A really enjoyable gig tonight!

I've just got back from a time consuming but very enjoyable gig in the Gold Cup Suite at Sandown Park race course in Esher.

It was a fund raising ball for a childrens charity who work to keep as many kids as possible off the "at risk" register.

I set up at lunchtime, so arrived fresh at 6.45 for a 7pm start, and it finished at 1.30am. The first couple of hours was background music while the guests arrived, chatted & had their meal.

Then there was an auction to raise money for the charity. Items up for auction included a holiday for 10 to Croatia, a day in the Solent on a 60 foot yacht, a signed Chelsea shirt and 2 tickets to the X Factor final in a couple of weeks as guests of Simon Cowell (donated by Max Clifford, who was there tonight...as he supports the charity), and these tickets went for over £7,000!

After the auction there was a 12 piece band who did mostly soul covers & were very good. While they were on, I went to the suite next door where my friend was doing the disco & had a chat to him for a while.

Then I went back and did the disco for 90 minutes with a packed dance floor most of the time. The band then returned to play for the final hour.

One handy thing was that when the band came back I was able to start packing up, which saved a lot of time at the end of the evening.

All in all a very enjoyable night...and one which I guess must have raised at least £25,000 for a very worthwhile charity.

It IS a big room Tony!

It's the largest suite at Sandown Park & can accomodate up to 360 people for a dinner & dance.

The band were on a stage in front of a wall the middle of the room (it's oblong shaped), and I was on the floor next to them. The dance floor was in front of them & me, and all the tables were either side.


Well if you'd seen today's weather down here I wouldn't be surprised if Rob was right! ;) It's, erm, :thumbs_down:

I just used my normal set up (300 watts RMS each side).

The band always sound louder than the disco anyway, and I've often heard comments from partygoers about bands being too loud.

Considering there were 12 of them, they weren't as loud as I would have expected...only a little louder than me.

Ahhhh...but you have to remember it's a bit like an optical illusion...

...it's not the disco that's quiet...it's the band that's loud!

Although it's noticable in the initial changeover from the band to the disco, people soon get used to the level of the disco.

Nobody asked me to turn it up last night, so I don't think it's really a problem.

If the average age of the guests is into the late 40s the guests will virtually applaud you for "not being so flamin' loud", for ages under that, as Rob suggests, let their ears get accustomed to you playing at your accustomed volume - a good trick is to do a quick outro for the band, get a round of applause, etc., so that when you start up the last thing they hear before you start playing is some half-hearted clapping ;)

Excellent idea!

The other thing you can do to help disguise the volume difference between the band & your disco is to begin with a song that doesn't start too loud, (as I did on Saturday with Kylie's Spinning around).
