Just wondered if you guys / n gals make enquiries about these before offering a quote?

Although enquiries for Barn Dancing instead of Disco should on the face of it be no trouble--just not sure thniking about some of the reports on here of problems with alcohol, fighting etc.

I have just received a request and im not really sure about it.

If its the parents organising it at home or in a hall and they will be there then im a bit more relaxed.

I DO KNOW SOME OF YOU REFUSE TO COVER THEM:eek:

thanks

Although I CAN competently deliver a set of music that appeals to that age group (17-23 ish), here's how I test the water...

I claim that I'm not that good with those types of music and that my sets are geared more towards mixed ages parties.

Experience tells me that those who say "that's just what we want but if you could throw in a bit of recent chart stuff too" = a great party with no trouble as indeed parents and family tend to be there. It tends to put off the more potentially troublesome folks who are looking for a rave.

On the night of course I'll give them exactly what they want - mixed ages 'til about 10:30/11:00 then an hour or so of full-on club action :D Everyone happy!

Crazy,

I personally don't touch 18th's with a barge pole.

This is partly because I don't have (or like) lots of the current music they want, and partly because there is a very high chance of trouble.

After nearly 25 years in the business, I really don't need the hassle!

I agree with Rob, I don't do them. Don't like the music or risk of hassle.

I've done one.....but it was hassle for little money :sofa: and not worth the agro for gear being smashed. (one of the first gig's i did)

Having said that i would consider them if the incentive is there.... and you can usually tell by the quote what client you will be getting.

I don't mean to be rude Crazy but i imagine the quote was right?? as i get the feeling that you are not a man to get out of bed for less...so to speak.:)

No quote yet.

As it happens I would be passing the Barn Dance gig on and Im very particular if possible to make sure whoever does the job doesnt end up in a nasty situation--as VV says--if its a "family affair" probably ok.

What worried me slightly was the enquiry was from the birthday person not the parents and it was ordered at Midnight--:(

Maybe just jumping to the wrong conclusion--ive asked the person who might do it to get a phone number and speak to these people--this is one of the disadvantages of email enquiries where they dont offer a phone number--although we actually do conduct business like that this is one enquiry we need to be careful on.

I'll quite happily do them, as I enjoy the music more, and get more time to mix :D
If it sounds like trouble, I will charge them an extra £60 and for that I'll supply an SIA'd roady, I'll be taking the course very shortly too, so I'll be able to remove the chavs too LoL

I still do them ocassionally.

They aren't all trouble and I don't think you should tar everyone with the same brush either.

I am not able to say they are all trouble....but would have to agree that you should not tar everyone with the same brush........the phone call can usually be the giveaway or the venue.....:)

Done a few 18th/21st Birthdays this year and they all have had family there, so been good nights.

What tends to happen is at the end of the Party is the Birthday Boy/Girl if still standing, will go off with bunch of friends to the nearest night club (not your worry then) and leave family to tidy up :Naughty: :D

If it's the Birthday Boy/Girl thats doing the booking and not the parents then the Alarm Bells maybe ringing.

Thats why im a bit concerned--will make no assumptions in advance though.

i do them ..... if they can afford me :D :D :D

i do say though i dont deal with the sorts of music that i associate personally with bad crowds

yes i have no naughty words rnb and modern chart etc if thats what they want but house and dnb i will happily pass on those gigs as firstly i wouldnt enjoy listening to 5 hours of that racket and that would probably show in my performance and secondly as said i associate that kind of music with cultures i personally dont want to be involved with.

As we all know, generalisations are usually a bad idea. Never more so than with 18th's, as I'm sure we all know venues which will not touch them for all the obvious reasons. Just recently I have had both ends of the scale, a party with only two "Adults" present, and a night of max volume chart, dance and hi energy music ( with no behaviour problems, BTW ), and another with many family members of all ages, and a night of unmitigated cheese and party all night long! At the risk of speaking too soon, and inviting disaster, I think the most helpful guide can be the ( type of ) venue. I do know that there are venues where I definitely wouldn't be happy with an 18th!

I agree, usually if its a scummy venue they won't pay my price anyway.. so this weeds out the bad bookings. I'm yet to have had any problems at an 18th, most of the ones I've done have been for two venues I know well and am recomended by, so know the staff and know they can sort out any problems there may be.
