Small AMP Advice

Trying to put together a small rig for a 'one off' party. Previous comments here have pointed me in the direction of Class D and I've just picked up a pair of Class D CD15SP 350W. Probably bigger than what I need but the price was good. Now I need a small low cost amp, if I purchase from Class D I will save on shipping so I am considering either the IMG STA-700 or KAM KXR600. I would appreciate any comments on either of these choices or alternatives

I would be interested to know how much you paid for them, I am interested in a pair. Now the bad news, I would go for KAM1000, at least. The two you have mentioned will not drive them adequately, as you will have to push them.

Have a look at Warrior, some folk on here rate them highly. The DA-1000 is size you need. Also Numark Dimension 3 fits the bill.

Ahh so the KAM KXR1000 @ 340W RMS would be a better 'fit' then? I dont want to push them, but don't need the full 700w if you know what I mean? Anybody use KAM, how would you rate them?

As for the price I paid, well without giving too much away in case Class D pop in here, they are popping up on ebay (from Class D) with biding starting from sometimes as low as £115. I been out bid at £160 previously, but didn't pay that much this time.

Oooh, the top of the range model! I'd be interested to know how they sound, as I've been drooling at the look of them for a while & hav both the other models in the CD15 range (a lot cheaper if you haven't already bought the SPs)

Cost. The fact that some of us like to have the amp vloume control within reach. Ludditism. Mistrust. Cost. Flexibility. Not having all your eggs in one basket.

Those of us who love the lunatics at Class-D, and are fortunate enough to be within sensible reach, know that the price stated on display is not necessarily the price you pay, nudge nudge, wink wink. A trip in person is worth it, just to see what's in the vast shed behind the offices!

Last time I went to see them, traffic had held us up, so we rang to ask what time they closed. " What time can you get here?" was the humorous answer!:D Lovely fellas, ( and one member of the female persuasion when I was last there)

Detractors of Class-D point out that they are lower efficiency than " Big-Name" speakers, and thus need more power pushing in to achieve similar sound levels. In my experience, this tends to be the case, and the KXR1000 is by no means too big for them. As we all know, thrashing a small amp is worse than running a bigger amp at half throttle. I know it's pushing the cost up, but personally I would get the 1500 ( or equivalent )if it were me. Kam amps had a poor reputation at one time, but the Class-D boffins appear to know who is making them at the moment, and have confidence in them.

Purchased a pair of 128's a couple of months ago and are very good. However three of the bolts/screws that hold in the speakon sockets have shook loose and been lost. I have sent a message this weekend to see if any spares available.

I will buy again though, want a pair of bass bins when I get a bigger vehicle.

Running the speakers via a Audiohead 1000 (520W into 4 ohm). Running stereo I am really flat out with this combination (just going into clip sometimes) and wished I had gone for a bigger amp and speakers TBO.

Im after an amp that can give 600 watts rms at 8 ohm per side.


Just orded a new 5 string bass guitar and im getting prices for the bass cabs and amps but im finding it a bit hard to find an amp that has these specs.

Any help would be grand.

It's a New Years Eve thing so:
1. prices are high,
2. anybody any good is booked,
3. they wouldn't be a good as me (lol), and
4. I'll end up with the gear which I hopefully have some future plans for..........:)

Not as such, but more than one of us have the same make with a C-Audio badge on, and rate them highly.

Edit: I think that Tony Scott has one of these, or one size smaller, and rates it for driving bass bins ( hard)

I am not sure that technically your speakers are big enough ( 250w aren't they, as opposed to 350w for the 15's? ). I would suspect that any similar screws/bolts will work fine. Looks like a trip to B & Q is in order.

Yeah I think they are 250/300w. So maybe either add a pair of bass bins as well or get some 15" and another amp for bigger venues.

They are going to drop some nuts/bolts in the post, so thats good.
