Full Time vs Part Time

Following on from a few comments on another thread as to the percentage of DJs who are part-time, and the suggestion that part-timers don't stay in the business long, I thought it might be interesting to do a straw poll of the members of the forum.

So, how do you do it?

How do you mean full time, 40 hrs a week or working 5 nights a week or only doing disco and not having a full time job. what are the critearies for full time v part time

Interesting, as at 23.15 29/11 it looks like full timers only last upto 5 years, or they go on forever...:D
Similar for part timers...

Part time from 1984 until 2004, and full time since 2004.

When I say full time, I mean full time in the entertainment industry, ie Quiz host AND mobile DJ...as I no longer have a daytime job.

I suppose it could be argued that that strictly speaking I'm still a part time DJ.....as I'm also a pub quiz host 5 nights a week.

It gets complicated with me. I was at college when I started in 1966. When I left college in Summer 68 went into full time summer season at Great Yarmouth (7 lunchtimes and 7 evenings!). I moved to Kent and started work in the entertainment business as a booker for an entertainment agency, opened a recording studio, managed bands and produced records. Went full time in 74 dj'ing 6 nights a week but joined Polydor as disco promotion manager in Feb 78 then freelance plugger and journalist through the 80's till I went into record retail in the 90's. Like Rob as well as dj'ing I have a second string to my bow in that I teach line dancing 3 times a week and since 2004 when I left the retail record business I have a part time job for Tesco. For most of my 41 years of dj'ing it has been my main souce of income but I have done other things and many of my other jobs have been in music or entertainment; so you tell me when I was part time or full time!

It's only since I relocated from oop north a couple of years ago that I've toyed with the idea of full-time ... and now I'm desperate to do it. The type of gigs down here are so much more variable. In Warrington where I'm from it was endless working mens / sports & social clubs, cheap as chips gigs with the occasional 'treat' of a wedding in a posh out-of-town hotel (well there aren't any in-town posh hotels :p ).

Now it's anything from kids playbarn to yacht club to marquee to any one of about 100 hotels. Yes, we have the odd social club too ;)

As soon as the level of quality work raises to the point at which I can afford to drop the day job it's a no-brainer. Obviously it's taken time to establish the brand here and next year's gigs are typically 30% more expensive than this year's so things are heading the right way.

Maybe I can make the switch on my 25th anniversary? That'd be nice! :D

I've only been DJing around 6 months now but have been self employed in various roles (band singer, solo singer, driving instructor) for around 14 years (how time flies).

I would like to DJ full time but until I can get a regular income of around £400-£500 per week I can't afford it.

Plus at the moment I have lots of spare cash from the disco's (even after putting 25% away for you-know-who!)

been djing for 17 years part time would love to go full time but there are a few factors
1 not alot of mid week work in the northeast
2 people in the northeast wont pay 250/300 pounds at gig like you lot down the smoke
3 there is alot of djs in the north east charging under a 100 pounds
