Phanton Power

Not exactly disco type stuff, but i'm sure someone will know.......

If you have a mixer with phantom power switched on (to all channels), will it affect any dynamic mics, or mics that don't use phantom power?

If i was micing a singer with an SM58 and their Guitar with a condener (that needs phantom power), could i turn on phantom power on the desk, or would that damage the 58. (would i infact have to power in with an external phantompower box on the line.

phantom power (48v) will only with the condencer mics. condencer mics require extra power for them to work.

It will not affect your other mics at all.

tbh you wond really need a condencer for guitar mic'ing. you want to use a SM57 for guitar work really, as they give the best overall flat sound. You only really want to use a concencer for over heads (cymbals) on the drums.

Thats what i was looking for. I thought so, its just the technician at school bought a 3 way PhPo box for some stage mics (which are rubbish and don't work anyway), when there is PhPo capability on the desk we use. Then again, it is the same technician who matched a 500watt set of speakers with a 300watt amp (in the same ohms). And bought a gorgeous peavey pa and mixer, with sm58s (the works) and puts 3 £50 little mics on stage to pick up the whole lot. AND HE NEVER LISTENS TO ME :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Yeah, actually i agree that if i had the chance i would use a sm57, but i didn't have one. All i had was my really nice mxl condenser.

Having just read this again, it may be worth clarifying whether you are refering to an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar + amp.

Condensors such as the AKG C451 or Shure SM81 are popular for miking acoustic guitars.

For miking a Guitar Amp, go for the 57.

You say your school's tech has done all these bad things, and that he doesn't listen to you.

Remember who is the member of staff and who is the student here. He may have matched an amp with a set of speakers like that for a reason (no reason for power, or a school's favourite BUDGET). As you won't know about the budget side of things (even if they tell you bits - students never know the full story).

I'll tell you one thing, (and being a tech in a school myself, I apply this "theory") - You won't do yourself any favours making out your bigger or better than him, you'll infact do yourself damage on the reputation front. He is bigger/better than you - as he's doing it as a job, even if it does turn out you "know more" than he does!

heres the low down if it goes POP then its not meant to work like that, if it hisses then its not not meant to work like that, if it smokes then its not comaptable, if it gives you an electric shock then its not not meant to work like that. Get my drift :D

In rubbish/loose connected cables you may experience crackles, sudden thumps and general bad sound noises...as you're passing 48v down the cable after all.

lol. TBH i totally agree with you WIll, and in school he is boss because as you say 'he is staff' and i don't have any legs to stand on. Which is fine, after all if something is wrongly matched/set up it isn't my fault.

But i just get really frustrated with it and when i am on here i can squeal and complain all i like and you chaps can understand. (i hope)
