Disco stand

Hi all
looking to buy a new moblie stand, we have been looking at
Giraffe G106 4ft Disco Stand & the PRO LIGHT 4ft Disco Stand.
both look ok but would like info on which to go for, any one got any good or bad points on these stands.:bang:

I'd already bought the prolight 4' stand plus a set of crossmembers and a lighting bar off the 6' stand for flexibility and was quite happy with them.

Until I saw an ultimax and realised that in terms of build quality they're about 3x better for about 50% more £££s.

As soon as the prolights wear out I'm switching.

i would say go for ultimax i desperately want one ...... have today realised that it costs £263 for 2 winch mechanisms though ????? more than my entire current stand cost altogether..

know a few people on here have had build quality issues with prolight stands but not heard anyone to my knowledge with a problem with giraffe.

My old basic Giraffe with light T bar goes out 6 times a year and has been fine---pretty strong with no problems--bought it second hand for £30

I've said it before & I'll say it again prolight worst, giraffe ok, Ultimax the best.

We have had all 3 & there is no contest in terms of build quality & stability (with or without wheels) the ultimax wins hands down.

We are replacing all our cheap immitations with the genuine article.

Ultimax all the way, they're not that much more expensive anyway.

I've used prolight stands and found them very poor. Plastic couplers - what a clever idea, not!

I now have an ultimax stand and it is the dogs. Fantastic build quality it is the strongest stand I have ever seen. Good customer service from ultimate as well. They really are very helpful people.

thats £290 quid difference which in my book equates to alot????

But we weren't talkjing about the winch stands Dave - just the basic ones.

Also, your price comparison isn't a good example. Firstly you are comparing a deck stand to a set of wind up stands and truss and secondly the Prolight stand you have used as an example is the cheapest one they make. They also have a much more expensive range of winch stands too.

indeed you are correct think the non winch based stands are around the same ish??? about £179 ish didnt know proloight did other stands ??

We have the giraffe 4' stand/light bar, and IMHO its pretty good. Haven't compared to ultimax. Price difference seems to be £80ish v. £140ish. I guess it depends how often you use it. We only do 2-3 gigs/month and the giraffe is certainly good enough for what we need.

I have the 4ft Giraffe, perfectly acceptable build quality, but as said by others, it could be better. If you only get the standard top bar, it is not strong enough! I have modified mine with a bit of spare bar from another stand. The upright poles could also benefit from being of a larger diameter. I am happy with mine, but I wouldn't buy another. I hate to say it, but as Steve and others recommended Ultimax is the answer. There is an Ultimax with a single top bar at not an awful lot more than Giraffe. It probably depends on whether you intend to use it as main rig, or second/backup.

I have to say i have tried the various stands on offer and found that in the end i designed my own which i had 25mm box steel welded together to make my frame 7 years ago and is still going strong, despite the abuse it takes on the road, i have the design if you need it and it costs about £175 to manufacture but it gets an annual strip down and repaint, and is strong enough to take the wieght of the chunkiest of dj`s if you need to stand on it to put your crossbar, lights prewired and permanently fitted on to it.

Just to put my thoughts in.
Does anyone remember a product called "Speedframe" made by, and still is, by Dexion.
It is a 25mm hollow steel section which is plastic coated, there are a number of heavy duty plastic joiners that can be used to make any shape you need, parts also include end caps, castors etc, if anyone is on a tight buget, it might be worth considering.

I own both the prolight and the giraffe and I have to say I prefer the prolight, simply for speed of setup.

The giraffe uses pins and bolts with wing nuts to assemble and sometimes needs a little persuasion to get it all to line up.

The prolight I've had a lot longer and to setup you simply drop the bars into the square holders and its done, takes half the time.

I know you've already made up your mind - just to say I have a prolight and although have only been using it a few months, seems ok. I will probably follow suit though and get an ultimax when it shows signs of wear & tear.

I've used the Prolight for 3 years now and still as good as new. Can't see the Giraffe one lasting as long

My last prolight one is still usable (about 3 years old), but only as shelving in my lock up really! I went through about 3 in a year, so about 3 years ago moved over to the Ultimax side, and never looked back!
