Moving heads

Hello all! :)

Just wondering how many of you use moving heads, and more importantly, how/where you position them?

Behind you? On top of speakers? Attached to overhead trussing?

Keen to get a pair, but obviously you have to consider positioning when thinking about your set-up.

Any advice appreciated...

We often take out 4, usually hung from a 6 metre truss, looks good if you have a large stage and enough height. With limited space, I sometimes mount 1 on top of each PA stack.

My heads are the most versatile effect I use. I generally use them at posher gigs - too costly and take too long to set up for the cheaper end of the market. I normally have them DMX'd and used to light a mirrorball to begin with, then let them go sound-to-light master/slave mode when the music's in full flow.

As for positioning, they can go anywhere! More often than not they go on the floor either side of the rig, standing on their flightcases if safe to do so. Sometimes on top of speakers if I have a stack (not often) and occasionally flown or behind the rig for effect if I'm so inclined.

I use the Stairville/iMove variety and they are extremely impressive and well-built for the money.

Quite a few of our DJs use movers, the two popular ways of positioning are:

(1) hung from tri or quad trussing
(2) standing on top of their flightcases on stage

Personally the only thing I would place on top of speakers is... more speakers, as it is difficult to secure LX etc to cabs.

Sometimes I have seen movers floorstanding to the side of a dancefloor, however this heightens the risk of them getting damaged, and limits their effectiveness when the floor fills up.

What I usually do is use two safety steels, one on each side of the fixture looped through the handle of the Mac and the top handle on the Stasys 3. Works quite well.

I guessed that's what you meant Jamie ;)
After all, Stasys is a bit different, virtually impossible to knock over at 150kg+ per stack

It's just when DJs with "normal disco speakers" (for want of a better description) talk about putting LX on top of cabs, I get nervous, and visualise a head balanced on top of a 1x12 on a stick :eek:

I prefer effects which you can aim at the dancefloor. Surely that's where they're needed the most?

depends how you have set them up..
if you and running a light show that you have set up rather than doing 'sound to light' or an inbuilt show you should have no problems.. if you have set it up right.
I do like my movers to go around the room.. but quite a lot of the time they stay on / around the dance floor.. moving about.. usually with the prism in.. and it all looks rather good :)

Don't forget when you saw mine Rob, we were at a funny angle to the dance floor. When I'm straight on to the floor on the setting I have them on, they more or less stay on the dance floor.

I use two....can't mount them on my bar so tend to put them on the floor either side of the rig.....but am waiting for two purpose built shelves to be made to slot into either side of my table.....now that will look cool.
