View Full Version : Inappropriate Tracks

I've just taken a booking to supply music for an event run by a Womens Refuge charity.

I've been thinking about the music to play and have decided that some tracks would not be a good idea in the circumstances.

I shall be avoiding

Smack My Bitch Up

Bang On The Ear (Waterboys)

D.I.V.O.R.C.E

Any more that I shouldn't play?

Is this a 'humourous' thread', or genuine?

I don't think anyone would take offence to your regular disco tracks, providing the lyrics aren't blatantly obvious ('It's A Man's World' etc)

beat it..... sorry sorry sorry
That actually referred to neither party wanting to back down, not actually 'beating up' :)

The tracks you mention have obvious inappropriate track names but would you have played any of the above at a normal gig anyway ?

Don't go analyzing every track you are going to play out either.

Back in the days, we had a song that contained the word "dead" . We changed the lyrics in this song at a charity gig we did for someone who was terminally ill with cancer as we thought it was not appropriate.

We were then told that we should have left the lyrics as they were, as it wouldn’t of bothered them

Yes, it is a genuine booking and I started thinking after taking it that I should be a little careful about my choice of music. You don't always think about lyrics during a party or any ordinary gig.

The women might be at a vulnerable stage in their lives, having had bad experiences which take a while to pass. If you had been beaten up for just talking to a man would you appreciate me happily playing Jealous Guy or Hit Me, Baby, One More Time?

The purpose behind the function is to rehabilitate them into society as functioning members. I don't need to stop that happening by reminding them of the past.

Why don't you ask the client about the songs that she would like to be played and the ones that she doesn't want playing then you have her opinion and maybe even her guests.

BeerFunk
18-10-2007, 07:27 PM
So some of these women will actually be there? By the sounds of it, I thought it was a charity night to raise money for these women.

Anyway, to be quite honest, how is wrapping them in cotton wool going to help them in the long run? As I said, so long as it isn't blatantly obvious lyrics (and yes, 'Hit me baby one more time' and 'Jealous Guy' fall into that category), then I would have it would be OK.

I reckon if you think about each track before you play it on the night, you will be fine :)

robbiedj
18-10-2007, 07:34 PM
It's not a night, it's a drop-in daytime event to help them meet prospective empolyers, trainers etc, so they can get back on their feet in the real world.

It will be a mix of background music and entertainment and the organisers were very vague about what they want.

I just want to get other people to make suggestions in case I have forgotten some blatently obvious track and play it without thinking. :omg:

Take it from me....you can play what you like......most people see it as just a song...not a personal message.....thery'd probably be more offended to find out you'd svoided such tracks

Im afraid getting PC about this thread is only inflaming the whole point as there are many occasions where a tune could be deemed as not apt to be played

In general Just ASK your clients whom booked you or play nowt but shopping centre music, They booked a disco did they not play disco music

Shakermaker Promotions

I think the best thing you can do if it is bothering you that much is to arrange a meet up with the person that booked you and air your concerns. Do it in a humourous way or something but make it known that you aren't out to offend anyone and you will also get a feeling of what the night will be like if you ask them if they have any specific requests.
I understand where you are coming from and I would think that I would be the same if I am honest but at the end of the day, it is just music and they will want a good time. You may also find that they may even make a joke of songs like the Dolly Parton one...who knows?

I think sometimes that we (well some of us) look into things and expect the worse. I must admit that on a number of occasions I have spoken to people on the phone and they have booked me and I have turned round and mentioned to the missus something along the lines of... "Well, not sure if that will be much fun.." simply because of the way that they have been on the phone and sometimes even after I have seen them but then when it comes to the function itself, it's been fine.
That also applies vice versa too.

I suggest you re-read Robbie's first post ( & #13) again because obviously your memory is playing tricks on you. This thread is not about offensive lyrics.

Quite frankly I think the attitude you displayed in your last post is extremely childish. If you did the above at one of our gigs you would be lucky if you got paid for it. It's not big & it's not clever. How old are you 14? Actually we have some members of that age group that display a more mature attitude than you seem to in most of your posts.

Although I aint a moderator or in charge of this site most people do argue with me over many things especially theri points of view.

All I can say is I see corbars point of view as well as yours DJ jaym neither of you are wrong or right but the thread is getting off track, this thread was over a specific problem namely playing the wrong kind of music at a womans refuse disco a touchy subject with all types of problems that could get bought up over a few tasteless songs hense upsetting the clients.

I play music as it was intended to be heard, if that means it has expletives in so be it thats the way of the times, but if your asking me to play offensive music to a crowd that could upset clients thats different. ie; prodigy - smack my bitch up. would be seen offensive to people from a womans refuse and there are may simular songs.

But it comes down to the basics ask the CLIENT what they want to here?????? They are after all paying you the hirer

You are promoting bad pratice by posting what you do, because it is bad practice.

If these other people do it too, then they are also promoting bad practise and things like this give us a bad name as an industry, and people like you aren't helping.

This site was set up to promote good practise. Have you not seen radioedit?

People go to a disco and listen to some idiot playing inappropriate music that is way too loud and think that all DJs are the same and therefore won't want to be paying much money for idiots like that.

Have a disco

There will always be people that see you bad practicing in there eyes when you could be doing a great job????

you would not be blasting out your music at a 60th birthday but would at an 18th... same as you would not play songs with expletives to a wedding party??? Its swings and roundabouts. There is no perfect way to do a disco or a bad way. But just getting things right with your client or hirer in the first place certainly helps.

I do admit as I have been a club DJ I do like playing a few unheard up and coming tracks in a night even at a oldies do for the youngsters out there, during the warm up or heat of the night sections. I use it as a testing ground and it individualizes my night as well, by not being stuck in a rut like most party DJ's get into.

To clarify few points,

A: The tracks i play are at 18th / 21st, With the permission of the client,

B: Hence if it upsets someone this at the clients onus

C: If someone is making gestures or seems unhappy and everyone else is happy full floor, Having a laugh etc, Then the volume will be increased why not ?

D: I have had about 8 refferals from doing 18th's this way, Why because they say im cool and play the tracks they want to hear, Including one time at an 18th a lad wanted some dirty grinding tunes, Fine he went and got the cd's i played em, They loved it few looks of disgust from the parents, But wait for it 2 bookings one from the parents of the girl for there own function ! and another 18th.

What im saying is if you havent tried it dont nock it, Works for me maybe not work for you, But thats my personality someone as im not afraid to take the **** abck at soemone over the mic, IF they do to me etc, But it works for me, Same as always said each to their own you find thigns what work and don't. But im not gona change my ways because people dont approve on this forum,

And FYI, In every other function radio edits are used unless agreed beforehand with client,

I must be an educator of sounds then as I get many people dancing early on because of my style of DJing

Fair play to this man, He has his own style and it works for him, What we all have there is no rite or wrong, and who are others to say what is good and bad practice

One mans merangue pie is anothers cusard pie which clowns use

But do do not carry weapons to a disco

ONly way to improve the industry as a whole. Is to force all disco's should be made to register under a proffessional bodies label like gas or heating engineers do with corgi. But as ever everything is about volentry codes and everyone to play the same kind of music at every event. Sorry one mans standards are another mans loop holes to the industry. It aint gonna happen. With 15 disco's in Haverhill only 1 I know apart from mine has PLI this is without the PAT issue coming into play.

So expecting us few to change a whole countrys point of view about a disco is about as pointless as me trying to ressurect DODO's, good or bad practice it will never fully happen until someone finally stamps on it once and for all. No matter how much we try there will always be a rogue element

I apologise MODS this has gone of track back to the issue at hand please

various rnb tracks with word ****** in - Do you lot not play when theres a black person in the room ?

Loosen up realy,

I have to cherry-pick, as you put it. It's a delicate situation and I happen to value the fact that more than one local council feels it can rely on me to provide music for their functions, involving children, mixed ethnic audiences etc, without causing offence to any and involving everybody in the event.

(and yes, 'Hit me baby one more time' and 'Jealous Guy' fall into that category), :)

I understand that in America "Hit me" (in the Britanny context) simply means have sex with me, so it's the girl coming on to the boy.
So the English version would be "Shag me baby one more time":D
Just being pedantic really, but how many people would know that "hit me" in America doesn't mean "belt me one over the nogin"??

:agree:
The topics hasn't moved too far OT (apart from the weapons bit:eek: ), because explicit lyrics are inappropriate in many circumstances, in the same way subject matter can be for the first post.

I work in a school and consequently do some of the discos, I would expect to be repremanded for playing explicit lyrics to under18's.
Personally, I feel the music industry is responsible for some of the rot in today's society by considering explicit lyrics to be totally acceptable, then pushing them out to the public.
They don't often make clean versions available, it's only down to the shear power of radio that they get clean mixes.

I don't understand why music isn't covered under the Obscene Publications Act.

If you printed out the lyrics and stuck 'em on the wall, you'd be commiting an offence. If you read out the lyrics on the mic, you'd be commiting an offence, but sing them????

A few years back i used to do a regular youth club gig and it was the time when those Eamon and Frankie tracks came out with all the bad language. Everyone was crazed with them, even had 13 year old girls coming up and asking "Can you play F*** you right back please ?" When i refused, i had the lady running the club come and tell me its ok to play it as they all hear that stuff on MTV anyway. So while we try and protect people from this kind of language, they hear it on the tv anyway. MTV has a lot to answer for and even the parents for letting there kids watch it.

The local version of Bloodhound Gang 'Fire! Water! Burn!' had hilarious sounds over the swearing rather than the usual bleep or reversed audio snippet... the songs was actually far funnier with the donkey noises and such.

Also a local radio station played Adam Sandler 'Piece of :Censored: Car' and used different car noises as bleeps... much, MUCH funnier than the original.
