I've made a few enquiries for you & discovered that this track was on their 1976 album "Sign of the times"

I haven't been able to locate it on CD, but you can buy a vinyl copy of the album for about £7 or £8 through one of these links:

Actually, There was a bit more to it than that!

Firstly I searched for the track on ebay, then I looked for it on itunes, then I looked up the Rubettes on Wikipedia, then I looked on a top 40 site to see if the track was released as a single, then I googled the track name and artist - which gave me a site listing all their singles and albums, then I made a note of the album it was on, and finally I went back to ebay to do another search!

As I said, I made a few enquiries...and it was indeed quite a few!

me again I have had a request for this song as a 1st dance for a wedding in december the bride used to have it years ago but cant find it now so im hoping i can make her day by getting it and living up to my name as the dj with everything its loking like im going to have to buy the album on viynl

So do you not ask your customers for advance requests (ie a few of their 'must haves')? If you do and you haven't got it, do you just tell them that you haven't got it, or do you try and get it - as supersounds is trying to do?

Customer requests should always be located if possible. It is part of our T&Cs that we will try to obtain any that are sent on the requirement forms we send with the contract.

Especially for a 1st dance.

Why ruin a couples big day by not doing this.

I only do DJing as a hobby so dont need to make a fortune.

I certainly dont nick everyones bookings at knock down prices.
I pick and choose which gigs I want to do.
I probably average 2 bookings a month which is enough for me.

I had a gig last year where I told the bloke I played guitar as well so I did a spot on the guitar too.

I sometimes buy compilation albums or certain top groups if I think the ywill go down well.

As for weddings well I have the "wedding album" which covers most peoples tastes.

At the moment I dont do wedding gigs just parties.

And what do you mean by "same type"? Same genre? Same artist? Same BPM? All of the above?

I know numerous people that, for example, love Elton John 'Your Song' but hate, Hate, HATE 'Candle in the Wind'. You simply can't have a 'this'll do' attitude to people's requests, especially if they are particular special songs.

I regularly get play lists where people cross a particular artists as 'Do Not Play' who then request some of their songs, it turns out that they only like those two songs, and none of the others by that artist. An extreme case was where the bride and groom had Westlife for their first dance but I was forbidden from playing anything else by them the whole night (and that included playing the first dance again as the last dance, which I regularly do). Sure, if you're not doing weddings, then people are a little more lenient, but you still have to be careful...

Here's an extreme example...

A girl I used to date loved Guns n Roses and most other bands of that type and especially from around that time (late 80s/early 90s) but she could not listen to 'Sweet Child o' Mine' because it was playing at a party when she was raped.

I would need 6 articulated lorries to jsut carry the CD's.

I can promise you I never get any complaints, except when I finish and they want me to continue. I have been "bribed" a few times to carry on.
Finished at 6am once as the money just kept on coming.

no you can't have every single song ever written by everyone but .... you can try to make sure that you have peoples special songs for them its service and going the extra mile for people.

for example I got asked to do a northern soul night earlier in the year ... a genre which i admitedly am relatively inexperienced at

i told the client that id never done one and he asked me if i could get the resourses together to have a go at it .

I took it on did my research on this forum and some other places and basically used all of the money i was getting paid for the night to get hold of legal downloads and albums probably all told over £200 ...

I saw this as a good investment as with the help of those on here and the client i did a successfull night and was therefore able to add another string to my bow as a dj.

Of course not, there is a big difference between having everything on the off-chance that it gets requested, and making sure that those few songs that are requested ahead of time are in your possession.

If I get a request for a song that I doubt I'll ever be asked for again I ask the client to proivide it for me, anmd then only if they've asked for a number of songs that I AM purchasing and/or it's not on iTunes.

For the record I take 15-20,000 songs (all on CD) with me to gigs - no lorry, just a van.

If a DJ doesn't ask for a list of requests in advance, and as a result might not have some of the songs you want on the night - including the first dance, I don't think you can complain if you've only paid £75.

If I was charging £75 instead of £300, there's no way I'd offer the high level of service which I currently do.

You get what you pay for.

Not necessarily... your expenses for 4-5 gigs are going to be higher than one £250 gig.. so the actual profit you make may be less.

Of the two options, I'd rather go out once a month for £250 than 4 or 5 times for £75-£80...even though I WOULD be earning a bit less overall.

As Danno said, the expenses for 4-5 gigs would be higher than for just 1, so the nett income would probably be about the same anyway.

Why go out to work for 4 or 5 nights when you can earn the same money from ONE gig?
