Which speakers to get

Hi guys,

I'd like to upgrade my current speakers and was wandering if you guys could advise. they would be used for mobile disco purposes in mdedium sized venues up about 70 - 120 people max along with a behringer ep2500 amp so no need for actives yet. I've got a max budget of £400 so i guess i was hoping for a pair of pretty decent sounding speakers, not the best obviously but somthing good to replace my old skytecs.

Of course i'm sure theres loads of others out there so i'm to any of your suggestions.
i'm saving up to eventually buy a 2nd hand db sub 15 to go with these, but until then they'll have to be used as full range so somthing with good bass responce would be ideal.

The Mackies look a good buy , think their list price is very high, you could get actives for that, but still look the best bet to me .

I'd definately recommend the Mackies.

I've been using them for a good few months now after they were recommended to me by a number of forum members.

They also appear to be becoming the industry standard...which must say something.

Their list price is very high at about £800, but if you shop around you can get them for well under £300.

I paid about £260 for mine.

took my set of the actives out tonight and when i put them on my jaw just hit the floor. ( dont be fooled by the 10 inch cone they will match most 12" speakers for performance )

What we use with an EP2500, and IMHO they sound absolutely terrific. Easily fill a 150 people venue and they are full range with good bass. We have now matched them with (at the moment just a single) CW 15" bass bin, but don't always take it out.

I had a pair of Peavey (sorry) rx 500s I think they were ??? never had a single issue with them at all very good speakers and you can pick them up for around 2-300 .

IMHO whatever make you have, if you do not intend to add bass bins soon, then I too would recommend 15" drivers.( Unless you intend to do lots of Karaoke, when 12" seems preferable, but still 15" subs, or 10"tops, and 12" subs.)

Can't recommend the Peavey Messenger Pro-15's as great all-round budget speakers - loud, reasonably compact and sound really good across the range. I only add a sub for the bigger rooms. Around £220 a pair.

But if you're a wimp like Rob you might not get along with the "teardrop handles" :D :boxer2: (he's never going to live that down)

According to Autoroute, you are 80miles south of Class-D, a nice canter up the M1, and I for one would go to see them. They will demo every speaker they make if you want, and they will really wind them up! You will probably be unable to stop them demoing the 2.6Kw and 4.5Kw systems also, even though you have told them you cant use/afford one!:eek: :D

Hello, just noticed you live near me---:D

I also use Pro15 tops for small to medium gigs and they sound ok to me--

You could listen to mine when im doing a sound test--thats usually a Friday when the wifes gone shopping:D

Then I could hear what a Behringer Amp sounds like:D

Well as mentioned in the thread before... you want to go to your local sound and light retailer and here some speakers. When i upgraded to turbosound i was lucky enough to take the speakers out on the road with me before i bought them... Was good because i could hear how they sounded with my voice through them and the sound quality.

My advice is don't buy cheap as you will only end up replacing in a few years so you may aswell buy something that is going to last you 10 - 20 years

I'm not sure that would happen tbh. Unless you spend a lot of money, I can't see the cabs lasting that long and sounding as good as the day you bought them.

I'm not sure that a lot of DJs have enough longevity either...;)

I have recently bought some mackies c300z and evan thou i havent fixed them in properly yet they sound fantastic an i aslo got them at £174 each from turnkeys which i thought was a very good price so i snapped 4 up.

Thou i have been looking on there website and cant see them now , might be worth giving them a bell. You wont go wrong with the mackies, good all rounder

If you read the posts, I did indeed chide Steve ( and myself also) for our unashamed backing for this brand. In our defence I would point out that one of the biggest reasons for this advocacy is how good they are for the price, not how impressive the badge is!

Thanks for all of the advise guys its been really useful. The hard part now i guess is narrowing it down and getting a chance to hear them for myself.
Still open to more suggestions if there is any but i've got a much better idea of what i could get so thanks alot!

Well, I recently decided to purchase a backup amp for the big PA , and it would double as a bigger amp for the subs on the other rig. Now here's the best bit:- If I get a pair of 15SP's as well, the small rig suddenly can have my existing pair of subs, plus a pair of 215's as subs, 1400w of Bass. The top comes from the SP's plus the other pair of 215's, 1400w of top. And I can sell Rob the Eurosys 3's, cos they've got proper handles! Sorted.:D :D :D
