Mackie SRM450's overheating

I have a pair of Mackie SRM450's and was doing a disco the other night and the heat sinks on the back were really hot. The speakers were on half power but I was pushing quite a bit of bass through which I know will make them work "harder"

I know Mackies have a thermal cut off but I was considering buying some small clip mounted fans to cool them - anyone else had a problem with overheating and if so, what was the solution.

i take it that thay are passive cooling??? imo i dont think a small clip on fans will be enough.

maby buy a mackie sub then you wont need to push them so hard??? just an idea

I already have a mackie sub SWA1501 but the venue doesn't really warrant it. Plus the venue only pays £80 so can't be a**ed to take it down!

How old are they? I thought it was only the older ones that had this problem.

The 450's are around 6 years old I guess but still sound fantastic (although a bit "rashed" from years of band use)

I'm not sure what the cut off point for the old design was, but that may be it. I've seen bands & singers use clip on fans on the back of them before. Seems to work.

Never had the problem and neither has anyone else working for me (and we all use them)

I wouldn't say they are 'crappy', they don't sound too bad - for a 9 year old speaker design :sofa:

6 years old time for an upgrade i think my jbls are 4 years old and i am gonna upgrade rcf 310a

Could upgrade the heatsinks. This would give greater surface area for heat to dissapate. There a fan that will clip on to these heatsinks I heard some other DJ's had them installed. A PC type fan would have high airflow and could probably be installed with little problems.

You shouldnt have to be be tampering with original design specs from professional Companies.

THEY CHARGE ENOUGH TO BUY THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have to do this either your speakers arent adequate for the job or theres a design fault.

Just buy some suitable speakers --or its all gonna end in tears!

So you would upgrade your speakers every 6 years even when they sound as good as the day I bought them. I'd be constantly skint as these speakers cost me £1200 when new. I won't be getting rid of these for a good few years yet!

I would have thought that Mackie SRM450's are more than adequate for a pub disco. Anyway, the fact is, they've always got really hot but never yet has the thermal light come on and they've never cut out. I just wanna be on the safe side, I may need to re-employ my SWA1501 then, that should take care of the bass.

But why should you have to do this?

this is the reason I put my brother of the mackies (he has an 8 member soul band called the soul traders)
surly if the cabs are overheating during normal use there's still a problem & something mackie should have sorted before they released them to the public
the only thing you can do in a case like this is to turn it down because sooner of later the fans are going to run out of steam too!:(

I gotta be honist I'm not a love of active speakers, but I must admit I was impressed when a band bought a pair of mackies (with sub) into my pub the sound was really good for the size of the system, until it cut out because it got to hot, wasn't so impressed then! :mad:

Glad I use the passives myself. But still if your speakers are fine after 6 years I see no point in replaceing them. My dad had a pair of laney (think i spelt that wrong not sure how its spelt) he used them for 15 years with no problems. Only sold them last year as he wanted to go for lighter cabs.
