I've just taken the plunge and started a google adwords campaign as a way of potentialy drumming up a bit of new business

has anyone ever tried it before? did you think it worked? did you think it didn't work?

i've set my advertising budget for the first month @ £30 just to see how things go, it's a bit confusing at the moment but i'm trying to get my head into it.

do you think it well help my site with the search engines by boosting it up the rankings a bit?

thanks:beer1:

ive done it ... you may find you get one or 2 calls from people trying to sell you things ..... and you pay for them to get your number .... great. also enquiries from the far reaches of scotland .. when you live in cornwall. :D :D :D

that's what was putting me off at first but then i found out that you can target localy

for instance you can tell google that you only want your ads to appear to customers within a 30 mile radius of where you live

we'll see how it goes anyway, did you notice any change in your search engine ranking?

I use it and it works reasonably well for me - even though the geographical targeting is a bit hit & miss - I think the smallest radius is 60 miles - and I live on a little island...

Hot tip - in your list of words, put the names of the more desirable wedding etc. venues in your area - then you get placements when folks search for venues as well. Add anything else you think might want to be associated with too!

I've been running it for about 6 months and I know I've had two confirmed bookings that came through from it, as opposed to links to my own website, as I get adwords clicks to hit a different landing page so I can track them. So far I think it's cost me about £5 in clicks. So not a bad return

thanks vectis

what would you say i should set my maximum cost per click to? i'm a bit worried if i set it too low my ad won't appear, and if i set it too high it'll cost me a fortune

also i've noticed when i search for myself i don't seem to appear for my targeted keywords

I manage multiple adwords campaigns for clients. Most work.

No. An adwords campaign won't affect your "organic" listing at all. It's only for the sponsored listings across the top and down the right hand side.

Trial and error I'm afraid. Start low and see what happens. As you're targetting a small geographical area, it shouldn't cost too much. It all depends on the competition around you, and if anyone is advertising nationally for your desired keywords. My clients range from 5p per click to over £5. The best thig about it is it's all trackable (look for the "conversion tracking" code in Adwords).

I was about to start a thread covering the same issues, how about an update on this for those who have been in it for a while?

Cara, are you still watching? How did your campaign go?

Then you need to alter your copy to target your keywords better :D

How did it go? It's been a week, how would Cara know?

To be honest, the copy on the site has no relevance to the adwords keywords or performance - that's the whole point ;)

hi disco daz

my campoaign has only been running for a week and since i started it i've changed it

at first my adverts were being shown on about 20,000 sites per day, i then realised it's pointless my ad appearing everywhere as someone who lives in new york is not going to book me, so i changed it for my ad's to only appear within a 25 mile radius of where i live.

i also changed how my ads appear, for instance:

you can choose if your ad's appear when someone types in the keywords you've specified, in my case one of my keywords is 'mobile disco hire on merseyside' then you bid on how much you want to pay for your keywords, the higher the bid, the higher you ad will apppear

you can also remove your ads from appearing on other peoples sites as it seemed pointless to me if my ad's are appearing on car showroom sites or ebay.

i'm still pretty new to it so i'm just finding my feet, but on the whole after one week i'd say it seems like a good thing, it gets you to page one on google and you can't really ask for more than that in my opinion

On this note, I noticed that the Adsense ads on the bottom of this forum (which are fed by Google Adwords) occasionally contain an ad for Dragonfly Discos.

Dave - Unless you actually cover the Edinburgh area I'd suggest you do the same and tighten your area for Adwords - no point paying for clicks you can't service.

No, what you describe is your "organic" search result, i.e. what the search engines have found and indexed purely from "spidering" your site (visiting with their automated reader). You should usually expect a high position for your company name, but that's not much good really - you want to be found for more generic phrases like, for example, "disco sevenoaks".

An Adwords campaign is purely for Google results (www.adwords.com), you basically bid on your preferred keywords / phrases and the results are shown in the "sponsored links" section of the Search Engine Results Page (usually the first 2 or 3 at the top, and /or in a column down the right). When someone clicks on your ad Google charges you accordingly. The more you say you are willing to pay per click, the higher up the results you get - i.e. "Pay Per Click".

Log into your adwords account.

On the "Campaign Summary" screen (might be the first page you see), click on the campaign in the "Campaign Name" column.

Click "Edit Campaign Settings".

At the bottom right you'll see "Locations", change this to suit your target area.

Don't forget to click "Save Changes" when you're done :)

Thanks for the advice so far.

it is a good idea to sign up to the google analytics package and link it to your adwords campaign - this way you can tell where all your traffic comes from and work out which ones are paying off.

You may find Google ad words very expensive depending on who your competing with and the return is very poor for your money. I use Marshals ratings and it will get your site on the first page. Google loves Marshals ratings and will scan your site in a matter of hours. Be careful if you are thinking of using Marshals ratings as they will try to sell you a multi ad campaign shared with others so insist you want it working the same as Google ad words it will cost around £400 for the year but it has no limits etc. Google was working out about £900 for the year and your in sponsored listings which for some reason people tend to ignore them for preference of a normal web link.

Geoff do you have a link for marshals rating, never heard of it and google brings up nothing by the looks. be intetested to know how this works as I am not 100% sure my ad words campaign is working at all. thanks

I’m not surprised you couldn’t find it as its called Sheriff Ratings, I’m so sorry you can find them at www.sheriffratings.com I thought I was in trouble when I first joined them as there are so many advertising companies who reckon they can do this and that and until you’ve paid you realise they ripped you off. I’m not DJ’ing at the moment and there is no content in my site other than one picture but if you typed in mobile DJ you should see Sound Matters in the links on the first page but if I was to put content in my web site with key words, rinse it through Google and my link will appear and my main site content will also appear on the first page every time but may be limited to the surrey area. Anyway I’ll leave it to you as I have to go out now, Good luck, Geoffrey

I can understand that you have never heard of them as I think they specialise in big business but they are prepared to help you if you want. I will reload my website this weekend and you can see the results for yourselves.(Although I’m not trading as yet). A lot of websites are full of links in and out etc to get the ratings Google likes but if you pay your money you don’t need all the links to get on the first page. Don’t get me wrong I truly don’t know much about web advertising etc, but all I can tell you is this company got me straight onto page 1 of Google and it stayed their. Note, Not just on the sponsored links as their was heaps of phrases that linked to my site that came from my site. The key search word was mobile Dj. Initially, they got in contact with me so that’s how things got moving and now I wouldn’t use anyone else unless I used a professional web designer who had the knowledge to get me in the same position, even then I’m sure you would still have to part with extra money to get the website out their. (Nothings for free).
