Hi all,
Just got in from doing a 40th birthday party and what a wierd night it was!!
Nice big venue, good stage and the 2 x Dynarocks, 2 x LittLED's, Wildtech Fascination and Lasers plus haze looked really good in there. The sound was nice too BUT...whatever I played, hardly anyone danced to it. There must have been around 60 guests but at the most there must have been 10 dancing.
A lot of families there and some oldies and they left around 10.30pm (I was booked from 7.30pm - Midnight). The barman came over and said that they weren't making enough money over the bar so would I call last orders early. Honestly, 4 1/2 hours felt like double that..it was almost embarassing to be stood up there 'entertaining'.
Anyway, I chucked on 'Tainted Love' (12") and nipped outside for a fag (I don't normally) around 11pm and the birthday boy and his girlfriend were outside. Would you believe they asked me to do their wedding next year!!!!?!? When I went back inside, someone had left a note for me on my decks for some 'cheesy' music...I just went with it and played the usual stuff, 'Grease', 'Cha Cha Slide' etc etc...and the people that were left all got up. This narked me a bit because there were request slips on all the tables with pens and I mentioned a number of times that I was open to requests but not one person bothered, almost as if they were embarassed.
By the last song (a request for 'Amarillo') there were around 20 people left and when the lights went up and I said "good night", they all clapped and a few of them came over and asked me for cards and said they'd had a great night. This has happened once or twice to me in all the time I have been DJing. I'm not narked off now because I think that if they enjoyed it then that's all that matters. Yes, it would have been nice if they had danced as that's what we're there for in the first place but at the end of the day, not everyone wants to dance.
As I said, wierd night!!
