to do with a wedding and some I have spoken to have said they want their guests to have the freedom to do what they want and they don't want be tied in to using the venues caterers & DJ.
One local pub went smokeless last January though is is still doing fine. Also no other sign of any local pubs closing and we have more than the average town due to being a coaching stop on the way to London & all the old Inns are still here. Walking along the high street I've noticed that a lot of the pubs are now doing entertainment, live bands, quiz nights, Karaoke, DJ's, mega screen TV, special offers on meals and food so perhaps the ban has been of another benefit to local punters making the landlords get off their backsides and try harder to provide something to attract customers.
As Wenslydale said, its probably the pubs that were struggling before that have been hit the most. If the landlords aren't prepared to do something different to attract customers then they will fall by the wayside.

Haverhill is classed as the fastest growing town in Anglia currently and Im afraid there has been a noticable turn down in trade due to smoking laws coming into place one pub is down £1000 per week another £3000 the later being the busiest pub in town the first being my local sport pub. Both use to be humming with people now the £3000 is being put up for sale and has now cut its evening trade to barely thurs fri and sat nights they have admitted that this is due to the smoking ban recntly. Please note they are open during the day for coffee and food trade
But they also commented over the last 10 years that people just aint coming out as often as they used too with modern technology as a main reason and cheaper booze in supermarkets being the other its cheaper to invite a few mates round for a x-box night in with booze than go down the local.
Also this has had a knock on pub footie teams dart and pool teams with people finding it hard to get a team together, another main stay of the licenced trades??

I really agree with this! the one thing we have nearly always had in this country is to chose!
I've seen so many pubs close in my area since the ban it's unreal and a real worry and it's one of the reasons i don't go to pubs anymore! (apart from the cost) I do understand the reasoning for people that don't smoke but think we should have had the option to make our own minds up!
most pubs have more than one bar so why not have one bar for smokers & one bar for non-smokers
And if it is really that bad why do our illustrious goverment still sell fags (silly question) I really think it's all just a PR thing i.e being seen to do the right thing but still copping the cash (bit like the ozone thing)
I think in about the next 5-10 years pubs will be a thing of the past and they wont exsist to be replaced with contintal type bars
just for the record I do smoke (and respect those that don't) and I also ran a pub for 3 years!

I think one point needs to be reiterated. One of the main reasons for the ban is to improve working conditions for staff, so how could splitting a bar into smoking and non-smoking help? Where would you put the big screen TV/karaoke/quiz? How would you enforce the areas? Unworkable.

Nothing is un-workable I had 2 bars with screens in each? and if a member of staff didn't smoke why would I put them in a smoking bar! they had the choice!
No one has to work in an enviroment they don't want to, as I said it's all down to choice! if you don't like the enviroment don't go there!

Indeed people always knew pubs were smokey environments. If you don't want to work in a smokey environment, there are plenty of other places to work.

And let's be honest, it's very rarely a career, working behind a bar. (unless you own or manage the place)

I agree there should have been separate areas for smoking or to be accurate the compulsion to introduce smoke free areas. As it is I used to be the nice old boy who sat in the corner with a couple of friends sipping a pint of real ale and smoking a cigar. I am now a criminal if I do that BUT there are still noisy, possibly underage, youngsters getting hammered and shouting and screaming profanities at each other and anyone else that gets in the way, jabbering into mobile phones etc etc etc

On that note, two nightclubs in swindon have sold up in the last couple of months....
why..??
The smoking ban.....
A few of the others have done ok by opening up patio areas for smokers to go outside the club for a puff but the two that have sold up didnt have the space to do this......
numbers went down until the owners gave up...
sign of times.............

I dont smoke myself. Ive never smoked in my entire life. Other than passive smoking when smoking was allowed.
Tbh. I like the smoking ban in the way i can now go in a bar without having to breathe any of it in.
I have worked with a singer about a year ago who wasnt well at all. He had to leave the stage because of bad lungs The poor bloke couldnt breathe. That happened through working in clubs with people smoking in them. The bloke told me he has never smoked in his life. The poor bloke. That was all through passive smoking.

at my work there are smoking shelters all over the site. smoking is allowed on site but only in these shelters. its just a type of green house but with only 2 sides and a roof.
maby somthing like these could be used where they can do what they have to do then go back go back and join there friends???

Cambourne. 4 miles from me, and got my Xmas residency there... they have one pub and one hotel currently.
Cambourne will be nice when it's finished (about 5 years time) - as long as HM Govt don't get their way and stick another 4,000 houses on the green spaces there like they are planning to. Which has jacked up the price of my house through the roof as we are (a) nearer to Cambridge than them and (b) don't have roaming packs of free-range chav causing merry mayhem like in Cambourne.
Does have a Morrison's though! :D
Toff Communes? You obviously haven't been to Haverhill...
