How many lights?

Leading on from a few things that have been said recently, how many lights do you use on your rig as 'standard'?

Obviously, everyone may use more than the standard for bigger gigs and when a client wants a particlarly OTT lighting rig, etc.

Depending on the size of event/requirements/which lights are being used, our lot are all sent out with either 3 (very occasionally) 4 or 5 (most usually) effects and 2 lights for colour wash.

What's yours?

My standard rig...

1 Prolight DJ Stand with the overhead bar

4 Abstract lights
2 of them being XP twisters
2 of them being XP Barrels.

Never had a problem lighting wise and looks good.

I really need to cut down but I use 8 lights. Three point to the ceiling. Three point at the floor and two scanners that fill in the bit in the middle.

The lighting is use is sufficent for most jobs i do.. twisters on the dancefloor and the barrles cover the dancefloor and a few other parts of the room without getting in peoples faces!

2x martin robocolor 2 (used to illuminate my mirrorball)
2x 4ft caged uv lights.

2 x ACME Tomahawks
1 x ACME Patriot

Bigger stuff for the 'show' if needed as well as other effects:
2 x Pilot 250 Moving Heads (15 chn)
2 x 4 chn scanners

Backlight / floor / wall etc wash:
1 x i Colour 4 (for the back in bigger venues) ~ smaller i use just led pars for the back depending how else theyre used etc
4 x LED Pars.. either backwall or on the rig

Other:
4ft UV Bar
Small strobe
Small lazer (upgrading soon)

Although I am buying in 6 more LED par cans to start a room uplighting service.

Sounds a lot in some respects I guess but it isn't just shoved up anywhere.. it is though out and put where needed and used when needed etc.. also for the general 'plug and plays' I am getting DMX switch packs so they can also be on/off'd by dmx.

My all new standard rig goes out for the first time next weekend. I'm just finishng the wireing today. The rig's been setup in the kitchen all week and her in doors is going ape so gotta have it finished today!!!

It's nothing special but looks tidy and gives a nice effect.

Effects lighting:
4x Acme Puma
1x Acme Wildtech Fiesta (for occasions gobo projection)

Wash lighting:
2x Acme iColour 4

Will get some photo's of the rig in action next weekend.

I offer a selection and what I take out depends on the package chosen and the event type. Kids parties for example = lasers & scanners and manic lighting, silver weddings = mirrorball, spots, moons etc. you know the score.

The 'pool' currently consists of:
2 x Purelight green laser StL
1 x Purelight red laser StL
1 x GVG dual red laser DMX
4 x Dynamo 100W DMX
2 x Dynaroll 2x250W DMX
2 x NJD Datamoon 250W DMX
4 x Stairville MV250H moving heads 250W DMX
2 x Acme Stormbird 250W StL
Pair of loopy tubes
Multi-coloured LED moving sign
30cm & 40cm mirrorballs
2 x PAR36's with assorted gels for the mirrorballs (when not using heads, ie small venues)
4 x 4-way pinspot banks for retro nites with chaser (each bank its own colour)

I also classify my R4-based video system as 'lighting' as it's mainly used for abstract graphics / shadowdancers / theming, so there's a pair of 20" widescreen TFTs and/or two video projectors with 84" rear/front projection screens and stands.

So to answer the question, VV Junior has about 8 lights, Premier 12, Platinum anywhere between 4 and all of them depending on what the customer wants.

a small roadshow with 4 light boxes and UV with 7 light/special effects and laser system

My standard lighting setup since I cut back on the amount of gear I take is...

4 moving heads
2 moonflowers or 2 mushrooms or 2 iColours.

Total: 6 lighting effects. I've managed to reduce my setup time from over an hour to around 20 minutes.

My standard lighting rig for the average sized room is......

2 x Abstract Gladiators
2 x Small Moonflower to use at the start of the evening
2 x LED Pars
2 x Lightscreens
UV Strip

For bigger venues (but still depending on size).........

A Purelight Green laser, 60cm Mirror ball, Par 36's, Intimidator scanner, Galactic moon and some Par 56 may come out.

Not in a standard rig , only use them with large rig.

The standard rig consists of:

2 x EVL Spins
2 x Acme Leo's
2 x Par cans for a bit of back lighting.

If the place is big enough I like to take out the Mood bars 'cos I think they're great! Also got laser, another 2 Leo's and another EVL Spin if need be.

2x Spyro 250s - Sometimes StL, sometimes DMX depending on time and space.

Yes, that's all - they're wide and deep throw, they're bright, and they're not too manic - often times I just point them at the ceiling (well, about 10 degrees up from horizontal as that's all the bracket will allow) so only the tallest punters get an eyeful, if at all.

Sometimes I'll swap in or add both SpinMaster IIIs, mainly for younger crowds and/or dancier play lists.

I was up on a high stage on Saturday and the client had a fairly-light curtain (about two dozen 15' single strands of fairylights set 2"-3" apart) behind me so I set-up my T-Bar just as high as it would go behind the curtain pointing down to the dancefloor - it looked awesome! Covered the dancefloor and spilled out to most of the room, too.
