cd's jumping

Hi everyone. Did my first party this weekend. Its was just a familly event in a marquee with a wooden floor. I was having a few problems with the cd's jumping. It was only when the dancefloor was really busy so as the wooden floor is pretty springy I figured maybe that was why...??? Does anyone have any ideas or solutions??

Simply a bouncy floor. CD players are still a narrow beam laser on a spring attachment a little to much movement and it will jump. This is less noticable on cd players with anti skip technology but if the floor is very bad even there will suffer.
They normally have a 50second buffer of read ahead to allow for skips but if you have people being very bouncy on the dancefloor for longer than this the buffer will remain empty due to skips and run out causing skips.

This is a very common fault that has been around for decades first on vinyl and then on cd's. Only now we have gone to solid state like digital controllers etc has this problem gone. Im sure people in 10 years time will still be using cd's saying it sound better than digital etc just like theydid with the switch over from vinyl to cd's. But if you want to stop skipping completely go digital.

Does your cd player have antishock ? If not this could be your problem.

Note for future marquee events.... set up on the matting or the grass... not the dancefloor ;)

I wasn't set up on the dance floor. The marquee was complately floored with wood and then carpet then a dancefloor ontop. No my decks are not anti shock. So if I get some then this should help the problem.

Oooh... posh! ;) Round here you get coir matting throughout and about 10 square feet of dancefloor plonked in the middle.

Definitely. Or for similar money these days you could get a laptop & go digital (decent entry-level playback software such as OTS Turntables is only about £30). Then keep your existing decks for backup only. Just a thought.

ok cool. You will have to excuse my ignorance but i already have a laptop but you didn't mention anything about needing to get mp3 decks??? I don't really know a lot about the digital stuff. All new to me

Yes absolutely I have the Numark CDN35 twin cd player which is a nice little unit to work with, although I hardly ever use them now as I work with OTSAV which is 100% better. ;)

ok wicked. If I wanted to go mp3 though am I going to have to get mp3 decks ontop of the mp3 software that you guys are recommending. Frankie.. I use dj kit a fair amount for my equipment so do you think they have and mp3 products that would be good for me. Thanks for your time

Max you dont really need MP3 decks unless you like the feel of playing music from one deck to the other in that case there are plenty of these units available on the net. If you use DJKit alot have alook at the cd/MP3player section.
The other option is if you want to be really lazy is to choose OTSAV which I use on my laptop and is a great piece of software, just make sure your laptop spec is good enogh for the system and that you have plenty of memory for the music.

I've got a solution. Buy a computer and use that. Mp3s don't jump. :D

I had a guy and his mate earlier in the year thought it was fun to and i quote them "Let's jump mate and make the djs cds jump come on it will be fun"

let them get a good audience together before i told them ...:D :D :D

Rolled up bar towels under each corner of your unit also work wonders.

A longer term trick is to get two tennis balls, cut them in half, paint them black and then put them (open side down) under each corner of your unit - trust me.

Used to get this a lot way back years ago. There's always one or two when they realize that they can make your cd or record jump then they are like a kid with a new toy. Hey I just thought of something. Wouldn't it be great if, every time they made your cd jump, you could make the dancefloor jump. In other words get your own back on them.

I use an anti shock dual cd player.

An option is to put foam beneath your cd player to iron out the bumps.
You will need a decent thickness.
If it doesnt get rid of all jumps it will get rid of most.

I used to use a lump of foam before I started using anti-shock players, but it was a decent thickness...probably a couple of inches.

It did the job very well.

i have never had this problem. the only i once had was scratched cd's that jumped.

what about some china cones. there metn for studio monitor speaker (was going to buy a set for mine) but i guess it could help.

I think you would have to bang them very hard indeed! I have never had one jump in my experience, and I too still have one in my motor!

Nor have I, but by their very nature - eg. a small disc inside a plastic case, it should be possible.

When i used to use cds with the cheaper cd players that didn't have anti shock i had a big thick piece of foam cut out and i used to sit my mixer case ontop of this.. Thats it jobs a good 1 and cheap too... Then finally got myself a denon cd player with anit shock :D
