Which is why I buy most major purchases off line at a higher price from a local reputable dealer who is accountable --

Not that I was needing to buy a Denon :D

If the information given is correct, then it's valuable to anyone buying a Denon.

However, I'm sure there are still people who, even armed with that knowledge, would be happy to buy a unit without a serial number from ebay.

This is because they are more interested in saving money than being able to get all the latest firmware updates, which is fair enough.

After all, there are people with hard drive controllers who have never downloaded any of the updates, but have not had any problems with their units.

In a way, firmware updates for hard drive controllers are a bit of a luxury.

After all, most electrical items are being constantly improved, but once you've bought one, you're stuck with it...unless you sell it & buy the latest model.

With the Denon controller people have a choice. Either get a cheap unit but lose the ability for firmware updates, or pay more in the first place and be able to get all updates to improve the unit.

Many people will be quite happy with the first option.

More fool them then as there was one before it's release that you really need to get it to work properly with UK versions of Windows (as opposed to the American ones) in the first place.

Dont worry Rob, my Cortex is original--never had an update--deliberately--worked perfectly from day one.

Admittedly I havent got any of the update features like mixing etc--but hey ---Ive got a mixer anyway:D

Depends on your operational style I guess.
