Moving from vinyl to CD, a bit of a shock.

I recently started DJing again after 18 years out and what a shock to have to use CD's instead of vinyl.
I got used to just banging on singles all the time with the odd LP.
All my CD's are albums so it means a lot of swapping around to mix up the tracks.

I was thinking of ripping the CD's and mixing them up onto new CD's.
Either that or buy a laptop and create playlists.

There are legal issues there (as coverev in another thread today) it is illegal to use copied CDs while DJing.

Hi Nigel. I'm new here too, and haven't yet introduced myself... but I wanted to comment on your topic.

I also used to DJ a bit in the good old / bad old days of vinyl, and I have come back after a long break.

I bought a Numark CD Mix 1 which is the dog's danglies compared to the old rubbish I used to use... and even possible to lift up with one arm! Yet all the new DJs are calling it "bedroom kit"... so goodness knows what the top notch kit is like these days.

I've got a box of 150 CDs which I struggle to lift... many are double CDs, and most tracks are duplicated. I don't look for a particular disc like I used to on vinyl... I pull out half a dozed CDs of the genre I am looking for, then choose tracks that catch my eye.

If I get a request, I can connect an iPod which has every CD burnt to it... listed alphabetically... if I need to find a particular track... but I like the danger of choosing tracks "on the fly"... I often end up playing a track I haven't played for a while and think "I forgot how good that was"...

I certainly wouldn't go back to vinyl.
