I have the 'residency' for one of our local yacht clubs which involves covering their social events about 5 or 6 per year plus any private functions that hire the clubhouse. We're just coming to the end of the first full year I've been there and last night was the "laying up" evening with sausage & mash :confused:
Anyway, this crowd have been most unpredictable all year - we've had really good nights with everyone up for a party and not-so-good nights with most folks just wanting to chat, have a couple of beers, and leave early because they're out at 5am on the water.
I was warned that last night would be "a bit hit and miss". Instructions were to play 70s unless anyone placed a request for anything different in which case I could weave them in, but I was to return to 70s when the requests went dry.
So started playing background tunes around 7:30 expecting an 8:00 kickoff. Except that come 8:00 there were 4 old men sipping their halves of bitter and glaring at me for daring to playing music :o By 8:30 there were a few more folks around so I start trying to get toes tapping but was asked to play some "lighter" stuff "because we'd like to talk". OK fair enough.
At 8:55 about 40 people arrived just in time for the food at 9:00. I carried on playing background until about 9:30 when the majority had finished, then stuck on a couple of lights, upped the volume a little, and went for it.
10:30 and there's 2 women left -wife and a friend of the organiser, plus the organiser behind the bar. As I'm booked to midnight I ask for instructions and am told to play to the two women; if they weren't dancing by 11:00 I could wrap up. So I ask them for requests... and was asked for Christmas songs :bang: which I played reluctantly and which they got up and danced to. And they carried on dancing until midnight!!!! They kept shouting out which song they wanted next, and I threw in a few of my own that I thought were complimentary, and we had a private disco for the best part of 90 minutes.
Much harder work than any wedding I can tell you....
