It was my mates birthday party at my local last night (still a paid gig for me though as the pub booked me as a surprise for him).
Local band Instincts Of Nature played and did a great set (they're sort of Foo Fighterish for want of a better description).
Played Korn, SOAD, Audioslave, Hollywood Undead type stuff for the bands followers amongst the Ska, Mod and Indie tunes.
There was an optional Two-Tone dress theme and quite a few people made the effort (well mainly the mods and skins!). I bought a large piece of black and white checked cloth to front my Ultimax and it looked really good, definitely going to use it again for suitable gigs.
Jim's girlfriend had made 'Jim masks' for everyone to wear when he came in, it really freaked him out seeing 40 Jim's staring at him (and I played 'Jim'll Fix It' as he entered).
All in all a great night, and a surprising number of passing punters stayed with us because they loved the Ska and 2-Tone I was playing (quite a few of the older ones were telling me that they used to be Mods/Skins in their youth).
Still don't get it. Surely it would just to be easier to politely say that you have no interest in returning to the venue when they asked for a card?Quote:

good gig: Corabar Steve suggested I put a report on the Rock n Roll disco so here it is.
I was able to setup nice and early and run through some of the classic rock and roll songs I would be playing on the night. I had a lot of lists of songs which I was able to scan through before the start of the disco to give me a good head start in knowing what songs I would be playing through the night. I have to say once the disco got going the dancefloor was pretty much full for nearly all the night. I couldn't go wrong everyone was enjoying themselves in what was an older crowd of course!
I didn't just stick to rock and roll as it was a 50's and 60's night too. I blended a nice mixture of upbeat, jiving and smoochy songs.
The only one disappointment was the rock and roll quiz I had prepared. I was happy with the questions I had prepared. There was a trivia, music, picture and multiple choice rounds but at the end of it the overall consensus was it might have been a bit too long and difficult. I gave it my best shot but I think I might stay clear of quizes in the future. It took a long time to prepare and I tried not to make it too easy or difficult but I just felt that it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped! Maybe the crowd could have been a bit more knowledgable on this era of music but it's hard to say.
Back to the disco though and I had some requests throughout the night and in the end my revision for an era of music I am not as familiar with and with help from members of the forum... I can safely say it was a success :) :beer1:

Last night was No 3 of 3 for the weekend and went well.
The couple actually got married abroad earlier in the week and this was the party for all those that couldn't make it / didn't get invited to the actual Wedding :D
It was a nice relaxed evening with a 7.30pm start and background music while the Casino was on. They also had giant Jenga & Connect 4 to keep the guests amused.
The couple booked me last year at a wedding fayre but were also at a Wedding I did earlier this year as guests so knew what they'd get and were mega happy so much so they've returned the feedback form already with the following comments:
Some people were shocked at how much we chose to pay for a dj - but knowing that the dj makes or breaks a party, we were happy to place our trust in Spirits High. The service was first class; from initial contact, to meeting Paul to discuss the playlist, to the event itself.

Musically it was a bit of chart , a bit of cheese and some more unusual stuff like Offspring & Reel Big Fish.
The end to another weekend of more happy punters, think I've earned that pint tonight at the local ;)
Wish I'd had more notice for a gig I did Sat night to help a mate out, would have done the same ! It was a guys 40th and he said he loves ska & reggae. Already had a load as well as a couple of mixes. Long narrow room, so not much room for dancing. Played the mixes while people were chatting, drinking & eating. Then a few ska & reggae tunes from the 80's. Then played some more recent stuff, IGAF, yeah3X, but the one that got everyone dancing (as much as they could given the lack of room) was Valerie !Quote:

Really good gig last night. Easily one of the top gigs I have done this year. It was a wedding at a lovely venue just outside town for a very nice couple.
It was one of those nights where everything flew by because the dancefloor was busy all the time and the guests were well up for it.
Had a bit of a panic early on though. I knew I had the first dance 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon & Garfunkel and it was on my system and external HD with VDJ. I cue'd it up on VDJ early on for backup and noticed that it was a live version. I checked on the Denon and it was the same version on there too. I always ask my customers if there are specific versions of songs that they would like and these customers just asked for the track.
Anyway, I wanted to make sure everything would be ok and was prepared to set up a playlist and drive back home (only 7 miles) if I had to. I then realised that even if I did get back home, the track would just be duplicated and still be the live version. I chatted with the Bride & Groom about it as it was still early and the first dance wasn't until later in the evening. The Groom had his I-Phone with him and the track was on there. He checked it and it was exactly the same as the version I had. "That's the one then!" he said and I was relieved. They said they were both impressed with the attention to detail and willingness I showed to make sure that they got exactly what they wanted. By the way, I did ask the venue if they had Wi-Fi....they didn't. It wouldn't have made much difference though as I stripped the laptop down.
After the first dance, there was a bit of a surprise. It had been planned in advance between myself and the Groom and only us two and the best man knew what was going to happen. Straight after the first dance, I handed the Groom the radio mic and he then proceeded to sing 'Just the way you are' by Barry White as he danced with his Bride. He was surrounded by guests on the dancefloor who loved it. It sounds very cheesy and you may think that the sick bucket was out but it was actually really cool.
Lots of requests throughout the night. Some very well behaved boys who loved Michael Jackson and also break dancing and it was really nice when they came up to me towards the end and shook my hand and said thanks.
Gave out 3 cards for potential weddings in the future too.
Last song of the night was 'Greatest Day' by Take That and it went down better than I could've imagined. Every single person joined the Bride & Groom on the dancefloor and a massive circle surrounded them. As it got to the part of the song where it goes full on...everyone started bouncing and clapping and it was really cool. A shivers up the spine moment. We had also planned that towards the end of the song, I would announce that the Bride & Groom would be leaving the building. Their car would be waiting outside. It worked perfectly. I announced it, the circle parted and they walked through it and towards the exit. Everyone clapped and cheered and as the Bride was on her way to the exit, she quickly turned round, ran over to me in tears and said "We can't thank you enough, it was perfect".
That made my night. Very happy today.
No sleep again and off to Bournemouth shortly once I have packed away everything. Have a good weekend.
Makes it worthwhile when you get gigs like that, well done.
I arrived at the venue slightly before Tammy and met mum number one - Emma and between us we sorted out where I was to set up and then she set about making the first brew of the party.
Tammy arrived and we finished off the checks and we were ready to go.
The Two “Stars of the day” (William & James) arrived with mum number two (Rachel) and after a quick chat with them a fun - loud - silly party was requested so that was all sorted with Tammy and the party was ready to go.
After getting the two chaps up to receive their special birthday certificates we then did what we do best - causing chaos and fun with our party dances and silliness.
We then did a little disco dancing competition and I was very impressed with their dancing abilities, winners chosen and rewarded with their prize and sweeties.
Interval time which was followed by the cakes.
Part two was an equally frantic session with more party dances and even more mucking about from me, much to the amusement of the children and indeed the adults.
But as ever time to finish can round all to quick and it was time for our closing party dance which everyone joined in with.
