Yeah right, try £80-100k for a qualified bod, more for those with experience or specialisms, up to £250k if they reach the Bar :o

Yeah right, try £80-100k for a qualified bodActually, the average salary for a 1-2 year qualified (bearing in mind they have already done around 5 years training after uni before being qualified) is £32K - and that's in the North London area (more for Central London, obviously, but less in the suburbs),
more for those with experience or specialisms, up to £250k if they reach the Bar :oWhich a solicitor will never do - a Barrister is a different profession to that of a Solicitor.

..... and if anyone moans about DJs PLI, you should see the price of solicitors' professional indemnity insurance! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Its for a legal s106 agreement between me and the local council, it's a provision of a Planning application being granted in a nutshell.
I was just shocked at the fee they charge these days, and i was comparing it to what the average person earns in an hour.

No, if anyone is really interested, I actually went back to the law a couple of months ago (I haven't had a 'day job' for a few years, following my back injury, and have only been working for Corabar.) However, Steve is now here full-time, and I'm here part-time, and I also work part-time at a firm of solicitors called 'Lawson George' (or more correctly, trading as Lawson George as they recently changed status and name to LGS Solicitors Ltd) as their Property Manager - supervising their team of conveyancers.

And in reply to Angela's earlier comments, I only worked as part of a team researching, designing and developing practice management systems for 10 years until quite recently, including billing, payroll, partnership and pupillage management, diary etc. with most of the best-known Chambers in the land, so figure that I know a reasonable amount about rates ;) Also that about 25% of trainee barristers have background/previous lives as solicitors, conveyancers and paralegal roles such as arbitrators, clerks, investigators.

Also, I should imagine that the Chambers (or if you were dealing with solicitors - firms) were employing outside contractors to design practice managements systems, it is likely that they would be at the higher end of the market. There are thousands of sole practitioners and partnerships out there who have barely moved over to getting computers in the firm!!!!
Also that about 25% of trainee barristers have background/previous lives as solicitors, conveyancers and paralegal roles such as arbitrators, clerks, investigators.I have no idea about the percentages you have quoted - but it is a change of career, as opposed to a natural progression.
