Hi all. Following the call by Creature to our After Sales Service guys, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves and offer you all some lines of communication. (As indeed did Creature).

I'm Rob from GCI Technologies Ltd UK. GCI is the umbrella company that looks after Gemini, Cortex and iKey Audio, hence GCI :) I promise to keep the sales BS at a minimum here, (unless you need specific info).

From the beginning Cortex has been an entirely separate Research & Development and Production from Gemini, Hence the GCI umbrella. The service manager that Creature spoke to is however able to service all three brands. It is a bit too time consuming for him to monitor the forum and make regular posts - so I hope that you all will bear with us coming on the site on a "time to time" basis? We are constantly on e-mail though and will be happy to respond to any issues that you have. It is also worth mentioning that a dedicated online Cortex Support exists in the USA and I can also get one of the guys over there to call you if you get really stuck.

Cortex has been under development since April 2004 so we have been working on this for considerably longer than most! All software based products will have issues and these can vary according to the peripherals. Hence the updates and improvements. We write all our own software in house and therefore as issues are reported, they can be addressed. We are proud of the fact that all Cortex models are virtually issue free now and customers can really look forward to dumping their CD Cases at last.

It is a shame that Creature might well have a machine with a hardware fault. It is unusual and in those cases, we are more than happy to take care of it for him. From our point of view, Cortex is a new(ish) brand and although it leads the field, (yes it really does honest), we do know that it needs to prove itself. So, we really are here to help.

I'm not certain, but I think I may have spoken to you at BPM?? Thanks for joining the forum.

My HDC1000 problem seems to have resolved having eliminated the random VBR encoded mp3s in my collection. I recreated the problem at home - the cortex was "re-setting" (no power loss - it was reverting to the "just switched on" stage) in the last 30 seconds of the VBR files ... intermittantly. Playout would stop abruptly. It took me a while to work it out, but I am certain other users will come accross this issue.

I've placed all my files in alphabetical folders in the root directory and have FAT32 formatted the drives for good measure! I had to download a free utility to do this as Windows XP will only format in FAT32 if the disc is smaller than 32gb.

"Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool ..."

Hope my experience is helpful to others.

Numark user myself, but each to his own, and manufacturer reps are always welcome on forums like this. Be prepared for a deluge :D It'll soon dry up.

Seriously, this place would make a great read for anyone involved in requirements gathering for R+D... and not just limited to Cortex threads. It's a mine of useful information that should help you develop product that people actually want, and avoid developing product that they don't.

Bridge, no that was one of the other guys. Glad you sorted it but I'm going to forward your solution to Guido and see if he has anything else to add.
I'm sure that I will have bumped in to several of you in the past though - I've been around a while....

Also you should try to keep the amount of music files in any one folder down to under 999 songs.

And of course defragment your drive regularly

just after the last update :

a, i list my genres 60s , 70s , 80s etc ....... non of these are now recognised?? so i can't for example find all my 80s tracks if im doing a theme night??

b, was supposed to fix the getting -> when wanting a track listing from a particular artist ...... i'm still getting this , not all the time but on some artists Madonna being one.

the stock answer i have recieved 3 times from cortex is the update will be available by the end of the week ...... this has never been true yet?

dont get me wrong i do like the cortex and it survived the drop the unit from 4ft test very well indeed ,but obviously it is a little bit annoying particularly the genre thing.

We are working on the new update in the States and we were beta testing
2.3.9a at BPM. Sorry it's not become available yet but it's very important that updates are as close to 100% as is possible otherwise it's all a waste of time. It is imminent and if you've registered your unit on the Cortex site, it will be e-mailed to you automatically. What happens is, that updates being written are issued to a panel of beta testers who are located worldwide and they in turn use it and report their findings and any issues back to the author. There's nothing like having actual DJ's using the gear to find any problems! Let's get the update done asap for your machine and then address the genre issue if still necessary.
