i need help!

hi guys i need help in 2 things... ok im an 11 year old boy and about to spend £175 on disco equipment (inc lighting!). what should i get except for the amp?
and also i need a name for my disco place thats not copywrite. (by the way its not just me its me and another 11yr old mate!) and if you don't believe im 11 well believe that well please help me!:)

£175 is not a very big budget to be honest. Do you have anything at all yet?

Welcome to the forum young man,
as Solitaire Entertainments said before do you have any equipment at all to start you off?

Disco name wise you want to come up with something that is unique to you and that has a ring to the name.
By the way what sort of party's are you going to be playing, I assume you are just going to be doing the usual childrens discos and messing around in your bedroom with it?

by the way im actully going to be going to childrens partys i dont know and another thing im not going to mess around in my bedroom with it! iv got 2 300w speakers, uv light (lol),200w amplifier,£25 twirly light thing, disco cd player. and thats it i just need the reast of the kit :)

So i take it you have cd players, amps, mixer, or any other sound output device,

You are only wanting lighting then

As for music goes i would suggest buying a few of the latest now albums and also get some party cds with the likes of the cha cha slide on them, These should set you up nicely while you establish more music, equipment & your business


Disco names it has to be unique to you... you and your mate could have a sit down, brainstorm all the ideas and pick out the best 1 between you

thanks thats seriously helpfull and by the way i called it "twirly light thing" because it looks abit like a PAR can and it has 4 different coulers 2 bulbs and it spins. try and think of a name and i thought of "twirly light thing!"

you want to be having alook in maplins electronics for some budget stuff which will do you fine... and i thought you had a £175 budget

or you should keep checking ebay for lighting on there, some good stuff comes up on there

well if you are going to save up for moonflower lights then there is no need to buy any more lighting just get a fog machine and you will have an ample light show.

thats what i used to do and i still help out aswell. give the kids a change from running all night.


dont forget that most venues wont allow smoke machines. bare that in mind. instead of looking for scanners or anything expensive, look at the lights that give the most light output as this will help with with trying to fill a venue with light.

as djsteve said try maplins as these lights are very good for people starting to dj. hope this helps

To be honest with you its totally upto you and your friend to decide what equipment you need to buy for your disco... we on here can only advise you but if you don't provide the makes or models of the lights then we are unable to tell you what is good and what isn't

thanks guys i still need a couple of tips where to go to do a disco as i have done 1 disco for £10 before and they loved it! but now i need to know what type of places to search to do a £20 disco :)

I would get a bit of practice first and grap some free gigs to start with, like you say childrens discos and the youth club thing which has been mentioned. Even things like PLI (Public liability insurance - do a search, theres loads of posts on this on mdd) you wouldnt be able to have yourself at your age, you would need an adult and put it in their name as you need to be over 18 to have it in your name.

Well if you have other cd's then certainly use them. As a mobile dj you do tend to need a large varied mixture of tunes. The now cd's are ok but many tracks on those now are probably long gone. For childrens discos you will need alot of modern stuff like dance, house, RnB, girlie songs and also the cheesy stuff like dj casper, macarena etc. Maybe you should check out the Mastermix range and also dmc cd's.

As you are going to be predominantly playing to teenagers, having Now 62 as your most recent CD will not be current enough. Get 63,64,65,66,67.... and 68 in four weeks time when it's out!

Also it is worth you investing in the DMC box sets for your older "must have" party tracks - the DMC route is a great way to build a collection, if you PM me I can give you details of a DMC stockist who doesn't charge any P&P on deliveries and could probably work out a discount for you if you buy a few box sets to help get you started :)

or spend some of your money what you was going to spend on lights on them as you can't call your self a disco without any music can you

the best £30 you would ever spend. as rocketroadshow said you have to have a large selection of music. for example i have over 20,000 (bout 1/3them heavy metal) but i still get asked for stuff which i dont have. if you can afford maby set a weekly or monthly budget and use that for buying cd's but you must stick to it.

also one day you can be earning a tad more than £20 a disco.

I agree. Sort the music and sound system first. You can always get by with just a Soundlab vasto lighting effect to start with.

I've had speakers for around 15 years before that were OK. As long as they're looked after and are of a reasonable quality, they should be fine.

Jesus must cost him a fortune in drums skins then, they aint cheap for a set of skins as it is anyway.

yeah i have the garage heated with electric heating strips placed on the floor in all corners of the garage, also on the concrete floor is aload of laminate flooring underlay glued together to form another form of insulation.

I started Dj'in properly when i was 13, i started doing kids partys and youth clubs, built it up abit, then moved onto a few family partys where i had to play older styles of music, i then started going with other djs and working with them to get hints and tips and then just got the experience i needed to set up my business properly to the scale i have now

I'm all for encouraging young talent, and if I read this at 11 or 12, I would probably leave the forum.....

One of our most popular and now most requested DJs applied to join us when he was barely 16. There was nothing we could do for him at this age, as he was too young to sign a contract and would not be covered by our block PLI. However instead of encouraging him to save up and buy sweets, we stayed in touch, encouraged him to buy lights, sound equipment & music, and I PAT tested him on his 18th Birthday. He worked a few days later and has been out virtually every week ever since, and is now 22.

See where I'm coming from?

My son is a 13yr old DJ and he started out by having his own party night and invited all his friends.

They all had such a good time that they have been booking him ever since to do birthday parties for them.

He also asked his school if they would let him do a free disco for them which went down a storm with his friends and his teachers.

You will need a couple of CD's that have all the action songs on them like cha cha slide, YMCA and also make sure you have all the current chart songs that your friends are into.

Once your friends know you are a DJ they will be nagging their mums and dads to have you for their birthdays :)
