Telephone Monitoring

Hi there.

I'v seen DJ's use corded telphones as a means to preview tracks. Is there any disco suppliers that sell these or do you have to specially make them yourself?

Seriously, I think the phone idea is something slightly different from what other DJ's use.

Is there any folks on here that still use a telephone as a means of PFL'ing a track?

I'm not quite sure why - everyone used to use them years ago and the sound quality is horrible and tinny.

I once used one of these at a dodgy old social club once when i was covering the job there... They are shocking as daz said sound quality is tinnny and like you have ripped the track at 34Kb/s

After all the time you will spend sorting them out why not just get a decent pair of headphones??

It's all about the 'image', I dont mind if they sound horrible because at the end of the day it's just a few seconds your previewing.

I suppose when you play the latest hits use headphones and when your playing the retro classics, stick an 80's style costume on and use the telephone :cool: :party2: :beerchug: :corabarsteve:

What about if you're mixing?

i have to say if i am cueing a track up and setting a cue point i want to be able to hear the track clearly... these aren't even loud enough to cue a track up in a disco enviroment.

And like daz says for mixing you a screwed!

It's not even a debate - in a pro environment it's a terrible idea. Best kept in the bedroom?

I used one years ago. Although the sound quality was very tinny, it was actually of benefit when I dj'd in very loud clubs, because the sound was so distinct from the handset you could hear them very well which actually made it easier for mixing. Yeah the sound was different but thats what made them work so well.

They had other benefits as well, when mixing they rested perfectly on your shoulder and when finished mixing you could just let them slip and they would stay on your shoulder.

They also made pretty good self defence tools. The blue BT ones with metal cords were best but tricky to obtain ;)

If you really want one then there is no substitute for making your own.

Get an old telephone, take the speaker out of it and refit one from a pair of headphones. This will give you better sound quality and overcome the resistance problems that you may get from the old phone speaker.

You could also take the microphone out of the phone and instal one from a modern mic. Once wired up you will have a really retro look.


Personally I have done this many years ago and wouldn't bother doing it again.

i really dont think there is an issue here- yes they are not as good as headphones, but people would obviously use them for the retro factor- you can hear enough of the track for it to be suitable unless you want to mix, but thats not the same kind of person who would want one.

if i could get one I would jump at the chance.

we're not saying that everyone has to bin their headphones and use one- just that some people might think they would add a retro touch to the experience.

i can think of some lighbox users who they would be ideal for........

I appreciate all your comments herefolks :) I don't personally mix songs together in the sense of beatmixing. I do like the idea of replacing an old phone with a headphone speaker.

Everyone has different tastes for sure, I dont see nothing wrong in the retro looking monitoring system. If you want to use normal headphones thats fine, it's your choice.
