I've recently heard that a crime on the increase is for people to follow DJs home from mobile discos to see where they live & where they keep the gear overnight, and then to break in & steal it.

This happened to someone I know last weekend when the gear was left in his car overnight in a locked garage, and I've heard of 2 other occasions where the same thing has occurred.

The 3 cases in question were all in Surrey, but I'm guessing it's not just restricted to this neck of the woods...so be on your guard.

this was happing last year (About the same time) make sure you lock you doors on your way home as well cos thats another thing that was happing earlier this year, you stop at the lights at 3 in the morning and some nasty bit of work jacks your car/van

Really. I was thinking about renting some space to lock up my gear plus taking out insurance to cover my dj gear. But if this is going on at the moment then im not to sure about it now. ???

I take it the lock up wasn't in a built up area or he didn't have an alarm fitted?

Now here's a couple of ides which are probably crazy/stupid, but then again i'm sure your gear is worth a lot to you. First have a device installed on all doors and windows so that when the alarm is triggered all possible exit routes are blocked. Second, I know modern alarm systems are very loud, but extra volume would help get peoples attention and distract the thief. In other words have an amp and speakers and cd player wired up so they activate when the alarm goes off

I told you they were crazy/stupid ideas but then this is some peoples livelyhood we're talking about.

I strongly agree with you on this 1 pal. May seem a very daft idea to some folks but hey to me, this would definitely deter thiefs' from stealing everything.


If you really wanted to take it to the extreme, get an outdoor CCTV camera and somehow link a Martin Mac 2000 to it, you'll get a super bright picture of the thief :Laugh: :Laugh: :Laugh:

I haven't been to the guy's house, so I'm not too sure...

...but I DO know it was a locked garage attached to the side of his house, and as he didn't hear anything, I assume he didn't have an alarm.

So you'd seriously think about locking a burglar, now desperate and quite possibly armed inside your house? I'd rather just pay the £200ish per year for insurance! Its only money afterall, you can't come back from the dead if said burgular shoots you!

I know they say that if someone wants to nick your stuff that badly, they will be able to do it but I think they'd have a pretty hard job getting mine. I won't say too much but let's just say they'd have a real job on their hands what with all the locks etc and....it's not even at my location.

I think that is a pretty important part of security. With forums like this that are open to guests etc (there's nothing stopping a 'fake DJ' joining up to obtain details) and all of our companies details on our websites and other websites too...it would be pretty easy to find out where people are and take a chance on there being gear there too so that's why I don't keep it near me.

i always drive with my door locked too. Also at xmas time i put my gear in to storage until new year although i have a secure garage you cannot ever be too safe cos you always hear year after year about djs having their garage or trailers broken in to.
For £50 for a month i can be certain my equipment is safe and i can get at it when i need to.

I don't think it's that daft. There are so many alarms going off, probably 95% false, that they are often ignored, so why not have something that makes a different loud noise???
A good deterent is a stoopidly loud internal siren that defens the git if they manage to get in. Something around 120~130db should be enough to make them run in pain........
Also why not put an internal sounder inside your house? That way you know it's your alarm and you ain't going to sleep through it!

Absolutely, well the camera! A recording camera will give the police the best possible description of the person you won't see.
A mac maybe not ideal:rolleyes: but bright PIR type security lights will not only give light for the camera, but is also a deterent as the thief is suddenly floodlit:D they won't want to be seen.
