woah Charlie..... there a time for drinking and surely being paid to dj at someone's special day isn't one of them? Especially that amount of booze! Was this why you fell or just an accident? Imagine if you had pulled the bride in with you by mistake by grabbing for a your balance? all the great tunes, lights and mixing in the world wouldn't make up for that!
I agree with Ian, although I drink at gigs I take it slowly and usually Guinness OR wine. I never mix the 2, as they say 'never mix the grape and the grain' LOL
As I said, I don't drink at gigs (bar a pint) and I wouldn't actively encourage it BUT the family/B&G were literally forcing it down. They really didn't mind and I wouldn't of touched any booze had they not persisted.
I remember them saying in the meeting - We don't mind you having a drink.

But what about other potential future clients who may have been put off by you swigging a bottle of champagnes behind the deck? don't get me wrong, I like a good beer or wine myself and have been know to enjoy a lock-in but I try and portray a professional manner behind the decks.Quote:

I'd say the majority of us have all had a few beers whilst working at some point or another (unless you're teetotal of course). I've done it myself but it's always been at pub residencies etc when I can leave the equipment overnight and where it's really me DJing for friends and regulars. I've never done it at a private function before.
We've done this subject a number of times so I don't want to repeat myself or what others have said before but unless the customer was holding you down and you had a funnel in your mouth, I don't know how you can say that they were literally forcing it down your neck. It's obvious that the customer wanted you to have a good time too and that's fair enough but you can still do it when you haven't had a drink.....can't you?
Don't you have a 'work mode' and a 'socialising mode'? If I want to have a drink, I generally have Monday - Thursday to have one if I want one. As soon as it gets to when I have to do my work, that's it...no alcohol. I don't care whether that offends anyone at a gig or not, it's my job. Once you start driving and don't have others to rely on etc etc you will soon realise that a drink is not important.
Anyway...that's the same old, same old....The important thing here which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is that firstly, you were drunk enough to fall over. The main things for me are that (a) You hired in equipment for the gig. That could have been damaged easily and you would have ended up more or less paying for the night out....(b) You said that you were embarassed by the state of the two guys helping you out etc....In my opinion, drinking and getting into a state that you fall over on someone's special day is just as bad, if not worse. All they were doing was helping you set up the equipment...Ok, your description of them wasn't good BUT I doubt if anyone would be bothered about it because they were setting up.
The other thing I see in your review is that they paid you £600.00. Nice little job I guess but then again, you hired in equipment (how much was that?), you went in and set up for 3 hours and then (if I have read it correctly?), DJ'd from 6.30pm - 03.00am. No wonder they wanted to give you drink, they got a cheap deal didn't they.
Maybe it's the fact that you work in the week too Charlie and you have the luxury of living at home aswell....It just seems like you don't take it that seriously really. I hope you don't take offence to what I've said and I hope people can see that I am not picking on you because I am not.
No offence taken. :) I knew what was coming when I wrote it. I could have cut/chopped certain aspects out, but what's the point? I think my style is different to others on here - rightly or wrongly, Saturday night - it worked.
The kit was hired from the chap with the Van. He didn't charge me anything for the hire.
I should have explained the falling over properly. It was a dark country lane with pot holes etc every few meters. Admittedly, the drink didn't help but I tripped on one of the pot holes which made me fall in the bush.
It was a weird gig - different to the rest. The couple, their family and their guests were so accepting. You'll see by the videos and pictures I post tonight by what I mean.
They wanted someone fun, outgoing and keen to get involved - which I did. Like the dad said, the best part of my performance was falling over, it's something they'll remember for ever...The crazy blonde kid who kept the dancefloor full, played all the tunes they requested and then joined in with the party. It was my decession to play on - I told them I didn't want any more money.
She's just text me a more serious testimonial for me to use on my website.
On Sunday's wedding I felt more like a service provider doing a job. On Saturday I was not only providing a service but felt part of their special day...more of a acquittance?
I reckon my footage will clear things up. It's hard to explain in words but hopefully you'll see. :)
If it worked for you Charlie, and the guests were happy enough, then that is all that matters. It is not something I would do now(have done, only once in the past).

Great gig last night. It was a wedding at a venue around 5 miles away from me. I set the Uplighting up on Thursday evening and due to the number of guests attending the wedding, I wasn't able to set up until the turnaround after the speeches etc.
It was all running behind time so the 7.00pm access for a 7.30pm start didn't happen and it was just after 8.00pm when the guests left the room. I was set up and ready to go just after 8.30pm (a sweaty mess afterwards though!).
Bit of a slow start to the evening really as the weather was lovely and the venue has a really nice outside area so a lot of the guests were outside for a while so played background music and some 60's stuff that was requested by people in the room. First dance(s) were at 9.15pm (originally planned for 8.15pm) and they were 'Love You More' by JLS, 'She's like the wind' by Patrick Swayze and then 'Rockin' allover the world' by Status Quo. They all worked really well and because of the Status Quo track, I thought I'd go into Bon Jovi (a lot earlier than I usually would) and it was a mediocre reaction with lots of people heading outside again.
I thought it was going to be one of those gigs where it had the potential to be a cracker but would never get there. I need'nt have worried as later it was a full on party. A number of guests had travelled down from Scotland and there were 3 songs that had been requested by them in advance and they all went down really well with the dancefloor packed....
Scotland the Brave / The Gay Gordons and Dashing White Sergeant. An Indie set followed with current chart stuff and some 80's classics and then a Ska set and before I knew it, it was 11.50pm. Last song of the night was 'Don't stop believing' by Journey and everyone joined in.
Great night in the end.
