Are the cheaper lasers any good,ie Kam dmx30 with controller for £179
Or the equinox 50 at £199.9no controller just sound to light).

Does it have to be very dark to get the best out of the laser effects,Also is it useless without smoke?????????????????????????????

The Purelight non-DMX range are VERY good for their price (£100-£130) and I also have a GVG double DMX that I chanced from eBay which is also excellent. My only experience with the KAM ones is from a colleague whose lasted about 3 months before it started 'sticking' and being a general pain in the butt.

They're not completely useless without smoke but they are 100x better with it.

The Kam ones I find aren't very good at all to be honest, no where near as bright as other within the same price fields.
One I would suggest for the same price is a Laser UK one - DJ Burst is the model. This is very very bright, looks much brighter than the stated 50MW, has over 100 patterns and is fully DMX'able. Tony was very impressed with the Bursts little brother, the DJ Spark for its brightness and thats only 30MW (but not DMX).
I use the DJ Colour and its brilliant, there's a video of it in the Gallery.

I have a couple of the Purelight lasers and they are great. They still look good without haze but I would advise using them with some haze if you are allowed to as it really does make it look so much better.

Surely lasers without smoke or haze are a waste of time? I presume you'd just get a couple of squiggles on the wall? :confused:

i was going to say what about a smoking enviroment but there is a ban in place.

i agree with darren. i have a small 5mw laser and it looks n@ff but when my old man blows smoke over the laser beam it looks so much better even though its just a few 2d pattens on the wall.

Lasers are great, like daz and KMA have said they don't look good without smoke which is so true. I have a S.I.K 4 head laser which can do some pretty funky stuff when you dmx it onto the pc... can have it creating images if it's done right

A place I DJ'd at last night had a laser in there. It was pretty good actually and they weren't allowing smoke or haze but there were some really good patterns there. I tried to see what make it was but it didn't have a name on it, all it said was 'professional laser effect' so I will have to describe it.

It looked like a barrel or tube, not that big really maybe a foot long?
I also noticed when I got there that the DJ before me (who does saturday nights - this is a new thursday Indie night residency I have), had left his Mackie actives and bass bin there along with some pretty expensive looking Martin scanners - Nutter!

the best laser i have seen at the moment is the 16 colour one has red green blue yellow and even white saw it at plasa but it was 800 pounds
i got a nice duel 100mw green laser very nice

I just can't imagine how you would actually see a white laser? :confused:

You don't need specific training as such, but you do have to stay within H&S guidelines, otherwise your PLI will be invalid and you're wide open for prosecution / being sued.
Have a search of the H&S website for the guidelines on using lasers.
It's not scary stuff, just common sense really!
Lasers use is similar to pyrotechnic use, any one competent can use them as long as they do it safely.

The danger is damaging peoples sight / blinding. All of the above mentioned lasers have the potential to do serious damage if not used safely.

Vision begins when light rays are reflected off an object and enter the eyes through the cornea, the transparent outer covering of the eye. The cornea bends or refracts the rays that pass through a round hole called the pupil. The iris, or colored portion of the eye that surrounds the pupil, opens and closes (making the pupil bigger or smaller) to regulate the amount of light passing through. The light rays then pass through the lens, which actually changes shape so it can further bend the rays and focus them on the retina at the back of the eye. The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that contains millions of tiny light-sensing nerve cells called rods and cones, which are named for their distinct shapes. Cones are concentrated in the center of the retina, in an area called the macula. In bright light conditions, cones provide clear, sharp central vision and detect colors and fine details. Rods are located outside the macula and extend all the way to the outer edge of the retina. They provide peripheral or side vision. Rods also allow the eyes to detect motion and help us see in dim light and at night. These cells in the retina convert the light into electrical impulses. The optic nerve sends these impulses to the brain where an image is produced.

It's all in the guidelines somewhere. Unless you're going to be using ~£10K's worth of high power lasers, it won't be an issue.
Although I have to admit we did 'push' the boundries somewhat back in the raving days:eek:

The HSE did come-a-calling at a couple of Hotel gigs (discos) where we had a laser in use, but once satisfied we were safe they were happy and went away.

You can see the 2W argon we used in the video of N-Trance's "Mind of the Machine" which was shot in an old air raid shelter. The laser was actually destroyed at the end of that video shoot - they dropped it down the concrete steps!!!!

I have to say though, at that price tag (£350ish), my purelights are just as good.
