just switches to digital so running my laptop into my mixer, when i listen through the headphones and turn up the volume it gets worse but if i turn up the volume from the laptop I hardly any interferance. whats the best way to get rid of this?? I have only listened via my headphones and not with my speakers plugged in but i am expecting the same will happen.

Try it with the laptop using the battery only, i.e. remove/unplug the power supply. If the noise has gone then you have a ground loop problem.
This can be sorted easily with the purchase of a ground loop isolator from the likes of Maplin, Halfords or CPC, typical cost between £5 and £20.

Ok great. do I need any other adaptors as not sure where it will be being plugged in?

If you buy an external sound card, you will need a GLI for each channel.

indeed a maya44 and 2 ground loop isolators .... totaly solved this problem for me ..

Alternative laptop PSU sorted it for me. Luckily I had a few kicking around so just tested with all of them. Not sure why the one that does work works if you know what I mean... no real difference between it and the next one. But it did. :p
