A new start

Allo boys and girls!

as some of you may be aware I'm in the throughs of putting together a new bussiness!
the aim of the game is a to provide services aimed at the mobile Dj/sound opperator mainly woodwork i.e speaker cabs, rack sleves,deckstands,rack wiring,flight cases ect
I could do anything from build you a rack sleve for your amps (and wire it out) to building you own speaker design!
I already have tried & tested designs for speaker systems from a 1 x 8" mid/hi to a full blown active system

would you use a service like this & if so what else would you find useful as additions to the above

I would certainly think about using your services if you could incorporate metalwork into it too, but I'm not entirely keen on wood because of the weight/bulk. I suppose it depends what it is? Custom flightcases would be nice, as they normally cost an arm and a leg to buy.

I've been doing stuff for local Dj's & band's for many years now so thought I'd put it to use! the trouble is the shops charge so much
and we're all trying to cut our costs so I'm going to be working from home to start with then see what happens! :)

i totally agree. flight cases are so over priced these days. the cardboard boxes i have are starting to fall apart for the dj frame so to have a custom case for all the stands and frame work would be really good.

flight cases are so easy to make! the mark up on them is un-real I paid £375.00 for 2 x technics & 1 x 19" mixer case over 10 years ago! (five star cases) I could make the same for less than half that now! that shows you what the mark up is!
the whole idea is to give people what they want without paying through the nose for it!

Well, possibly welding or rivetting a sturdy frame, which would mean that the panels could be lighter plywood or something - as they don't have to take the load.

I can weld! (both gas & electric) and am very good with metal work!

but have you seen the current price of metal?
it's not cheap and compared to plywood I don't think there would be any gains in weight saving, plus timber tend's to absorb vibrations a little better which could be a major factor to those using turntables (there are some of us still about!)
taking into account you have to move stuff about (sometimes in a hurry) would you really want something heavy and complecated to put together? the deck stand I use takes about 3 mins to assemble/dis-asemble just using 2 x 6mm set screws! :)

The top is the biggest part it's 1500mm long 500mm wide
& about 400mm high (but only in parts)

the base which folds flat is 1103mm wide x 860mm high and when folded is less than 100mm thick and I can carry the whole lot x
excluding the shelf in one hit! and mine is made from mdf, ply would be lighter!

there could also be many diffirent styles i.e I've done one with bevel edged mirrors for someone looked wicked but boy was it heavy!
and of course the front panel could be sign written or how about day-glo with u.v lighting? the possabilities are endless and only limited by your imagination!

As you are good with metal and wood work, this might be a bit drastic but why not put dj'ing to a side and start a new buisness. build everything your self, copyright the designs. just an idea. if you say you can make the cases for half the price (and look the same with all the ally edges) then you have one customer already.

More or less what I'm doing, but still going to do the odd gig here and there just to keep my hand in!

theres not much point in copyrighting this type of stuff because if someone copys anything I do all they have to do is make a small change and the copyright is out the window!

what I'm more interested in doing is making stuff that people want rather than what they can get of the shelf "so to speak"
for instance the active system I'm working on at the moment has an 18" driver rather than a 15" for the bass and has a 1000watt powersoft amplifier in each cab
the suff avalable at the moment dosn't seem to run at this sort of power so a full system of mine will be rated at 4k in 4 cabs and still fits in the back of my chrysler!

sort of it's a grand voyarger! but remember I also have all my other stuff in it it too!
mixer/cd rack, 2 technics, 4mts truss, 4 roboscans, 2 x scimitars, 4 quadra flash units stands cd's records, hazer, deckstand and roadie/dj
and I still have plenty of room left! :p

ahh i see. well without going off topic i have to fit all my dj gear in my little 5 door corsa. but as a result cant take me new sub or rack box as these wont fit in there.

this also means i cant take my back up because there is no room in the car. it should be a laugh trying to fit in the smoke machine later on. :lol:

if only it was that easy. i spoke to out friend who is a mechanic and he said because the car has a small engine it would seem a bit pointless having on there. i struggle with all the gear in the car already. 40mph up hill on a 70mhp road, not good at all and dangerous

Sorry Steve no pics avalable at the moment as I'm still finalising stuff and nothing is going to be ready untill the new year!

Dj bids is already on my list as is a website which will have everything on it including fully finished cabs/racks/deck stands, and the same in bare timber for those who want to load and paint themsleves and a variety of other services as well.

If your car is going that slow it is almost certainly carrying too much weight. Dangerous. Tyres could blow, brakes overheat, etc etc.

Overloading leaves you open to serious prosecution and penalty points are not a good idea.
