I was having a surf round doing a bit of research on certain issues and couldn't help notice certain things that people have written on their websites.
Things like:
"By law any DJ must have the equipment P.A.T. tested"
"Even if your dj has P.L.I, with out the P.A.T the insurance is invalid."
"Any professional Mobile Disco company will have in excess of £15000 invested in their equipment"
"XXXXX is probably the only Disco/Karaoke firm currently in the county with two complete rigs and crews that do not carry a single CD to its venues."
"Companies who hold the relevant certificates are going to be more reliable "
Right.......

What certificates were they talking about in the last quote?

Not sure it's true per se (I'll be checking! :D ) but it would make an easy get-out for the insurance company if you made a PLI claim because of dodgy electrics...

When I was with Musicguard a few years back, I rang and asked that very question and they told me PAT wasn't anything to do with their policy.

Darren,
I've noticed these kind of statements on a number of sites too, and it really annoys me...because many of the public probably believe it!
This sort of thing really annoys me, as I hate bs.
There's an agency near me (not a member of this forum) who says on his website that he operates 30 mobile discos, when I know for a fact it's no more than 5!
I ensure that the info on my own site is accurate, so I sincerely hope that you didn't find any of these kind of statements on MY site!

It didn't say.I can see where they're coming from if it was refering to PAT & PLI, but (& I'm going to say something controversial here) with so many DJs only getting PAT & PLI for the sake of getting more work, to say that having them would make them "more reliable" is questionable.
There is a stronger likelyhood of them being reputable, but again this is not always the case.
TonyB

Putting my insurance hat on (I work in the industry for 25 years dealing with PLI), in a strict sense, no it is not true.
But as always there are exceptions. If the policy is endorsed with word to the effect of "It is a condition precedent to any liability under this policy that all equipment shall be PAT tested" then it would be true.
If there is a question on the proposal form that asks if all equipment is PAT tested and you have said yes, then not having it could prejudice a claim but only if not being PAT tested was a contributory factor to the claim.
There are probably other examples but I can't think of them at the moment but the best advice if there is any doubt is to check with the insurer or broker.

Yes i agree the PAT thing is a mine field if you look at uk-disco the mobile disco directory they tell the public that PAT is the LAW re mobiles its not but just a hard sell for there services. I think the internet is to blame its so easy to put a lot of crap on your site to attract custom who checks or cares? i wonder what we did in the old days to get bookings progress maybe.

Another controversial post here then.....
PAT per se is NOT the law, but how do you prove you are complying with the law without it?
Regardless of what the policy states, if you made a claim on your PLI and your insurers discovered that you weren't complying with the law with regards to your equipment's safety, wouldn't they try and use this to get out of paying the claim?

Speaking of naming and shaming, this quote came directly from my website, which i feel is a direct stab at my reputation, i know of no other disco firm thats operates the way we do in my county and as for it being untrue, if you can find a cd at my gigs in amongst my equipment, the beer is on me, be careful about accusing people of making untrue statements if you dont know the facts. this forum i believed would be a way of djs sharing ideas and having a bit of a giggle, but from what i can see sometimes people tend to stray off topic, to belittle other members, i am not ashamed to make this statement as most of the local guys end up at my house for advice, all of them agree that my roadshow is unique in the area.
It is sometimes a good idea to check facts before making accusations. if any other mobile firm in my area can prove that i have erred in my statement, i would gladly remove it

It's not a stab at your reputation at all - I came across the quote on another listings site, not on your website.
There are thousands of DJs and companies that don't use CDs at all. Me being one of them for a start. I wasn't having a pop at you, if I was I would have mentioned names. I also wasn't saying you are lieing about not using CDs, just that there are a lot of others out there who don't either.
I don't know why you are getting on your high horse. I am not making accusations, so perhaps you might like to re-word your post. We don't use this forum to belittle people and if that is what you think, then you need to re-read a lot of the posts and threads on here.

If you visit www.mysteriesroadshow.co.uk roadshow page....you will find this quote.... "XXXXX is probably the only Disco/Karaoke firm currently in the county with two complete rigs and crews that do not carry a single CD to its venues." exactly as written....I can't believe you could find it, exactly word for word in this form any where else because its mysteriesman's own wording edited by yours truly! If you read it carefully...it does state 'in this county'. As most of the mobile discos in the area are known to him and me too....the statement is not untrue or rubbish.
If any post needs rewording or editing its the original one which is damaging to this companies reputation.
I am rather embarrassed to have persuaded Mysteriesman to join this forum to have this happen. With his expertise and knowledge in digital DJ systems I felt he had so much to offer other forum users on here. I didn't expect for one minute that he would be subjected to this kind of treatment.

The other thing which annoys me nearly as much are grammatical errors on websites, and you probably won't have to look at more than a couple of sites before you start finding those! In my opinion, it just looks very unprofessional.
:agree: Poor grammar and spelling and layout are rubbish in themselves without the actual content being:BS:
There is a stronger likelyhood of them being reputable, but again this is not always the case.
Which is the exact point I was making elsewhere on the forum.
In an ideal world we shouldn't have to shove PLI certs down peoples throats as a selling point, it should be taken as read that a professional DJ will have PLI, like any professional tradesman.
This industry really does need some kind of regulation.
PAT per se is NOT the law, but how do you prove you are complying with the law without it?
There are actually very few laws that we have to comply with as such.
Again in an ideal world, the equipment we use would carry a mark showing that it was manufactured to a certain specification making it safe to use, sadly some Chinese have found ways round this.
It's down to safe working practices, which is covered by H&S acts, so you could be done for dangerous working practices thereby endagering the public. Not a statute law as such.
Again most of the reasons mentioned in this thread are why we need regulation, organisations such as this one and NADJ could become proper recognised trade associations, bit like Federation of Master Builders and the like.
Meaning that being a member means you OFFICIALLY meet certain standards and carry certain required certificates.
Until then we will just have to put up with the cowboys and numptys and all the bull they put out:(

I've always compared membership of NADJ along similar lines as membership of the cub scouts, and IMHO the idea of NADJ being a regulatory body about as appropriate as the election of the late Screaming Lord Sutch as PM.
Well established and recognised quality control mechanisms already exist in British Industry - such as ISO9001, which carry significantly more clout than wearing a badge/laminated card from the Boys' Brigade, or the like, ever will. There really is no need to reinvent the wheel.

That's very harsh Tony.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
Firstly, I have to admit that I'd never heard of ISO9001 until you mentioned it a while ago and I'm not sure that many others that will book entertainment will have heard of it either.
THe NADJ is about pushing the public's perception of us as an industry up and also trying to protect us as members. How could ISO9001 help us push beyond the barriers that most DJs come up against on a day to day basis? How will it help us become more professional as an industry? How it help us create more opportunities for better and more well paid work? How will it benefit and educate your average DJ?
Let's be honest, there are obviously a lot of procedures that you have to go through to become an ISO9001 company, which I appreciate, but does that make your DJs any better at what they do? Do they get paid more? Do they do better venues? Or is it just procedures that you have to follow as a company just to attain the status of ISO9001?
What does it do for the DJs Tony? Anything, or is it just a piece of paper?
I'm genuinely interested to see how this helps us as an industry.

To be honest if you have such a low view of NADJ then your probably not the kind of DJ who would get anything out of it anyway.
Its not a regulatory body, and doesn't proclaim to be. Its an association where like minded DJs can come together and benefit vastly from the local networking opportunities and many other things including member only offers, legal backup and cheap PLI.
Its the nearest thing we have as an industry to a mark of quality. You can't become a member without PAT and PLI and all members subscibe to a code of conduct and are of course accountable if they break it.
It can work as a selling point to say that you're part of an national association and commited to improve your skills/fees/professionalism as part of that membership (back to local networking/branches again)
My own personal experience with NADJ is its brought me into contact with lots more DJs that I wouldn't have known (not every DJ posts on forums..), and as such have more people I would feel confident passing work to, and vice versa.
The local meetings are also fantastic for swapping advice and experience - face to face networking can be a lot better than virtual networking on forums.. where lets face it, there's a lot of BS!
Its a rapidly expanding association, not massive at the moment, but everything has to start somewhere. Pointless negativity doesn't get us anywhere.. and its half the problem with the "no one will pay X for a DJ" brigade (but I won't go into that!), so what have you got to lose? Get yourself along to a meeting and find out what its all about before coming out with comments like the above..
Let's be honest, there are obviously a lot of procedures that you have to go through to become an ISO9001 company, which I appreciate, but does that make your DJs any better at what they do? Coincidentally, we had our annual external audit last week. This focuses heavily on ensuring we adhere to defined processes in relation to quality control and customer satisfaction, and that issues arising are formally addressed with learnings taken to improve processes and ultimately customer service. The audit also checks the more routine points, such as PAT records, PAT calibration certification, block liability policy, etc. In fact, the only side of the business NOT covered by it is the financials.
ISO9001 is good for our Company, our Customers and our DJs alike, and has without doubt improved and continues to improve our customer service levels, which we are passionate (TBH obsessive) about.
I know my views on NADJ may be perceived as hard, however they are well founded. Years ago we were members of TVDJA before it became NADJ, and this membership added as much value to our business as a car with four flat tyres. :(
We attempted DJ recruitment via the association, we put together CD and equipment special offers for association members and the response was dismal.
Many association members across London & Southern England were paranoid about price and renowned for bull-:Censored: each other with "I won't go out of the door for less than £whatever, however when my marketing lady used to carry out competitor intelligence surveys these same individuals would quote prices for often £100 less than they'd said they would even get up for
Hopefully this explains why I can never take the likes of NADJ very seriously. But as I say, it is just my 2p worth :)

But why is ISO9001 good for your DJs Tony and how do they define quality control? Do they go and watch DJs perform or is just a case of the right paperwork? How does the customer satisfaction work?
I have block liability, PLI and employers liability insurance. We PAT test in house and admitedly we are a lot smaller than you, but take customer service just as seriously. We are incorporated, Vat registered and members of the FSB. I run this forum along with Angela and my mods and admin for the benefit of DJs generally. I belong to the LWP, which is pushing to sort a fair licence out for DJs and have met with the BPI, MCPS and PPL.
What is ISO9001 doing for DJs Tony or is it just another piece of paper to say you run your business in the correct manner?
Grass roots stuff maybe, but how does this affect the DJ?
But why is ISO9001 good for your DJs Tony and how do they define quality control?
The external audit checks compliance against processes defined by the Company, in the simplest of terms it's about being able to prove the business does what it has said it will do.
Do they go and watch DJs perform or is just a case of the right paperwork? How does the customer satisfaction work?
The auditor checks post-function customer satisfaction surveys, and our response to them. They also review the minutes of management meetings, in respect of QC issues, how we have addressed them and what learnings or change in process has resulted from them. They do not visit functions to watch DJs perform.

Without going into the nuts and bolts of our business model, as I have already stated, ISO9001 is good for the Company, our Customers and our DJs alike. This is based upon the fact that our already excellent levels of customer satisfaction continue to improve year on year, DJ recruitment and development is stronger than ever, mix of business continues to improve, DJ pay continues to improve year on year. The ISO9001 framework has proved to be an excellent framework for us to develop the business and its processes within.

So ISO9001 is actually not a measure of how good your DJs are or perform or how much they get paid or how they they are looked after.
I totally understand your reasons for ISO9001, but this is for you and your company and not for the benefit of DJs. NADJ, as little and as tin pot as you think it is, is an association for DJs.
The fact that your DJ pay improves year upon year is nothing to do with ISO9001, which was my point. How does ISO9001 improve recruitment? Does the fact that you PAT test in house and have this accreditation mean your DJs are more trustworthy and do a better job? Sorry if I keep banging on, but none of these questions seem to be answered.
You have said:
"The auditor checks post-function customer satisfaction surveys, and our response to them. I don't wish to be rude, but what the hell does that mean? They check minutes of meetings? I sit on many committees, including governing body, children's charity and football club committee and this means not a lot IMO.
They don't watch the DJ perform, so therefore there is no real check apart from paperwork. The rest of the quote is complete rubbish to get your company a certificate and to satisfy ISO9001.
Please don't think this is a pop at you Tony, but I am interested in furthering the DJs career and looking after the average DJ and not gaining another cerificate for my company, which this seems to be about?
I respect your professionalism, but I am not sure that this is the right way to move things forward for us as an industry.

 OK Daz, I believe you, despite finding the above somewhat contradictory. Believe it or not though, I do believe we do share the same goals - we're both passionate about customer service and we both want to improve the standard of work and pay for DJs.
The fact we are taking different paths to achieve this is just fine - it's the end results that matter.
Finally, to keep this balanced, I would like to say that I believe vehicles such as this forum are absolutely superb in assisting our mutual quest and I greatly respect the work you and the rest of the team do on MDD.
I'm aware there is an overlap of MDD and NADJ membership, however have always found (most) of the members on here to be straightforward and down to earth, and have indeed successfully recruited a number of DJs via the forums.

Ultimately ISO9001 is a business efficiency benchmark, what it really says is that your business practices are best, er, practice :D
"Get the basics right and the rest will fall into place."
There's no doubt that having a transparent management system will help with the business side of things but the performance side of things, and the way that is received by clients is subjective, not objective. Whilst appropriate business management will get you so far in the case of a dispute with a client there are aspects of what might be complained about that can't be benchmarked. How would ISO define 'suitability of music', for example?
If you are a sufficiently large multi-op then ISO has its place, but below a certain income point the cost of compliance outweighs any possible value.

My tuppence worth...
I was having a surf round doing a bit of research on certain issues and couldn't help notice certain things that people have written on their websites.
Things like:
"By law any DJ must have the equipment P.A.T. tested"
Fair enough that's a no...
Just shows that there is still nowhere near enough factual information available to DJs let alone clients.
"Even if your dj has P.L.I, with out the P.A.T the insurance is invalid."
This is very possible and depends on the individuals insurance company. Whilst PAT testing is not a legal requirement it is a statutory requirement and many insurance companies require the insured to comply with all current regulations.
Check your small print peeps...;)
"Any professional Mobile Disco company will have in excess of £15000 invested in their equipment"
The use of the word "Any" is unfortunate but many operators will have spent many thousand's of pounds on kit.
You could even argue that those who do act as professionally as possible are more likely to invest in the best quality kit available hence the investment made will be higher than the norm.
However, I concede that acting professionally and buying the best kit does not necessarily make you the "best" DJ.
"XXXXX is probably the only Disco/Karaoke firm currently in the county with two complete rigs and crews that do not carry a single CD to its venues."
As Carlsberg is probably the best lager in the world?
They might be right!
"Companies who hold the relevant certificates are going to be more reliable "
Seems a reasonable assumption to me. Operators who have gone to the effort of running their business legally and above board will in all probability be more reliable than cash in hand "geezers".
Looking at all of the above it is no wonder clients are confused...:bang:
Maybe the DJs whose websites have been quoted would be better served by trying to sell the benefits of booking them rather than trying to prove that they have the right certificates etc.
You don't book a DJ because they have the best PLI do you?

Here's my take on this:
The most important thing for MY business is customer satisfaction.
This is currently 99.75%.
Having some ISO rating that nobody has heard of would make no difference to this figure, and it's therefore irrelevant to my business.
Here's my take on this:
The most important thing for MY business is customer satisfaction.

I've always been under the impression that this was actually true, but have yet to confirm.
this depends on the policy- some do some dont

I was going to mention that. The only people that will be impresseed with that statement are the tech-heads. It's a good move for the business to play in that way, but not something that will sell your buesiness's ability, I would've thought.

Years ago we were members of TVDJA before it became NADJ, and this membership added as much value to our business as a car with four flat tyres. :( I can understand where you are coming from there Tony: I think the NADJ does suffer from people's feelings of the old TVDJA. We, too, were members but became very disillusioned. TBH, the memories of those times is one of the main reasons that we haven't joined NADJ.

I was beginning to feel this site had become the NADJ 2nd forum with MDJOL its 3rd LOL
I do feel the MDA actually got sorted out again, with a stronger foundation as since it has wained in recent months. With to many ego wars out there in some of the threads. In the last year I took some time out and came back due to personal reasons, but feel that I may do the same again as it seems the same ole circle of people are running things to there desires rather than being a fair democratic forum for the MDA and MDD. Some people are continually saying there way is the best way, and not taking into account the of others feelings.
This may all be unintentional and can only suggest a change of some moderators as they may have a short respite or break from the site....

Sorry Im not allowed a diplomatic freedom of speech being a small upstart disco, But I can and will stay here where I can keep a few of you guys in check????,
Diplomatic freedom of speech does not include calling people idiots, hence the reason why your posts were deleted after you asked us to do so. Remember? Keep a few of us guys in check? What are you on about? We run this forum for other DJs benefit, to help others and ourselves learn and to create a community where we can discuss relevant and non relevant information.
My failings are a learning curve I will learn on my own it seems as no one wants to help the smaller guys with basic tricks of the trade unless we JUMP up and DOWN and make a nusance of ourselves. and this thread is an epitomy of just everything I am saying.
Everyone has gone out of their way to give you advice, most of which you haven't taken, so there's your answer. You really think making a nusance of yourself is going to help you or anyone else? We give all the help and advice we can and the fact you keep mentioning the 'fat cat' discos seems to me to smack of professional jealousy. I have worked very hard to get to where I am now and did it by taking and using others advice and putting it into practise. And that is on my own. No silver spoon.
Some of us are able to be smarter than the long in the tooth mobile operators. I wont mention names as most of you know whom you are which some of you I respect others deserve a major kick up the jacksy with the comments they have made to me and many others over the last 3 years...........
And you wonder why you get comments made to you when you post such complete tosh? I respect people's opinions and values and this site was always here to help and advise people and to progress us as an industry and to promote better practise. Some people are just passed learning. They ask questions and then don't listen to the answers. Then they have the cheek to say no-one cares or helps out the smaller guys. Wrong. Ask how many people on here phone me regularly for advice on certain things.
I made a truthful comment in trying or getting this sites MDA BACK on its feet and running it as a proper association again so we may stop worrying about each other as individuals and start getting things done together as an association. rather than going through another 2 years of rubbishing and slandering of each other just because we do it diferently

Sorry, but you appear to be on another planet. I don't have any 'rivals' on here. I work with people to progress and I certainly don't give abuse to 'smaller' businesses. If someone is not taking advice and is very thick skinned and not listening to others, then sometimes you have to say it like it is so that those particular people understand.

Moderators will have a break if needed - they are voluntary and chosen by myself and Angela, not by anyone else in the forum. It runs very smoothly with the people we have asked to help us. They do a fantastic job and if they couldn't do it anymore they would tell us.
If Boy George was that interested in this site and mobile DJing, then perhaps he could come on himself and say hello. I very much doubt he has the time or inclination to do so.
If you read your threads Badger, you are constantly harping on about bigger operators and being a small fish. Get over it. You are the only one who mentions things like this constantly and it gets very boring. I took this as a pop at me because you have been doing it for ages.
If people don't like the way this site is run, then they are free to leave and some have chosen to do that. You have the same choice. We run the site the way we feel is correct and it benefits a lot of people out there.
If you feel we are 'controlling' then why do you come here for?
There are people who disagree with a lot of things that I say and vice versa. It's the very nature of what this forum is for - to promote best practise and discussion. Not everyone will agree about everything, but we have certain principles that we will act on and stand by, because we do pay for and run this site and that is our prerogative.
You say that you're the only member from Haverhill in the directory. Perhaps the others don't use the internet or forums? A possibility I would have thought?

I really get the impression from a lot of your posts that you have a chip on your shoulder with multi-ops in general. Wether it's intentional or you have some sort of deep-rooted problem with any of them I don't know, but it sure does read like that to me. I'm not a multi-op, just a casual observer to what I read and see.

Badger, looking at the map, Haverhill is not exactly a huge place, is it?
I guess (and I'm sure Daz or Ang could confirm) that there are many small towns where there is only one MDA member registered. Your situation won't be unique and I wouldn't call that apathy.
We do occasionally place DJs to functions in Haverhill, but nothing like as often as to the surrounding B.Stortford, Braintree, Cambridge, Colchester etc, which in comparison are very large towns/city, where there are likely to be a lot more DJs registered.

I've just read all of this, and I just can't believe that we are back to all this again..... although in all honesty, I still don't know what the point that Badger is trying to make: plenty of words, plenty of hinting, plenty of veiled criticism, plenty of beating about the bush - but very little said.
I have seen many many smaller operators scared off to other sites because of the high and mighty attitudes upon this site?
I dont want to get caught up in all this but i actually came to this site because other forums were being nasty and not much being done about it.
I like this forum because most people are friendly, people follow the rules and give good advice.
Im glad i have stayed, it feels like a family, community where you can talk about anything about dj'ing or even if its other things on your mind.

exactly the same for me chap .... word for word .... I was told about this forum by two of its members very nice chaps both of them and have enjoyed every day ive been on here some hilariously funny some a little more serious ...
I have been treated as an equal by everyone and helped out in a whole host of ways by some of the bigger players on the phone in pm email and face to face , I myself am a small fish 1 man trying to run my business on my own with a single rig and have had relatively little business knowlege taught to me , so what i have picked up here has improved what i do tenfold and been very helpful.

One notable point about this forum, which is absolutely great, is the number of young DJs that are active in posting, and the fact they can openly ask for advice without being afraid of asking a silly question. In my book, no question is silly if the person asking it wants to learn and absorb that information. Today's young DJs are tomorrow's backbone of the industry, and this forum helps them develop.
To me, that's quite a unique point about this forum. I occasionally post on several other (pro. sound and electrical) forums, the level of knowledge is generally excellent, however I often see an unnecessary "cold shoulder" given to newbies or instances where forum veterans may deem a silly question has been asked.
For example, a few weeks ago on one of these forums, a relatively new member asked what (to me) seemed a fair question - "what's better for vox - beta 58a or 87a?" The answers that came back within ten minutes were "how thick is a piece of wood?" and "what's better - ham or beetroot?" That sort of sarcasm isn't tolerated on MDD, and 99% of the time eveyone gets on well and helps each other. Let's keep it that way.

Got to agree with post's #79, 82, 84.......for all those reason's.
I like this site as well because.....'it's free'.....yes free....i don't pay a thing unless i want to.....but it's not the other way round for the owners....they pay.....for what to be insulted....nice that eh?.......set up a site, pay, give information freely.......and get insulted......
We all have opinions and options...either choose to listen and act or listen and ignore.....or switch the d@mn thing off........what's hard about that.
I personally have had a stack load of help on here as well as phone call's.....i've never asked for these phone numbers...they gave them to me.....even thought they are on the web page....
Still learning and more important net working with other people with the same interest.......
Keep it up you all do a good job!:)

I have to say that it is nice to see people coming forward and saying that they do get something out of this site.
I know that there will always be a clash of personalities and disagreements, but I sincerely hope that people can see beyond that and make the most of what the site has to offer.
There have been several regular members that I personally have fallen out with over the last year, due to differences of opinion and they have taken their leave of the forum, which I think is a shame as there is so much to be learned for everyone on here.
Sometimes, the running of this forum and site feels like a thankless task especially when all some people do is take take take and don't actually give anything back.
Thanks again for all your support.

I agree and if you read something you don't like, ignore it and move on.
Mr Badger, I can't see where you are coming from. These forums are a gold mine of information and have helped me no end in my first venture of being self employed.
You shouldn't judge your own success by what others are doing but by your own achievements. Why do you worry so much about what others are doing? It would be a lot more productive if you channeled that time and energy into your own business.
Edit: Forgot to mention that one of the most valuable things I have got from the forums is networking. It has been great meeting and working with other DJ's which probably wouldn't of happened if it wasn't for the forums.

I have to say that it is nice to see people coming forward and saying that they do get something out of this site.
Indeed :claphands:
Although I've been in "the business" for the best part of 25 years, a couple of years ago I basically 'started again' as I relocated halfway across the country. It was a perfect opportunity to reinvent myself and freshen up the act and the service offering, so as part of the move I sold all my gear bar a box of leads and my music collection. I'd cruised for a few years with minimal investment so much of it was due for the skip anway :o
Cruising this forum I soon noted that the majority of contributors are passionate about the industry and have lots of good stories and experiences to share. Importantly for me, they're also willing to share their bad experiences, and this helped me no end when deciding what the future shape of VectisVibe was going to look like. I was comforted by the fact that most of my ideas and ideals were in fact perceived best practice by folks I regard as experts, but there were some aspects of my offering that were definitely called into question and I now have a steadily growing business with a top notch reputation that will hopefully one day soon allow me to exit the rat-race and work for myself 100% of the time.
Building and managing a forum of this nature, which quite frankly pretty much anyone with a valid email address can subscribe to, is not an easy task. There are a lot of ne'er-do-well's out there and keeping them at bay is just one thankless task; there are others, particularly when disputes arise or rules are railroaded over. So my thanks go out to Darren, Steve & Co. for providing this valuable asset. And if you don't like their opinions or the way that disputes get handled, well there are plenty of "other places" you can go to. I've cruised them, but never joined them. There's no point. Everything I need in a mobile disco association is right here. :approve:

Haverhill, Suffolk — Population: 22,010 (2001 Census)
Thank you solitaire but heres the reality population is 30,000 + more like now, but lets use this small backwater town as a guide to disco reality
With 13 seperate disco businesses, 2 x large with town tied up, other 11 fighting for more work including myself only 3 with actual PLI of which I am 1 of them, 2 others I know whom have invested in this since I spoke to them. 1 with PAT (me 2 yr cover) the rest is just a laughed at by disco owners and venue owners alike. Just whom informs the disco's as to the fact that they should have PLI & Pat. whom is responsible, whom checks them, and as well as that out of the venue owners whom cares enough in a small town like Haverhill NO ONE. If I cant break this town then Its bno supprise I do most of my work out of town....
If this is expanded on a national level this would mean that in reality no one gives a dam as long as they get a disco that is cheap and cheerful, that quietly does a good job, for people to continues using the same old non caring disco owners then I am in a losing battle . In Haverhill the mentality its not what you know but whom you know
These facts are the truth and not rubbish I asked someone to ring up every local disco and was told blatant lies upon the phone by disco owners in my own town. Yes I know a lot of DJ's we all chat too each other. If this happens on a national level and we wonder why the likes of X+ suddenly sully our names as disco owners
This site stood for something as an association. That has sort of disapated now. I feel that it is doing nothing but drifting without real leadership or direction all barr the work done by the LWP
Some of you have given me good advice over time but some of you will not allow alternative points of view, wether they are radical, useful, silly or not. If I have upset anyone I am sorry but the point of a forum is to debate issues. some of you seem bored of PLI & PAT but I will continue to bang on about this, til every disco is forced into taking it up by law. Then maybe we will all have a level playing field, till then the pirate part time and non tax paying disco's will always win. No matter how hard I may try to establish myself...

I have not just gone around asking I have met up with other local disco's as to see if we can improve things as a simular business buy ensuring we all have PLI & Pat tested equipment, but the 2 largest businesses refused to turn up and I have used there equipment when DJing out of the need to earn money just DJing sometimes and the last time they Pat tested was just before the last blitz in 1999. Haverhill is the largest growing TOWN in Suffolk currently thanks. The site has no letters to encourage PAT or PLI to other businesses. And we never seem to do anything as an association so I may just move over to the NADJ and become another member and arrange a local meeting along with the likes of Ricey and David pengally

I was asking you a civil question. If you make statements like that, then be prepared to back them up. Why am I belittling you and your business?
You must remember that we do not enforce PLI and PAT which are currently not a legal requirement, we encourage best practise. We do not go round policing something that is not a legal requirement.
What do you mean 'move over' to NADJ? There are a fair amount of active NADJ members already on this site, myself included and I like to think that we all work together and have common aims. I seem to remember you not wanting to pay the £50 membership fee a while back?
Why does everything keep coming back to PI and PAT? What do you think you're acheiving by keeping banging on about it? When we did do things as an association you weren't involved. You didn't come to any of the meetings. There was no offer of anything that I remember.
It's all very well posting these things up, but what are you actually doing? What have you done and what will you be doing in the future?

Badger - if you never pitch your business above the local pub/working mens' club level, then irrespective of whether you operate in a small town, large town, city or conurbation - the loyalty will always be to price.
If I were in your position, I would think outside my box and pitch my business to a higher quality clientele, and steer well clear of the "no paperwork and cash on the night mate innit" business.
If you could divert just a fraction of the time and energy you spend on worrying about what others are and are not doing, into YOUR OWN business, I really believe it may turn around your fortunes. Why not give it a go, I think you could be pleasantly surprised.
Thank you solitaire but heres the reality population is 30,000 + more like now, but lets use this small backwater town as a guide to disco reality
With 13 seperate disco businesses, 2 x large with town tied up,
Nonsense. No town is "tied up" when it comes to quality business. It may be for £50.00 a night pub jobs, so as I've already said, set your sights higher and don't worry about the fly-by-night gangsters that dominate the bottom end of the business.
My company frequently secures quality work in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire - there's plenty of work out there if you've got the forseight and nouse to get out and sell yourself and your capabilities.

In Haverhill the mentality its not what you know but whom you know • WHO & WHOM
Who is correct?
Yes, though it may depend on whom you ask!
“Who” and “whoever” are subjective pronouns; “whom” and “whomever” are in the objective case. As simple and important as that distinction is, many people have difficulty deciding on the proper usage of “who” and “whom” in sentences.
The two sentences below illustrate the easy usage in which “who” is clearly the subject and “whom” is clearly the object. In such simple cases, virtually everyone can determine the proper choice:
Who is that masked man? (subject)
The men, four of whom are ill, were indicted for fraud. (object)
When “who” is not the main subject of the sentence, however, many people become confused. They tinker and change who to “whom.”
It was Thomas Jefferson, I think, who was the third president of the United States.
Notice that “who,” not “whom,” is still the correct form as the subject of the clause that follows. The proper name, Thomas Jefferson, could be substituted for “who” to make a perfectly good sentence:
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States.
As a ready check in such sentences, simply substitute the personal pronoun “he/him” or “she/her” for “who/whom.” If he or she would be the correct form, the proper choice is who.” If “him” or “her” would be correct, use “whom.”
This technique of substituting a personal pronoun for the relative pronoun works nicely whenever you have difficulty deciding whether to use “who” or “whom,” assuming that you have no difficulty using the proper form of personal pronouns.
Even when the word order must be altered slightly, you can use the technique:
Mrs. Dimwit consulted an astrologer whom she met in Seattle. (She met him in Seattle.)
Jones is the man whom I went fishing with last spring. (I went fishing with him.)
Joyce is the girl who got the job. (She got the job.)
Whom can we turn to in a time of crisis? (Can we turn to her?)
The delegates differed as to who they thought might win. (Not whom. Here the entire clause is the object of the preposition. Substitution is particularly helpful in cases such as this. They thought he might win.)
Who is that masked man? (subject)
The men, four of whom are ill, were indicted for fraud. (object)
Three “easy-to-use” rules
so you'll always get it correct
Rule #1: Substitute “he/him” or “she/her”: If it's either “he” or “she,” then it's “who;” if it's “him” or “her,” then it's “whom.”
Rule #2: Every verb with a tense in a sentence must have a subject. And that word is always in the nominative case, so it's “who.” For example: In this sentence, “I decided to vote for whoever called me first”:
• “I” is the subject of “decided”
• “he” (whoever) is the subject of the verb “called.”
In the sentence, “Give it to whoever deserves it”: ([You] give it to whoever deserves it.)
• “he” (whoever) is the subject of the verb “deserves.”
This rule supersedes the first rule as it relates to who” and “whom.”
Note: Related to this rule is one that says: The subject of a phrase is always attached to that phrase — no matter what. For example:
Ask whoever reads that book to answer the question.
Break down the sentence thusly:
(You) ask him (he reads that book) to answer the question.
In the phrase “he reads that book,” you cannot separate the subject “he” from the phrase to which it is attached.
If you remember these two rules — substitute “he/him” or “she/her,” and that every verb with a tense must have a subject — you should solve the “who/whom” quandary every time.
If you apply those two rules and you're still not sure, apply the all-important Rule #3.
Rule #3: Give it a sincere and honest effort to determine is it's “who” or “whom.” If it takes more than a 30 seconds to figure it out, pick the one that sounds best to the ear (read it aloud) and move on. Why? Because even grammarians are likely to squabble over which to use. But always — always — apply rules #1 and #2 before using Rule #3.

The only person who has belittled you & your small business is actually you, by banging on about it & how bad you have it compared to multi ops.
News flash! If you look into what qualifies as a small business, I think you'll find that we are all small businesses. Contrary to your beliefs those of us involved in multi ops don't all drive Bentleys & live in mansions. Running 4 times the ammount of DJs to you only really means 4 times the expenses. The only thing that changes the profit margins is how much the different companies charge per gig.

Hate to say this to get too meetings you need a car or vehicle at ready hand to attend, my vehicle (a van) is mainly for hire at weekends not when meetings usually took place something I intend to remedy this year. I infuture will be looking after yes you got it NO 1. as I learnt as a DJ years ago, silly me, I forgot that associations just dont work at any level
When was the last time you went to the press to encourage Best Practice matey probably never. I did it twice in my local press to no avail. People in general just dont give a Txss they just want a disco. Oh yes I for got the NADJ members basically tried to take over this site no wonder so many independanrt disco's have gone else where and if It means I have to pay £50 to put you in you place at a meeting then so be it (if I can get there)

In regards to PLI & Pat prehaps it was time we changed our Tact and started a course towards legislation in the need for them as standard. Prehaps we will the route out the fakes upon this site

Kaz I am in agreement with you to a degree this is one of the best forum sites for information sometimes, but other times it seems like a clicky club of old boys whom rule the roost a bit like an ex servicemens club.
Recently a friend was belittled like me upon this site and another disco as well it is not the first time it has happend and now I want a complete cesation of these events. I would like too see a little more diplomatic thought in the replies before someone ends up sueing another for libelous comments. I recently learnt my mistakes but others upon this site seem to feel they are above the law. It will only take one action in court to get this site shut down or severely reprimanded with heavy court costs...
I dont feel that the ADMIN or moderators could face the brunt of this and being a female mobile disco owner means nothing in the equation You are as welcome as Boy George to join LOL

I have to reiterate , I am a sole trader here and have never felt it like an old boys club ....and i'd say im on more than most lol.
It was infact one of the "old boys" who told me about this forum as I was having trouble on another with people who I felt really were .. if you don't have this , this and this or use Denon Abstract or Martin you are quite obviously rubbish, it was also the same "old boy" who then phoned me up to see if I was ok (as i was getting not very nice emails) and ask if they had stopped.
The beauty of this forum is all are welcome whatever gear you have or age you are , yes there are certain percieved standards that people belive should be maintained and aspired to but to my mind that can only be a good thing.
We have a wealth of knowledge on here most willing to give advice whenever asked for ..... yes sometimes the advice isn't what you want to hear or put forward in a softly softly cotton wool approach but then some people aren't softly softly people and you have to realise it is advice on your ideas ie :
I think your idea is rubbish because .......
and not
I think you are rubbish because you have had the idea....
I think most on here are always constructive in their critisizm and their advice , I have asked for loads and recieved loads , and hopefully maybe given a few tips or at least given people a giggle if they have come in and perhaps had a bit of a "mare" of a gig.
Some of the advice ive taken some not , but to me that is what makes me unique or as my wife says "special" and moved my business on to what it is now.
I think the young DJs we have on here are great guys too Tom and Callum spring to mind , both with great personalitys and willing to contribute and listen in a way imo far beyond their years.
To sum up as well and I genuinely mean this statement those that know me know that this is in no way an exaggeration..
If it wasn't for this forum and the people on it this year I would have had to cancel all of my xmas bookings at very short nitice crippling my reputation and the only way I would have survived into 2008 financially would have been to sell all my gear and indeed the business, not to mention gone completely bonkers as ive been under house arrest for 10 weeks.
so I personally owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who own run and contribute to the site.

Thanks, Dave.
Badger, you're very much entitled to your opinion, but I firmly believe you are wrong on most of your viewpoints in this thread. It seems the members viewpoints in this thread differ completely to yours. Does that make all of them wrong and you right?.
You mention 'clicky'. When a forum has so many regular members that use it, and the members have a close bond (as they do in this place) you're always going to get people that perceive themselves to be outsiders or not part of the group. The truth is that I don't know anyone on the forum that hasn't tried to make all new members as welcome as possible. I've been a member on a lot of forums, and this is one of the most relaxed I've used. At the end of the day we're all equal here, there are no 'clicks'', as you put it. You are however welcome to your opinions.
Peace. :)

Why are you belittling me lets say your wording is enough to suggest you need to learn to be a little bit more diplomatic in future as some of us are fed up of it.
For the last time, I am not belittling you and please don't tell me how to act on a site that I co-own.
I am now getting fed up with these totally unfounded comments and wasting my time answering some of the total rubbish you are typing.

What are you talking about now?
Who thinks they are 'above the law' and court action for what?
And you of all people are talking about diplomacy? Pots and kettles are coming to mind here.
There haven't been any libelous comments. As I said some people disagree with me and I disagree with them. So what? It doesn't mean they have to sulk and leave, does it? Life is too short for that.

We seem to be going around in circles here, and we're so far off the original topic discussion... this thread has run it's course.
I think everyone's had thier say. Thank you to everyone that's posted comments of support and encouragement.
