Weather causes eggy face

Unpacked the van for last Saturday's gig, hung all the lights, did a check and one of my purelight lasers was very dim.

Cleaned it, no difference. Swapped it for another and it was fine.

Put "faulty" unit aside - in the passenger footwell of the van - where it stayed until this morning when I remembered I needed to look at it.

Brought indoors, same fault. Tried a couple of others to make sure I wasn't imagining things and I wasn't.

Rang supplier as it's only a few months old, vented spleen at them and organised a replacement.

Went to find a box, came back and was confused about which laser is the "faulty" one. So powered them all up one by one (I say "all", I only have 3!) and still none the wiser :confused:

Thinking back it was cold and damp on Saturday and it was cold and damp this morning. The purelights aren't sealed, there's no lens cap over the mirrors and you guessed it, condensation on the laser lens. 10 minutes in the house and it was gone.

Just finished grovelling phone call to supplier.

Dont have a go at suppliers,without checking the basics first

Be more careful on the storage of disco gear. Had a similar problem with a cd player once. Had travelled for about 2 hours to a gig got there and one of my decks was playing up. As they were pretty expensive cdn-88's I decided to contact supplier next day. Got through gig on backups but of course when I got decks home they worked fine. It was simply moving them from cold to warm created a bit of condensation on the lens. After this happened I started taking out an isopropol lens cleaner. A quick clean and lens is fine.
Mind you after it happened once I was much more carefull to have decks nearer front on car to be nearer heat to stop it happeneing again,

I know what you mean about the prolight no lens cover problem though it is very annoying. Im pretty sure the lenses reduce some of the radiation as well not not sure on that from a legal point of view.

As an emergency measure, I have been known to scrounge a hairdryer, and carefully aim it into the open tray.:eek:

Yeh condensation is a big problem if you keep your gear in a van or such like for a period of time, a little tip buy some of those little bags that soak up moisture ,they some times come with new gear i put them in my flight cases that have sensitive gear.
