Do you mean dry ice or smoke machine? Either way, it's not smoke and so not affected by the smoking ban, although they could trigger certain types of smoke detector.

Smoking ban is only on smoking as in fags cigs and pipes. This is nothing to do with special effects or even log fires that dont use smokeless fuel.
Smoke machines , haze and dry ice are unaffected.

It's called a smoking ban because it is a ban on the activity known as smoking, not on 'smoke' as a noun.

I wasn't too clear in my original post. I was looking at one of those smoke machines with an ice cube bucket on the front which drop the temparature as the smoke passes through to give the effect of dry ice.

Would be quite a cool effect to have the machine mounted up high and have a waterfall type effect as the smoke drops down rather than blasting straight out and going everywhere.

Been looking at a Mr Kool machine, not much bigger than a fog machine, just a box on the front for the ice cubes. No hanging brackets though which is a bit of a problem.

I've got one of those which I don't need anymore. I've never used it up high though.

best ones I have seen are connected to a smoke machine which then the smoke goes through a cooler devices to lower the smoke temperature and they look fantastic hugging the floor, but they aint affected by the smoking ban although many places do refrain from there uses

I know of members of another forum who get on their :soapbox: when they hear "smoke machine" because it's NOT smoke, it's FOG!!
So to be pedantic, it's actually a fog machine, or you could call it a theatrical smoke machine, if it is to simulate smoke for theatre, although it's not exactly like smoke.

It's good to get in the habit of refering to fog machines, you're less likely to have the "my god we're all going to die and/or be put in prison if you even bring that thing near the building" brigade imediately lay down their pretend law that they no nothing about. <takes breath>

So, to sum up:
Something that you can see that goes everywhere - FOG
Something you can barely see that goes everywhere - HAZE
Something that you can see that hugs the floor - DRY ICE
Something that you can see that hangs near the floor - LOW FOG/CHILLED FOG

Thats quite right actually. Where us dj's know that fog and smoke are the same thing, the public are not as sure.

I have been getting dry ice and low fog mixed up aswell. Its in fact a low fog machine i was looking at and will now be buying in a few gigs time.

As i cater for alot of hotel work, they don't let you use a fog machine... some of the bigger rigs that i put out would look amazing with a fog machine, So i am thinking of getting a haze machine this way it is not in peoples faces as much and it gives off the desired effect of enhancing the lightshow.

Can anybody reccomend a good haze machine even tho it is abit off topic?

I use an antari hazer it was pretty cheap, and does the job.

I got a cheap one for 40squids from the Germans. It's the smallest one but ideal for just a little to enhance the lights. I recently used it in a typical church hall/community centre and it was just right, you could hardly see the haze but you could really see the lights/laser.

I wouldnt use a smoke machine in case it sets off an asthma attack.
I dont use strobes in case they set off fits.

If someone got hurt coz of my disco I could be in serious trouble.
I am insured but dont want to lose my no claims !

I'd love to know who started it and do something unpleasent to them:eek:

Theatrical smoke/fog is harmless, it cannot bring on asthma or induce coughing. When people cough when they see smoke, it is entirely psycological.
The only way fog could have in effect is if the person put their face right near the nozzle, or you put a HUGE amount out so you litterally couldn't see:cool:

I think it's the LeMaitre site that has COSHH sheets for their fluid which clearly state the effects (or lack of).
It could be useful to print them out so you can shove it under the noses of the aforementioned brigade (post #11):D :D

Many years ago smoke machines were nasty oil based things, but modern ones are water based, oil based is only used for bloody expensive hazers used by the TV industry mainly and are totally safe.

I have both a fogger & a hazer both from jem but don't use them very often and the hazers really temprimental in fact it's a right pain!

if yer ever bored:whistle: take a fogger in to yer garage / shed / other small room of choice and let rip BIG TIME...... apart from it being enough so you struggle to breath (lack of oxygen I guess), it's not half a strange experience. Something everyone should try at least once:D :D



oh.... and be prepared for the fire brigade to turn up when you come out, especially if the neighbours don't know your a weirdo with strange equipment:rolleyes: :D :D :D :eek:

Interesting comments about finding it hard to breath etc.

As someone who works in a theatre.. we normally users hazers.. but sometimes backstage if they were turned on too early.. and the house tabs are shut.. it gets to the point where you nearly can't see.. (which is always fun).. and we don't have any trouble breathing... apart from maybe some people who are not used to it being a bit short of breath.
The only case I can think of is where a fairly old (amateur) actress started to hyperventilate because of the haze.. but as was said above it was more physiological than anything else.
