Good Gig, Bad Gig.

A really easy night last night for me but also an excellent one.
It was a 13th Birthday gig for 45 girls. All current chart stuff and a couple of action songs. They absolutely loved it and it was very enjoyable. The time flew by.
It was in a hall with a very high stage so I put the Mackies on the floor of the stage rather than the stands. The bass that was vibrating on the wooden stage was mad, especially when I played 'Bonkers'.

It was funny aswell because I played all of the requests that were given to me in advance and on the night itself (lots of One Direction, Katy Perry etc) and 95% of them were upbeat and had everyone dancing (and screaming when their request came on), but it was the Ed Sheeran track 'A Team' that got everyone singing along and it was really cool.

Finished the night off with Steps, DJ Casper and finally Glee's version of 'Don't Stop Believing'. Parents were very happy and I gave out a few cards too that Mums asked for. I reckon I'll get some more gigs out of this. All the girls attend the same girls school and the area is quite well off. This was a well paid gig and was a welcome change from the usual work.

Did a 40th Birthday in Pub last night. About 70 people, mixture of ages all in fancy dress so were up for dancing early on! Dancefloor was on and off until after 10ish.

Loads of fun, mixture of 80s, 90s mainly played with some requests thrown in - didn't have a couple of songs - and had some weird ones too which would have killed the floor, but I guess you cannot please all..

Finished just after 11 with Grease Megamix ;-) had a round of applause and a booking for next Feb. So in all, great night. You always seem to appreciate it more the next day!

I had a 13th last night in a village hall with just over 100, mostly girls. Many were outside most of the evening 8 until 11.30pm but there were times when the hall was packed. My son did mist of the dj work and the birthday girl had asked for little use of mic but lots of mixing. He loved it and surprised me with his mixing. We used 2 Warlocks and a multi-clour laser not forgetting starcloth with 3 led par 56 behind.

Last night was alans 18th birthday part.i started the night of,then alans band kaos theory did a set.this was followed by dj jordan who did a hard dance\house\dubstep set,then i finished of the last 30 minutes.

It was nice to get a break and watch everything else that was going on along with socialising with my family,whom ive not seen for a while.Now that alan is the legal age,i will be letting him treat me to a few drinks this year at bpm.

3 superb weddings down and one more teens party to go later today. Then will try and condense them down into some sort of gig report:D :D

Easy gig last night, It was a reunion for the members of Merrydown Cider.
I turned up about 1730 for a 1900 start and was asked to play background music an will be told when to start the disco set off. 2130 comes still on background music and I`m outside enjoying the hog roast, 200 guests there are now starting to complain about the lack of disco, Im apologising and telling them to see the event organiser, then 45 mins before my finish time ( 2300) he says " You can start the disco now" so £300 for a 45 min set where most danced was good for me, I must say that they were such a lovely crowd to play for.

I had an excellent - But tiring weekend. Despite probably one of the most embarassing moments that could happen to a DJ.

Friday, I was DJing at Bar Mango in Reading - I played a Tech House/Techno set and loved every second (it's my specialist genre) However, I didnt get to see my bed till 5:30am and had little sleep before Saturday Nights Wedding.

Last nights Wedding was really enjoyable (for most parts) I played alongside a cover band called The Committed. 10 piece band who were all really good fun (endless amounts of banter before we could gain access) The day was running behind schedule and I didnt start until 9:15pm!!! I played some current chart for approx 30 mins and the Bride and Groom were invited to cut the cake, we were then supposed to go straight to the first dance. I cued the first and second dance (in traktor) and was just about to introduce the B&G - Turned to laptop to see a BIG BLACK SCREEN - I was devasted!

I had bought a second back up laptop and set this up immediately. Picked up the MIC and APOLOGISED PROFUSELY to the guests and said I'd be back in 5-10 mins to do the first dance.

This prompted the groom to come over and use the MIC whilst I was sorting the disaster. He asked his guests to sing the first dance (I should of done this myself in hindsight, but panic mode took over) I then introduced them both to the floor, and the guests started singing. A nice touch, that I cant really remember to appreciate. When I was back up and running, we did the first and second dance PROPERLY - In the end my primary laptop didn't fail (its only 2-3 months old) I had foolishly knocked the AC adaptor out and the battery went FLAT!!!

I got over the event pretty quickly and soon made up for it. It turned out to be a great night. It would of been perfect had I not been such a tool and knocked out the AC adapter. I dont think I'll allow that to ever happen again!

..... to make things even worse - Gary (Shakermaker) was in attendance to see this epic fail in all it's glory. :) :) :)

What I do is configure the laptop so it's is noticeably dimmer when running on battery only - you can see straight away then if it's become unplugged (and only takes a few seconds to reconfigure it to full brightness if you need to use it on battery at any time).

Ok, a quick review of this but from a guests point of view.
Firstly, I have literally just got off the phone from the Groom who said EVERYTHING was perfect! That means YOU aswell Mike. He actually made a point of saying that the first dance incident actually worked really well because it ended up being something different and unique!

The first dance was 'Your Song' by Elton John. Having had to endure it many times over the years at Karaoke nights (of which the Groom is a big fan by the way), I knew the words. The Groom asked everyone surrounding the dancefloor to start singing so I kicked it off by shouting out "It's a little bit funny....." and then everyone joined in only to do a couple of lines and then "La La La La...." as people had forgotten the words!

It didn't take too long before Mike was up and running and from there it was onwards and upwards! The gear looked good and the sound was spot on and Mike was very good and very clear on the microphone. I really tried not to get too involved and hassle him during the night because I don't think that there's anything worse than that. All I did was buy him a beer because it was very hot and I nipped over to see if all was ok when the laptop went down.

The band (Committed) were very good. Nice sound too and a good set of Motown stuff. I had said about 8 months ago that the Groom should arrange to sing with the band. He loves the song 'Try a little tenderness'. He thought it was a good idea at the time but never said anything more. I was walking around telling mutual friends last night that I had told him to do it and that we should all get together and try to get him to do it but it fell upon death ears. Mike mentioned today that shortly after I left, he DID get up and sing with the band and got it all on video.

The Groom said to me a few moments ago that the girl backing singers actually said to him that they expected the usual dodgy karaoke singer type performance but were very impressed with him. They also joked about sacking their current singer!

Overall a very good night. I knew for certain that Mike would have a really good, up for it crowd and I was right. As soon as the current chart stuff came on, the dancefloor really was packed. There must have been around 70 people dancing, hands in the air and really enjoying themselves.
