I've used ~ to symbolise approximately, it is the correct symbol mathematically.

It also used to bring down the console in most first person shooters of old (Quake etc)

It's also the ~ over the 'n' in lasagñe so it's VERY important ;)

Very handy as a delimiter for text files, too, as it's seldom typed accidentally.
