hi everyone!

ive just started doing "discos" and was wondering if you could give me some good tips/advice about running discos etc.

also any good cds to get hold of, or places that you can download good remixes of songs?

I have two bits of advice to give you.
1 whatever you buy spend 70% of your budget on sound and 30% on lighting as you carnt do a disco without sound.
2 is ing when using the mic speak clearly and with queens english always say like coming up next not cummin up next.
Ps when your on the forum dont be like me and not use punctuation i am getting better

Hi there Jack :)

Okay yeah, a few tips:

1. If your using extension leads, do make sure that they are fully extended. If you dont fully extend the leads, there is a risk of the leads burning and may set on fire so it's always best to fully extend them.

2. Dont speak too much on the mic. Most people will just want to listen to the music. I normally use the mic for shoutouts to friends, bar staff etc, requests and music on the way. And also, if your a little shy of looking at the crowd while plugging on the mic - look at the back of the room and focus on 1 point.

3. Send out a booking form and get a deposit. At least if they cancel you, you can keep the deposit.

4. Always shop around for the best price. eBay is a good place to look at shop sellers as there prices seem to be considerably lower than the highstreet disco shop. But what I'd do is look on eBay get a good price, then contact the highstreet disco shop who will price beat and if they can match or better still quote a better price then buy from the highstreet shop because at least if your gear fails, it'll be easy to return the gear straight to the highstreet disco shop, whereas if you buy from an eBay seller, you have to go through more to get the gear fixed.

uuuhhmmmm, some tips.

Use this forum to glean knowledge from fellow dj's most of the time you'll find the answer to your question from someone on here.

Another is to get to know your local dj's and get yourself a little local network, it'll be vital when the work starts to come in.

Have to agree with the 70/30 budget split on the set up aswell.

Welcome to the forum.

For buying music i would say set your self a weekly or monthly budget and stick to it. play.com and amazon are great places but dont forget asda. they are selling a lot of cd's much cheaper than online shops.

as for the 70/30 i agree again. music is more impotant that lighting, but lighting also creates a mood. dont forget to register your buisness ith HM revenue and also you must have PLI and PAT. anyway....

my advice is try to develop interesting intros to your music, mainly because i feel ( don't know if other members agree ) that intro's such as - and lined up to play is - coming up is - i have so & so ready to play next, gets so boring , yes i agree punters are mainly interested in your music but putting yourself across with a bit of sparkle will also make you interesting. good luck. all the best

I've been DJing around 6-8 months now and have found this forum invaluable.

My main advice (from experience) is, to avoid spending loads of money (easily done) make sure you know exactly what kind of DJ you want to be and equipment to use. I made the mistake of going in at CD level and have now moved over to digital.

I know different people like different media but I'm really glad I moved to laptop. Only thing is, I now have a dual CD player that I want rid of (so I can buy some decent DMX lights). And it cost me a lot!!!

I have a single CD player as a backup with a CD with 10 mixes on it (i.e. around 5 songs mixed together) so if I need to reboot for any reason, I can quickly switch to CD and hit play. The mix then plays until my system is ready.

I have never used it yet and hopefully never will, but it's nice to know I'm covered.

And now I've got the sound side of things as I want them, I can now spend some money on a half decent DMX light show.

Dont have your speakers close together. have your high end speakers on a stand. dont do over the top with power, judge it and go for a nice comfortable level what you think is best. Run with 2 scanners and 2 projector lights and one centre piece, as you dont get payed more for more gear. Make sure you make a proffit. Get equipment that will last and that you dont need to keep changing every so often.
