Scared the life out of me

Last night (friday) I was DJing in a venue doing my Indie Night.
They have a UV Cannon in there which faces where the DJ sets up and it's up quite high.

Anyway, it's around 9.30pm, not many people in the venue at the time but the venue owner is standing underneath it enjoying one of the tunes I am playing ('To cut a long story short' by The Caszals') when all of a sudden there is a huge BANG and the venue is filled with light. It was really blinding and shone straight into my eyes and I was blinded for a second or two.

Has anyone else had one of these go BANG before?
At first I thought it might have been one of my lights or even worse, my amps but luckily it wasn't. The owner leapt about 10ft in the air but was ok. The grill on the UV cannon caught most of the stained glass.

I've heard of these going before. And with the same effects! Really not good.

not heard one of those go but on this subject we had a 50w halogen go last night in our hall ...... it completely exploded into 1000 pieces !!!! my 7 year old daughter was just walking underneath it at the time ..... as you say it scared the life out of her she wasnt hurt but took a good hour for her to stop shaking.

It's not the first time I've heard about those UV Cannons exploding. They sound like a disaster waiting to happen. :eek:

I've had one of these go on me very scary, I had it sitting on top of a speaker cab it shot broken glass about 20 feet had there been anyone in front of it they would have been hurt without doubt, so I don't use it anymore. :eek:

I've heard about this on other forums too.

Not good. Use a couple of tubes instead.

I had a 250W hallogen lamp go bang in one of the hallucinations a while back & that was bad enough. Biggest bang I've ever heard from a light (on par with a pistol shot) It went with such force it shattered the lens.

I have heard that it's mainly the 400watt uv cannons that explode.

You would think with this happening they would be recalled or banned.

or a grill.... I know the standard par cans have to have a grill in front of the lamp for the same reason to catch the glass if it breaks.

It seems to be a common thing for these cannpns to explode, I know of several that have exploded. Don't think they are safe.

On the subject of lamps blowing, one went in my iColour 4 on Saturday night. About halfway through the night, the power suddenly cut off. My lights were on a seperate socket, but it was a small room and all sockets were on the same circuit. Had no power for about 19 mins while the staff tried to find the consumer unit.

When the power came back on I noticed a lamp gone in one of my iColours. Hope that does not happen everytime a lamp goes in them.

Hang on... are you saying that your lamp blowing tripped a circuit? Are you using an RCD? If not, I suggest you do for safety reasons if nothing else... If you are, get it tested!

My lighting ring at home will trip when a lamp blows. It's the sudden surge, I think it shorts for a split second, so it's nothing to worry about safety wise.
Just flippin inconvenient!

Yep, must admit it did concern me slightly. I do use plug in RCD's in all sockets I plug into. But the sockets I used on Sat night had an RCD built in so did not use mine. The lights are only a couple of months old and were pat tested about a week after purchase.

The RCD in the socket did not trip, but the RCD in the consumer unit did, which I thought was a bit strange.

If a halagen bulb used for household lighting blows at home it always trips the RCD in the consumer unit so presumed it was the same as that.

Possibly, have no idea why else it would have tripped though. Never usualy have problems. Thinking about it, the christmas tree lights and mobile bar equipment were on the same circuit though.
