I got my new wheels for my winch and wheels stand this morning and I have to say they are a million times better the old ones.

New ones are metal, bigger and the brakes don't look like they are going to fall off very 2 minutes.

Do you keep the rig fully assembled in transport?

No, I couldn't fit it in.

The castors stay on though.

Are they that much of an improvement overall?

I must admit I can live with the brake issue on the old ones (I just take them off completely when in transit & put them on when it's in place), but if they're that much more robust .........

Never had a problem with the old wheels, took the brakes off from day one.

So your stand moved about then without any brakes on?

No, never budged an inch, not even on a sloped floor.

Yeah, and real good brakes they are too;)
Like i said, never had an issue since day one and never used them.
Bit like you taking the hadles off your moving heads really

So if someone fell over your deckstand, there would be nothing to stop it rolling away then?

Seems a bit silly to me, like leaving the handbrake off on your car, 'cos you've never had an accident before, or not using safety bonds 'cos none of your lights have fallen off your truss before.

Don't know what yours is like, but you would have a job moving mine.
But those little plastic things ( brakes i mean) hardley the same as a handbrake on a car.
Do you not put things on yours? Rolling away? I think not.
What are the handles for on the moving heads? Why take them off then? Same thing, not really needed.

The ultimax stand my mate and i use i haven't bothered putting the castors on... my approach is once its set up it aint moving.

It's not so bad if you are leaving the stand at a hotel and you can unload the gear off it and just wheel it into a storage room and thats it job done lol :D

Sorry, but what complete rubbish.

The brakes are there for a reason and they stop the stand from moving even if you lean against it. If you don't use yours then that's up to you.

Handles on moving heads are so that you can carry and handle them easier. I took mine off so that they'd fit in the new cases.

Not a great comparison or arguement really. Safety is safety.

Do you not use safety bonds on your lights? Do you not have PLI?

Not really needed is it Paul?

Now that is nonsence and you know it!
As i keep saying, regardless of why they are there, my stand does not, has not moved while having no ( plastic) brakes on it.
And handles to falicitate the safe carrying of an item is the same.
What if one slipped from your hands onto someones foot or one of your employees feet, they then find out you removed its handles? Would your PLI cover it? You seem to have a view that you can mod an item for your purposes and that's ok, but my mod is somehow like comparing it to a person with no PLI.
Both our items have been changed from original spec.
Whatever your view, i choose not to use these Plastic brakes.
We could talk modded "quick clamps".
Anyway, i will leave it at that because i have made my view on the matter and for such a well built stand all i can say is what a poor brake design, plastic, to secure and prevent a stand with a possible 100KG of weight on it! Brakes that fall off easy as they are secured in an awful way, bit like a toy i'd buy for my sons from Toys R us"!
Atleast the moving head handles are secure and could never fall off, unless you take them off.
Thankfully my car handbrake is a substantial piece of engineering, never falls off, and is fit for the purposes of preventing 1 tonne of metal from moving.
Thankfully the stand does not move without the brakes, otherwise Ultimax could find their design being recalled.
Anyone who says their brakes are a good design really are talking "rubbish"

If you've quite finished, would now be a good time to point out that I have my stand move when the brakes are on (granted not as much as it did the time when I forgot to)?

If anyone leans on your stand heavily enough it will move, brakes or no brakes (or for that matter wheels or no wheels)

Basic physics.

Upon further thought, if your stand does not move with the wheels attached then it might be an idea to send them back to Ultimax, as it sounds like they may be defective. Wheels are designed to move once force is applied (whether that force is provided along an axel from an engine, or somebody pushing whatever the wheel is attached to, a trolley / deck stand / whatever).

Could I ask why you have wheels fitted to your stand Paul?

Sorry Paul, but taking wheels off and having a stand that may move is not the same as taking handles off a moving head. Handles are there to make it easier to carry the item, not as a safety item. As it is, I take them out of the case and put them on the case. If one was dropped by one of my guys, it wouldn't be PLI that covered it, but employers liability and yes, I have asked, we are covered.

I'm not quite sure what you are on about with quick clamps? I have the newer ones with metal inserts, manufactured by Prolight.

I don't know why you are so defensive about this. Not using brakes is simply not a good idea. Why fight against it with 'examples' of what you think are dangerous?

I'm not fighting it. I don't use useless plastic brakes end of.
At the end of the day, the public have as much responsibility for their own safety as i do. Maybe i'll strap it to the wall next time to be on the safe side and surround myself with black and yellow tape just incase .
If only we could all be as safe as you Darren;)

Yes, wheeling it when it does not have 80KG of weight on it.

So you could just carry it in & assemble it in situe? Seems a bit pointless having the wheels in the first place if you aren't using the stand as a trolley.

I am, but i dont load it with all my gear at once, i tend to wheel a little at a time.
Why assemble it on site anyway when i have a trailer big enough to keep it assembled. At the end of the day i do things my way, you do things your way. Each to his own.
If i thought my stand moved while DJing i would secure it, but it doesn't.
I can't see what is so hard to accept. Just because i refuse to use useless brakes that don't work in the first place.

Thing is, they do work (when engaged properly).

I just can't see why you refuse to believe that your stand could possibly move when it's fully laden. If any deck stand is pushed hard enough it will move (even those without wheels).

I've had a 6ft Ultimax with 2 twin CD players, mixer, 2 matrix amps, & 2 flight cases full of CDs on the shelves & 2 jaguars, 2 iColors & 3 Kaleido sized moonflowers on the cross bar move, when somebody leaned on the uprights. What if some drunk punter comes bowling up to you & looses their balance (as drunks in a hurry are prone to do), just when they get to your kit? I'd like to see just the weight of your kit keep your unbraked wheels from moving.

Thames Valley Discos
08-11-2007, 09:35 PM
Well yes, if someone felt the need to Rugby tackle it i'm sure it would move, i don't refuse to believe my stand can move, i just state it never has.
But i'm sure my stand with no brakes is a little safer than moving heads placed on top of flight cases infront of my stand.
I threw those plastic brakes away on day one anyway as they kept falling off.
Any idiot can destroy my kit or injure themselves regardless what care i take.
Guess all your kit is 100% safe and risk free then Steve?
I guess those brakes would stop a drunk idiot charging my stand? Utter nonsense.
If i saw idiots like that i wouldn't be playing, i'd be packing up anyway.
Your constant picking gets a little boring Steve, it's kind of expected now

Any object that is not fixed to the ground in anyway will move. Depending on the force of the object pushing down on the ground and how much force is being put in to the object it will move IE the force given to the object is greater then the frictional force.

Your constant picking gets a little boring Steve, it's kind of expected nowNow everyone on here knows that I don't come running to Steve's defence all the time - I think I probably pull him up more than I do anyone else! But there's really no need for that Paul. Steve has his opinion, you have yours: debate is the bread and butter of forums. There is no need for ANYONE to make personal comments about another member, just because they have a differing viewpoint to your own.

My own personal opinion on the subject of debate here? Well, I think most of us on here do whatever we can to make our rigs as safe as reasonably practical. Are any 100% safe? No - because that is impossible, but is a stand safer with brakes or without brakes? IMO - with brakes - even if they aren't the best brakes in the world, they are better than none at all.

Firstly Paul, don't be so ridiculous! I didn't say anything about "rugby tackles" or "charging" your stand, just situations that happen. Punters will lean on your stand & punters will fall onto it (either through dancing to vigorously or maybe they've tripped on the edge of a mobile dancefloor, or whatever. It happens, punters will make contact with your stand whether you like it or not).

You say....
I threw those plastic brakes away on day one anyway as they kept falling off.Did you actually try to engage the brakes or was it a case of they fell off while you were moving the stand (they do this because at certain angles they come into contact with the bolts that attach the wheels to the stand & can literally be forced off) I have had wheels on my stand for over a year now, that is an absolute minimum of 120 gigs & I've never had any more movement (apart from the time I forgot to put the brakes on) than I did when I had no wheels at all. Therefore I can categorically state that they do work.

Secondly, I've noticed that whenever somebody criticises something you do, you get mega defensive & if it still looks like they are talking more sense than you, you resort to a diversionary tactic such as....
But I'm sure my stand with no brakes is a little safer than moving heads placed on top of flight cases in front of my stand. Why is this? Also, what do moving heads have to do with this topic??? The thread title is Ultimax wheels, not modification & placement of moving heads (a prime example of your change the topic & maybe people won't notice I've said something foolish tactic)

Guess all your kit is 100% safe and risk free then Steve? As close as is possible. All leads are taped down, speaker tripods are as far out of the way of the dancefloor as is possible (venue permitting), my lights all have safety wires / chains, & my wheels have the brakes engaged. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, there are other precautions taken. Obviously short of fitting your stand with outriggers (& even then it would probably move if hit hard enough) or bolting the thing to the floor at every venue you play at (can't see the venue being happy with that) any stand will move if enough force is exerted on it.

Accept that your stand with no brakes on it's wheels can & will move. Unless of course you have a 100% fool proof way of stopping anyone other than yourself coming into contact with it? :sarc:

Yes, I noticed the little dig too, but am no longer surprised by them. It's all good when people are looking for help and advice, but when they disagree, the digs start coming out.

For your information moving heads are made to go on the ground and they are very safe on the cases.

If you have any doubts about how good the new wheels are, then perhaps you might like to look at them Paul and compare them to the old ones.
