I would run the requests pass the B&G rather than just going ahead and playing them. And if you think that something might not work then convey that in a nice tactful way - you're the expert after all and you want them to have the best night possible!!!
The B&G had compiled all of the request slips into one long request list for me, so they'd seen them all ahead of time. Just an odd night...didn't seem to fire. People left the dance floor to Mr Brightside...don't remember that happening too often!Quote:

Though I agree on principle, I have had quite a few people speak to me after I had played their request in a similar situation and tell me it made their night, so it's not always about the dance floor.Quote:

I certainly don't judge the success of the night on just the dance floor and I'm not sure clients do either TBH. A few non danceable requests wouldn't hurt anyone and any DJ who knew what they are doing would be able to announce the fact that it was a special request for great Uncle Bert and get the floor busy again afterwards.Quote:

Set up in the morning so all I had to do was be there for 7.30pm to start. On arrival I could hear lots of singing and when I walked into the car park, one of the caterering staff was outside laughing. She said "You'll have a laugh with this lot, they are all trollied already!". As well as the silly amounts of champagne, wine and german beer that they had bought with them and drunk gallons of, they were also downing small glasses of this red stuff which was 90% proof. I don't know what it was but the majority were all drinking it during the night.
The guys who run the bar at the venue (walk in job), weren't impressed. When I spoke to them at the end of the night they said that they had taken less than £200.00 because of the amount of booze that the wedding party and guests had taken.
Anyway, the night itself was a classic. Lots of dancing and mainly to 70's, 80's, Indie and Rock. I used the Mackies on stands last night and I must admit, I did have to keep an eye on them quite a lot as there were people stumbling about in the latter part of the evening. The Grooms Dad also had a silly idea about using a bubble machine. He had asked me early on if it was ok and I said it would be a bit dangerous because of the wooden floor. He went ahead and turned it on anyway and within minutes, someone had slipped over. I actually saw him have a giggle until he went down himself.....The bubble machine was quickly disposed of.
First dance was 'She' by Elvis Costello and that was followed by 'All I Want Is You' by Barry Louis Polisar (from the film 'Juno'). The dancefloor was busy most of the night and the Indie and Rock set went down a treat. I also played 'Lemon Tree' by Fools Garden which went down very well and a funny moment was when I stitched up the Groom with a track. I announced that it was his favourite song in the world (the Bride told me to announce it) and I played Ozone 'Dragostea Din Tei'. I didn't see anyone sitting down when that was played.
Finished the night off with 'Never Forget' by Take That and that was it. The Bride couldn't thank me enough and ran over to cuddle me. Then she called over her twin sister and they both posed with me for a photo. That was the beginning of a bit of mayhem as all of a sudden, lots of other people wanted to do the same. The Bridesmaids all came over and cuddled me and posed too and then a bunch of the german guests too. It was nice but embarassing.
Lastly, one young lady who was very nice asked me for my number. I said "Oh, are you getting married too?"...she said "No". I said "What type of function are you having?" (obviously assuming that she wanted to book me) and she said "I'm not having anything....I just want your number". It was embarassing.
Had a 9 hour disco in a private residence yesterday, 3 hour for a child`s birthday then a break and then an adult party in the evening. It turned out to be 10 hours which I was grateful for the extra cash, Then the extra hour was done they then offered me £100 for another hour, Remember I just done 10 hours and totally said NO, Its funny how people cant take no for an answer, I didnt do it as I was so shattered.
I managed to take 1 pic during the whole 10 hours.
Also picked up 3 weddings and an engagement so was worth the hours

Awkward gig for me on Monday night. I'd just settled down to so some work at around 1730, when I got a call from one of my regular hotels in a panic. They had a wedding in, whose DJ had no-showed. The hotel had recommended me to cover it, but the couple only had a budget of £150 for a 6 hour gig. Really tricky, as there was no way I was going out for that, and explained that I would've quoted well over double that. However, I didn't want to be seen as a mercenary pig, holding out for more money from people in a desperate situation. As it was, I settled at £275, and was please to help them out.
It got a little trickier, as while I was setting up, the booked DJ arrived 90 minutes late, and started kicking off about still getting his fee!!
In the end, only about 40 or so guests, in a pretty awkward mood as they'd obviously had an upsetting evening. Good night in the end though, really nice couple, and I picked up another gig from them in October (at my full fee....!!).
