Just as i thought i had seen it all.........

Went to a car boot sale today and was amazed yet disturbed by one of the items a guy was selling.

2 "Very" home made and dodgy looking light boxes. They were about the same size as a standard hifi speaker. Basically they consisted of a ply wood box, with 3 spot bulbs and holders fixed in, 3 big holes drilled in the front for the lights to show though and the fronts finished with some sort of silver foil and to control them, they came complete with some sort of controller and wierd wiring matrix taped together that looked more like something that brought Frankenstien to life. In all my years of the business, i have never seen anything quite like it and its not exactly what you would call industry standard. They would carry no safety kite and they certainly shouldnt be on sale to the public, in fact if they were in a shop like that, action would soon be taken against them. I nearly said something to the guy about how dangerous and stupid he was being but then thought it wont make a slightest difference and will just carry on doing it. Maybe if someone was killed using his apparatus he may learn when its all too late :bang:

Christmas comes and he thinks to himself "im going to go be a Dj"
off he goes with his bargain lights from the carboot and a Hi-Fi

I will next week if he is back again, might be a small chance he is there every week or at least often.

To be a gas fitter you have to be registered with CORGI
To be an electrician you have to take a main exam and then one every year to keep your status,

but you can stand at a car boot and sell dangerous items to unsuspecting members of the public and be free to do so. and the public can be daft enough to buy them.

The sad thing is The majority of djs are probably not industry standard and this sort of home made kit is probably very common if you think of the number of very good professional guys and girls that post on this forum ...... i think that the most we have had online at one time is 200 and something then go and all count the number of telephone numbers in our yellow pages under discos there will collectively be thousands

no im not saying the rest are this sort of person at all but what i am getting at is that lots and lots COULD be and who knows??????

lots of hobbyists make things to varying degrees of professionalism , should you have said something ???? would he have actually cared ? was the item PAT tested? may it have just looked untidy yet been certified as safe??

Well i did have a look on the back and have a look at the wiring and if it was ever pat tested it wouldnt have passed at least visual test now as there was a couple of splits in the lead and the coloured wires showing though. There was nothing proffesional about his work if he made them as the sockets on the back werent even attached properly. I have challanged people before about selling knock off copied cd's with no joy that they couldnt care less so i doubt he would have listened anyway.

indeed mate last time i did a boot sale there was 3 stalls of knock off cds and 1 of dvds they were swamped from start to finish ... and two coppers in attendance the whole time walking round.

these people don't care and sadly neither does the majority of society.

Yes its a massive business and people think they are getting a bargain at 5000 mp3's for 40 quid. A disco starter package they classed one of the cd sets as. When there are people selling stuff like that how are real dj's like us people on here supposed to make a living when it is so easy for anyone to have a go.

I think you'll find a lot of the older Dj's would have seen this before, if fact when I first started it was very common (about 1970)

I had a light box/deck stand that had about 40 pigmy bulbs in the front of it and the wiring was soldered directly onto the bulbs? and I got this from a shop!!!! (no names mentioned)
but you have to take into account at the time there wasn't much else about that a mobile could afford!

but your right in this day and age this should not happen and this bloke should be shot, Yet another nightmare from boot fares I'm afraid

I dont think there's much anyone can do about it because the police can't be bothered and not anyone else really!

And to be really truthful I'm not really impressed with the pat thing, I recently had my gear pat tested not one thing failed dispite the fact the mains in on my rack had insulation tape around the socket and most of the iec leads had 13 amp fuses in them!

I would rather the police concentrate their efforts on catching violent criminals than knocked off CD's and old light boxs.

Check your local council for guidance on car-boot selling - often it's only shop purchased items that are covered I believe unless you can get real evidence that things are dodgy.

I'd never purchase anything electrical from a car boot sale and never have.

True to a point but would they be interested?

I think not if it was a dvd seller maybe, they can earn lots of money in fines of that, conterfeits that they can earn cash money out of is what there interested in othewise bootfares would shut down going by some of the rubbish sold at them! Trading standard's are just like a bussiness they want profit!
